The term fancy pants has a rather negative connotation with every definition I have found using the word pretentious as the primary translation of this mid-19th century American idiom. But my magnificent friends and I are all far from pretentious in our versions of this month’s Fancy Pants theme.

In fact, pretentious is the probably the opposite of what I am…even in my fancy pants. I think my entire outfit cost less than $50 and that includes my shoes which were probably around $30 (I can’t recall because they are a few years old now).

I found these tie dye pants on a thrifting adventure last fall. I think they were $6. Because they are a lightweight fabric, I washed them after purchasing and put them away for the winter. When we decided on this month’s theme of statement pants, I figured this was the perfect opportunity to finally style these cuties. Although I did consider these pants as they are my very favorite trousers that make a bold statement.

With tie dye raging in the fashion world right now, I also wanted to try a little double tie dye action just to see if I could pull it off. I recently purchased this burgundy tie dye kimono from Torrid using rewards cash. Once shipping and tax were added, this kimono ended up costing me $7. I really liked the way the two different tie dyes complemented each other.

And because it is still rather chilly here, I added a long sleeve cropped tee shirt that I found recently on the Target clearance rack for $4. My necklace was c/o Happiness Boutique from a few years ago and my earrings are one of the fabulous pairs recently gifted to me from Sharon of Big Earrings.

I can envision myself wearing this outfit to a music festival this summer. And guess what? I might actually be going to one! Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival is happening from June 17-19 this year and my two favorite Bluegrass bands are playing, Fireside Collective and The Jakobs Ferry Stragglers. Also, my dear friend Becca from North Carolina will be there. I am super excited to see her! My very last trip just before our world changed forever was to visit Becca last February for a Galentine’s weekend. I am going to hug her so hard when I see her!

In fact, I might be so excited to reunite with all of the wonderful folks from the Bluegraass community that I may not even put much thought into my festival attire. Ha. You all know that’s a joke! I live for special events that give me a reason to put tons of thought into my attire! I usually end up never taking outfit photos though because I am too busy living in the moment when I am festivaling.

I likely will wear a lightweight flowing kimono of some sort because they are so fun and practical for an outdoor festival atmosphere. They provide an extra layer during the cooler hours of early morning and later evening. They provide skin protection in the midday sun. And they are super easy to turn into a scarf when you no longer want or need the coverage.

Or I can just shed the kimono completely and really showcase my fancy pants.

Have you jumped on the tie dye train yet? Would you pair multiple tie dye prints together? I wonder if I could combine three or four different ones into one outfit without looking like a hippie explosion. But maybe I would enjoy looking like a hippie explosion!

I haven’t yet, but….I have my eye on a tie dye dress. Those trousers are so amazing! I love the print and I can see so many ways to wear it! Perfect for a kimono look indeed!

This outfit is so fun! Puts a smile on my face! I have a tie dye kimono from years ago. Inspired to wear it. Love outdoor music. And I’m old enough that I’ve seen the Dead several times. Have a great day! Thanks for posting! 😎

Tricia, thank you so much! You should definitely bring that tie dye kimono out for a spin! And I have to say that I don’t get jealous of many things ever in life, but I certainly get little pangs of envy over Grateful Dead stuff! I, too, am old to have seen the Dead, but I never did so I really enjoying the stories from other’s Dead experiences! So cool! Thanks for sharing that with me and have a wonderful day!

They are such fun statement pants and the burgundy kimono looks so good with them! I have a couple viscose kimonos like this in a similar poncho style, I’ll need to try turning them into scarves, I haven’t done that yet!

Thanks for suggesting such a fun theme this month, was nice to think up outfits that met it!

Hope that you are having a nice week 🙂

Mica, thanks so much! I love the lightweight kimonos for this reason… they are super easy to turn into a scarf! This was such a fun theme and everyone did such a great job styling their fancy pants! I hope the rest of your week is fabulous!

You do tie dye so freaking well, Shelbee! I love that you combined two different tie dye items and they look FAB together!
How cool is it that you’re gonna get to go to a Bluegrass festival again!?! I’d probably spend ages working out what I was going to wear too lol!

Suzy, thank you so much, my friend! I am really digging the double tie dye thing and am going to have try it more! I do hope I can make it to this festival. Jeff and I are considering making it a family affair. I think the kids would have a blast at a music festival!

I’ve borrowed my daughter’s tie dye tshirt last summer and loved the look, should purchase one for myself!
But I wouldn’t have thought to pair two tie dye pieces together, you surely proved me wrong as these two tie dye pieces go so well together! And I think these “fancy pants” would be perfect for an open air concert as they are thin enough for summer but still keep you protected from mosquitos! Not that they wouldn’t find a way to bite anyway, but at least pants make it harder for them!!
Happy to year you are able to attend one this year and especially meeting up with a friend. I too have a hard time taking blog photos when out doing fun stuff. I try sometimes but it always feels like I’m neglecting the fun stuff.

Ellie, thanks so much! You definitely need a tie dye piece or two in your wardrobe! I wasn’t sure if I could pull of the double tie dye look but you have to try to see and I am so glad that I did! This is one of my favorite festival outfits that I have ever created! Oh, and the mosquitoes, they will bite me regardless of what I am wearing. They always find a way. I think they like my blood better than anyone else’s on the planet! Haha. I hope you are having a wonderful week!

Thank you, Michelle! This is the kind of outfit that I definitely feel most like myself when I wear it. I like the old hippie look in my long flowing tie dye garments. I am so excited that you are getting to go to a festival this summer, too! I am really looking forward to it!

Thanks, Mireille! I agree that sometimes wild printed pants come in unflattering styles. I struggle a bit with this palazzo style pant myself. It is hard to get the proportions right. Oooh, I hope the thrifting gods are smiling upon you and you find the most fabulous pair of printed fancy pants!

Fabulous fancy pants, Ms. Michelle! I knew you’d have something fun to share! I am not a fan of tie-dye – it’s just not me. My dear Winesday Women want to do a dye-party, though, so at some point I will probably give it a go!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thank you, my friend! I actually was getting a little annoyed by ALLLLL of the tie dye that is out there. I don’t like when my favorite things get super duper trendy! I look forward to seeing what you create at your tie dye party!

I absolutely love this pattern mixing Shelbee!! I think the tie-dye looks great with your pants. It’s such a comfy yet cute outfit – this is the kind of airy look I like to wear in the summer to keep cool!

The festival sounds like a lot of fun, Shelbee!! I hope you and Becca have the best time! I wanted to say (if you didn’t already know) that I featured your post last Wednesday at Share Your Style #302 and I am just getting back around… I do love tie dye and have a couple of shirts.

Hope all is well with you and that spring is blooming madly,
    Hugs,
    Barb 🙂

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Barbara, thanks so much! I did see the feature last week and I really appreciate that! I am so excited to reconnect with my friends after not seeing any of them in a year and a half! And I am excited to introduce the kids to the Bluegrass festival scene. It is such a lovely community of wonderful, caring, loving, and kind humans! They are definitely my people! Spring is finally appearing in northern New York so I am very happy (and sneezy with all the allergens. Haha)!
