The Magnificent 8 in Simply Red
The Magnificent 8 is a collaboration among 8 stylish women, each in a different age bracket, ranging from 20’s to 80’s. The mission of this collaboration is to show you just how ageless style is, how we can each dress however we’d like and in ways that make us feel fabulous. There are no age restrictions on style. So wear what you want, when you want, add a smile, and strut your style with confidence.
Every quarter, we choose a theme and each create an outfit that suits our own personal tastes and fashion choices and we post them on the last Wednesday of every third month. So be sure to go check out everyone’s posts for lots of style inspiration at any age! And join us again on January 31, 2024, for our next collaboration.
Apparently red is the color of the fall 2023 season with shades of this brilliant and powerful hue splashed all over the runways. To show how ageless both fashion and colors are, this wonderfully stylish group of women has decided to share our takes on the fall fashion trend of Simply Red.
Let me introduce the ladies of The Magnificent 8 so you can see how they have styled their Simply Red outfits. You can click on each individual link to see how my beautiful friends have interpreted this theme.

Because red is such a dramatic color, some may be intimidated by wearing this hue from head to toe. But not much intimidates me when it comes to style so I went far beyond “simply” red and created a complex concoction of crimson colors for my cowgirl inspired outfit.
Red is one of my very favorite colors to wear. I only realized how much I adore shades of scarlet, burgundy, garnet, and vermillion when I started this blogging journey 8 years ago. I don’t think I owned much red back then, favoring dark muted color palettes instead. A decade ago, I thought I was supposed to be invisible. But now, visibility is my game and bright, jubilant colors have made their way to prominence in my wardrobe, overtaking all the black and dark muted colors.
When we settled on Simply Red, I really had no idea what I was going to wear. Well, except for red. I knew I was going to wear red. I had recently photographed another one of my Frankenstein dresses that is red, white, blue, and gray, with an emphasis on the red and blue, and was tempted to share that outfit here for the sake of saving time. But I was not satisfied with the abundance of non-red colors in that outfit so I will save it to share later. For this post, I had decided that I wanted the sartorial emphasis to be all about the red.
I recently wore the red outfit below for our August Thrifty 6 collaboration, Hot to Trot, which features the same hat and same turquoise necklace as this outfit but with a focus on preloved items. I absolutely loved the head to toe red in my thrifty outfit, so using that combination as my inspiration, I went to my closet to see what other red pieces I own to create a similar, but different, look that made me feel comfortable and visible.
Instead of my preloved red satin slip skirt, I reached for my red tulle skirt (also styled here and here) as my starting point. My red cowgirl boots were an obvious choice of footwear for various reasons. First, they’re red. Ha. Second, they are much loved and often worn boots. Third, ever since I saw my friend’s daughter wearing a tulle skirt with cowgirl boots, I have been wanting to try this combination.
Once I settled on this red checked button down shirt, I couldn’t figure out exactly how to wear it. At first I thought it would be cute tied at the waist or tucked into the skirt. But alas, the skirt is too big, like most of my clothes are these days, therefore I needed a way to stylishly belt the thing to keep it from falling off. So I hiked the skirt up to my boobs, let the shirt hang loose and added a black western style belt to keep with my cowgirl vibes. I completed the outfit with my red Panama hat and some turquoise and red jewelry. I am really digging turquoise with red these days. It’s a color combination that I once despised but now it really speaks to me.
And there you have it…my not so Simply Red outfit, showing how you can style any trend at any age with the things you already have in your closet!
Keeping it on the edge,
Shelbee

Funny isn’t it, that colour combinations can speak to you from one day to another. But I’m loving all the red on you. And tulle skirts and cowboy boots! Oh yeah!

Hehehe, thanks so much, Nancy! Tulle and cowboy boots might be my new thing! I was contemplating ridding my closet of my fancy tulle skirts. Mostly because they are all too big on me. But maybe I need to put my sewing skills to work and alter them instead!

I really, really love this outfit, Shelbee! The red against your skin and hair is just so perfect! The tulle skirt with the cowboy boots is such a cool dichotomy! And, your felt hat is fabulous (I really need another adjective)!
I was never a fan of red until I realized it doesn’t have to be tomato red! And, I’ve always loved burgundies and garnet so I guess I’ve always been a fan of some shades of red.

LOve the cowboy boots! Red is a great color on you with your complexion! I love wearing red too, it feels like such a powerful statement! The hat is perfect too. I did get your email and hope I responded! Some times the menobrain and the meds have me thinking I did one thing, when I may not have.
Hope you are doing well Shelbee!

Shelbee,
Well, now, simply red! Simply marvelous! You hit the nail on the head with the color red, variations of red, the tulle skirt, and the red cowgirl boots – all trending this fall. I, too, remember the days when wearing subdued colors was necessary for the legal (you) and pharmaceutical (me) professions. Thank God that’s over, and we are now visible.

Eugenia, thanks so much, my friend! Even back in my legal days, I definitely pushed the boundaries with my work attire! One of my favorite suits was a glorious red raw silk pants suit. It had cropped pencil pants and a shorter, fitted blazer. It was so pretty and I loved it so much. I also had it in black. I remember wearing both suits with sassy heeled sandals and getting chastised for baring my toes! LOL Yes, thank God that is over! Be visible, be fabulous!

That is such a fun skirt! I really like how you belted it with the shirt over the top – you never would have known it was purley for practical purposes, as it looks really stylish! You really nailed the red theme 🙂
