The Thrifty Six are Bronzed and Browned

Welcome to the September edition of The Thrifty Six! We are a group of international fashion lovers who meet once a month in our little space on the internet to share our thrifty outfits. On the third Monday of every month, we will all share an outfit based on a theme that features preloved wardrobe pieces. Shopping and reselling preloved clothing is so much better for the environment and you can find some of the best fashions in thrift or charity shops. The Thrifty Six are here not only to inspire you to shop second hand but to also get creative in your closets.

It was my turn to choose a thrifty theme for this month’s style challenge. With autumn arriving in the northern hemisphere in less than a week, I thought some fall colors were in order. And what better hues to represent the transition from summer tans and copper tones to falling leaves and falling temperatures than browns and bronzes.

For my thrifty interpretation of this Bronzed and Browned theme, I went back into that big box of beautiful things that Daenel sent to me earlier in the summer. This gorgeous silk Kantha Bae tunic was one of the glorious items inside that wonderful box of goodies, preloved by Daenel and newly loved by me! Featuring shades of browns, coppers, and bronzes, this hand-me-down tunic completely captures the essence of autumn as well as the spirit of my bohemian soul.

I really wanted to wear this tunic as a dress but it is a tad bit too short for a dress. Not wanting my heiney exposed, I added dark brown leggings for adequate coverage. I knew immediately that I would wear a pair of my thrifted cowgirl boots since all three preloved pairs are in shades of brown. These two tone boots were the obvious choice since they incorporate multiple shades of brown into this earthy outfit.

Next, I layered on an old thrifted LulaRoe lace duster vest in light tan. I mostly added the vest just to have another preloved piece in this outfit. I might like the outfit better without the vest though.

My hat and necklace were not preloved or thrifted. You have seen my rusty colored Panama hat lots of times because I wear it frequently. My giant tassel necklace was purchased from a boutique in Asheville, North Carolina, which I gifted to myself for Christmas last year.

My earrings were not thrifted but upcycled which is just as thrifty in my opinion. Years ago, I purchase two identical bracelets on clearance. They had magnetic clasps which broke before I ever wore the darn things. I suppose that’s why they were on super duper cheap clearance. Rather than tossing the whole broken mess into the trash, I removed the charms and added some earring hooks to create these really cute tassel charm earrings. I keep all of my broken jewelry in a container as it comes in handy for a variety of different creative projects. You can see how I utilized broken jewelry bits to create decorative jars and bottles for my mudroom makeover.

Now let’s check out how my thrifty friends have styled outfits that are bronzed and browned.

“I love retro brown and orange floral prints so this vintage dress is one of my favourite thrifted finds. I bought it on eBay a couple of years ago, and have added a belt that I bought in a charity shop. The dress has a button missing on one cuff which the previous owner replaced with a brooch. I think this is a charming touch and adds to its uniqueness!” -Emma

“September’s T6 theme is ‘Bronzed & Browned’ – perfect for this original 1970’s dress with all the tones of Autumn. Sadly it’s been devoured by moths leaving it covered in holes, some small, some not so small. It was heading for the trash with its previous owner so I stepped in to save it and restore its former glory!
It was super, super long so, out of necessity, I removed four inches from the hem. Once cut away, I used the fabric to pattern match and patch the holes. Placing it inside the dress, under the damaged areas, I was able to invisibly mend all the holes from the top. I was meticulous, even using different coloured thread to conceal my tiny stitches…
…so now I challenge everyone to spot any evidence of the tragic moth damage!”

“I found that all 3 of my crew has different shades of brown pants so we came up with ideas on how to style them. These rust brown joggers were thrifted just this year, but everything else has been preloved in my closet for a while. I almost think the proportions aren’t fabulous with this top and joggers, but you can’t win them all.”

There is a lovely story about this dress, which is one of the archives as I just got back from holiday and didn’t have time to shoot new photos. The photo doesn’t do justice to the glorious colours of this one. Gold, caramel, cognac, all bronzed and browned hues on a beautiful shiny fabric, not polyester! I was so, so very much in love with this dress. I felt like a princess in it! When I bought it the second time the magic was gone……”

“While my skin tone retains its usual pink and white instead of the rich tan from an August spent on Spanish beaches, I can still sport the Bronzed and Browned vibe in my outfit colors! This thrifted Target skirt with warm shades of orange and brown is perfect for late summer through late fall, and I styled it with a simple brown T-shirt, a thrifted ivory lace jacket, brown flats, and DIY jewelry in brown, rust, bronze, and mixed metals.” -Sally
And Me!
“I went back into the big box of beautiful that Daenel sent to me for this preloved bronze and copper colored Kantha Bae silk tunic. I added an old thrifted LuLaRoe (remember them?!) lace duster vest in tan and my thrifted two-tone brown and tan cowgirl boots. I made my tan tassel earrings from broken bracelets and earring hooks. Dark brown leggings, a rusty colored hat, and a funky rag necklace complete my very Bronzed and Browned outfit.” -Shelbee
