The Sunday Afternoon Quarterback #19: A New Look for the Carolina Panthers in 2020
I wasn’t planning on writing another Sunday Afternoon Quarterback this season. Mostly because the college football season has come to an end and we aren’t big followers of the professional game. But since I shared my new found fandom of the Carolina Panthers two weeks ago and I had these pictures styling my Christian McCaffrey tee shirt just sitting unused in my photo arsenal, I figured one more post was in order for this season. No use letting a perfectly decent photo shoot go to waste.
Touchdown Wire has just shared an article, 10 NFL Teams with New Looks for 2020, and Carolina is at the top of that list with lots of late and post season changes kicking off a major team rebuild for the Panthers in the new decade.
With owner David Tepper firing coach Ron Rivera late in the season, there was lots of speculation about who his replacement would be. Baylor coach Matt Rhule was finally hired as Rivera’s replacement and he is still assembling his coaching staff which seems to heavily consist of coaches with more college football experience than professional football backgrounds.
Rhule has brought on LSU assistant Joe Brady as the Panthers new offensive coordinator and Baylor assistant Phil Snow will run the Panthers defense. As the professional game is starting to evolve to look more like college football, these staffing decisions may be a really good thing for Carolina. Who doesn’t appreciate the collegiate passion brought to any game over the sometimes tainted values of highly paid professional athletes? I know that is the one thing that keeps us solidly grounded as college football fans in my house…that good ole collegiate passion.
Linebacker Luke Kuechly announced his retirement with no warning whatsoever on January 14, 2020. A first round draft pick for Carolina in 2012, Kuechly was a stand out player for the Panthers for all 8 years of his professional career. In a statement following his announcement, the 28 year old Kuechly said, “I think now is the right chance for me to move on…In my heart I know it’s the right thing to do…There’s only one way to play this game since I was a little kid-play fast, play physical, and play strong. And at this point I don’t know if I am able to do that anymore.”
His sudden retirement shocked the Panthers community. David Tepper praised Kuechly’s contributions to the Panthers organization stating, “It’s obviously going to be very difficult for all of us because we know that no player can replace what he’s been for this organization for the last eight years. His presence can’t be replicated.” It remains to be seen how Carolina will replace one of the best off-ball linebackers in the NFL.
There is also a lot of uncertainty and speculation surrounding the future of quarterback Cam Newton due to a history of injuries that have left him on injured reserve to close out the 2019-2020 season. If Newton is cut or traded in conjunction with Kuechly’s retirement, the Panthers are starting basically from scratch to rebuild both their offense and their defense. But sometimes building up from nothing can have very successful results. I guess only the 2020-2021 season will tell.
If you are Super Bowl fans, I hope you enjoy the game on February 2. I doubt I will be watching it, mostly because Jeff will still be in Louisiana and I don’t really have any friends to invite over for a party. So The Sunday Afternoon Quarterback series will resume in September. Penn State will kick off their season against Kent State on September 5, 2020, at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pennsylvania. Perhaps Jeff and the boys will be in attendance in Happy Valley. I think I’m going to sit that one out.
Until next season, we are…

Looking very nice. Love the bright blue tights and the Panther socks. Looking very nice and I love how you matched things. Very nice.
Ron Rivera is a Cal guy. His secondary coach was Richard Rodgers who went to Cal and was involved in the craziest play in college football history (https://youtu.be/mfebpLfAt8g). It should be interesting in Carolina. Glad that Rivera and Rodgers are now with the Redskins. Rivera hired Jack Del Rio as his defensive coordinator which is cool because Del Rio is from my native Hayward.
Hope you have a good Sunday and sorry if I went a little football deep on you.

Thanks, Patrick! For the compliment and for going all football deep on me! I love that you have all of this information right at your fingertips to share. I am learning little by little about all this football stuff and I am grateful that you are willing to share your knowledge with me! Just like I teach you about women’s fashion. Tee hee. Have a great week, my friend!

I don’t often read your Sunday afternoon posts. Well, that’s not true: I often skim them for the elegance of your writing, but I don’t feel driven by the content. I am from the UK, you see!! But, OMG, how could I ignore this one with such an amazing outfit. It’s like you ARE the team. Once again, you have found some amazingly-coloured tights and once again (again…) they look fab on you. I clicked on the tights link and see that there are colours I didn’t even know existed. Now I want them all! Kx

Ha, thanks, Karen! I don’t really like the content of the Sunday Afternoon Quarterback posts myself, so I can’t blame you! But I am starting to become a little more knowledgeable on the topic. However, it is all just another excuse for me to create a cute outfit! I want all the colors of the tights, too. I am slowly adding more and more colors to my expansive collection.

Thanks so much, Lacey! I just like to be creative and have as much fun as possible with my outfits. It is my creative outlet along with writing. So the link parties are where you can add links to your own blog posts on my page. It gives you exposure with my readers. Readers will scroll through the thumbnail images and click the links if something interests them. So it basically drives traffic from my site to yours if you add links. I host two parties a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays that have no theme so you can add whatever posts you want. And once a month I host a style link up that is open for fashion posts. Just click the button at the bottom of the party that says “add link” and follow the prompts. It’s super easy! Let me know if you have any other questions!

I’ve been a big Luke Kuechly fan since his college days. I’m glad to see him walking away before any more cuncussions. #anythinggoes

Jeremy, thanks so much for stopping by! Yeah, sometimes a person really has to just take care of their health…and why not walk away while you’re still at the top of your game? Too many stick around for too long until there is irreparable damage.

Claire, thanks so much! These tights were so bright that I was a little afraid that I would get some stares in public. But then I figured what the heck and just went for it. Life is short, wear the crazy tights!
