“The Thousand Quilt” by Elizabeth Shippen Green | Style Imitating Art
It is that time again when we present the artwork for the next SIA challenge. It was Terri’s turn to choose and she picked a wonderfully colorful pen and ink illustration that spoke to her on a few different levels.
About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of Meadow Tree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag Salazar, Terri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!
This Week’s Presenter
Terri chose this work because she “was drawn to the mother/daughter theme with its handing down of the fiber arts from generation to generation.” Elizabeth Shippen Green was an American illustrator born on September 1, 1871, to a well-connected Philadelphia family. She was an ambitious student at the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts where she studied under Thomas Eakins, Thomas Anschultz, and Robert Vonnoh. She was also a member of the Red Rose Girls which was a group of female artists in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the early 1900s whose success as professional artists made them role models for future generations of female creatives. Be sure to visit Terri’s post for additional details.
The Artwork
The Thousand Quilt by Elizabeth Shippen Green
There are so many beautiful colors and patterns to work with in this illustration. The quilt is so gorgeous with its thousand pieces of bright hues against black. I see inspiration in the mother’s lovely white gown and the daughter’s bold red dress. I am drawn to the green of the wallpaper, the floral on the glass lamp shade, and the red wallpaper pattern visible through the doorway. I don’t have any idea which direction I will go with this one, but I am excited to begin the brainstorming process!
If you want to be featured with your art inspired outfit in Terri’s review post on March 9, 2022, be sure to submit your photos to her at meadowtreestyle@gmail.com by 10:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, March 8, 2022.
Happy styling!

It was an illustration in a children’s book of the same name, I believe. I will research it and share more details in the next post!

Oh, the possibilities with this one! But, I need to start planning now because I almost never listen to my gut and keep on trying different things!

I found the most fabulous sweater in Asheville that I think may be perfect for this one! But I also have my favorite kimono ever that looks just like this quilt. I need to get going on this soon myself! I can’t wait to see what you come up with, Marsha!

Oh wow that’s going to be a lovely one to use as inspiration — it’s got so many gorgeous colours in it!
Let’s hope I can join in…we’re so up in the air at the moment because Michael’s mum is in hospital and we’re trying to get over there to see her, but we’ve had to postpone the trip once already and we’re not sure if we can go this week, or next! Fingers crossed all will be well.
Big hugs

Oh no, Suzy, I am sending lots of positive energy for Michael’s mum and keeping my fingers crossed that you can make it there to see here.
I just returned from my trip to North Carolina and brought home the most beautiful sweater that might be perfect for this art prompt. Now I need to get motivated for photos. I am so tired!

Oooh, that is such a wonderful way to interpret this illustration! I went with a granny square cardigan…it’s not handed down but it looks like it could be!
