The Sunday Afternoon Quarterback #5: Where Did All the Offense Go?
#12 Penn State Nittany Lions 35 – Purdue Boilermakers 7
Seriously, where did all the offense go? That was the question of the second half at Beaver Stadium for the Nittany Lions yesterday. Scoring on their first four drives and sprinting out to a 28-0 lead with ten minutes to go in the first half, the Lions and their powerful offense were held in check by a Boilermaker defense in the second half before scoring again with six minutes to go in the game. Sean Clifford’s second interception of the year was really the turning point for the offensive shutdown. It seems that this play was enough to give Purdue a fighting breath and keep our offense just enough out of sorts for the rest of the game.
The Boilermakers elected to receive the ball first but would go backwards on their first possession punting after three plays. Starting on their 44 yard line, Penn State needed only six plays to put the first points on the board. KJ Hamler finished the drive hauling in a 23 yard pass from Sean Clifford for the score. Penn State 7-0.
Hamler returned the ensuing punt 26 yards setting up Penn State at the Purdue 33 yard line. A personal foul penalty moved the ball to the 11 and two plays later Clifford would take it in himself from 3 yards out. Penn State 14-0.
Following another Purdue punt, Sean Clifford would need two plays before striking again. Jahan Dotson would beat his defender on a deep in route, aided by a Hamler block was off to the races, and 72 yards later was in the end zone. Penn State 21-0.
Penn State’s next drive began on their own 35 yard line. It would take all of seven plays to move 65 yards before the Nittany Lions would find pay dirt again. Finding a wide open Nick Bowers for a 48 yard pass gave the Lions the ball inside the Purdue 10 yard line. Pat Freiermuth found himself on the receiving end of Sean Clifford’s pass for the 7 yard touchdown. Penn State 28-0.
Purdue was forced to punt on their next possession and this is where the aforementioned interception turned the game around. A miscommunication between Hamler and Clifford led to an under thrown ball that was picked by Simeon Smiley. The Boilermakers turned the pick into their only score of the game. Jack Plummer hit David Bell for a 43 yard completion setting up Purdue in the red zone. On third down, Plummer would find Amad Anderson Jr. for the 15 yard score. Penn State 28-7.
Penn State was able to move the ball on their next series but Jake Pinegar would miss a 35 yard field goal, his first miss of the year. Purdue punted after the miss but the ball hit a Penn State player on the fair catch and was recovered by Purdue. Jayson Oweh notched one of Penn State’s ten sacks on the day on the last play of the first half. Penn State 28-7.
Penn State received the second half kickoff and punted after only three plays. This punt was followed by punts by both teams over the next nine possessions before the Nittany Lions would take over on their own 13 yard line. Noah Cain provided most of the muscle during this drive, running for 64 yards, including the final two, and scoring the last points of the game. Penn State 35-7.
Noah Cain finished the day 105 yards on 12 carries for his first 100 yard game in the Blue and White. Penn State is back in action next week during primetime when they travel to the unfriendly confines of Kinnick Stadium in Iowa.
Until then, WE ARE…

Looking very nice. Love the look, so very nice. Love how your kids joined in at the end. Good win for Penn St and talk about no offense. Let’s look at Cal. Sad.
Here is one for you to tell hubby. Kinnick Stadium at Iowa is named for the 1939 Heisman Trophy Winner Nile Kinnick who was killed in a training flight in Gulf of Paria in 1943. Ensign Kinnick’s body was never recovered.

Thank you, Mica! My kids always want to be in my photos! I have been sharing more of them lately. In the beginning of blogging, I was always hesitant to share pictures of my kids, but then I realized that people like to see that side of my life, too. I went to an art show this weekend which I should be sharing soon on the blog. A fashion show sounds like a fun weekend activity as well! I am all linked up at your new party. Thanks for hosting!

I am going to propose this series to my husband and see if he is willing to write a few words for the blog. He is a big sports fan. He follows “everything “.
I may have a Purdue degree but I am not a diehard Purdue football fan. I am Notre Dame and Alabama football all the way.

Sarah, it is so much fun doing these posts with my husband! It makes this little blog of mine a family affair. And it adds some different content that I wouldn’t normally have here. This is our second year doing this and he has gained his own little following of college football fans. If you go this route, do let me know. I would love to see what your husband does with it!
