The Good Life & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up #99
I have read a lot of articles in the past 5 years or so that have addressed the issue of how difficult it becomes to make new friends the older we get. I have watched my 5 year old meet a new kid on the playground and when they discover one tiny thing they have in common, they instantly become best friends. And I have made comments like “Wouldn’t that be nice if it were that easy for adults?” Well, you know what I am discovering lately? It actually is that easy. For real. I have made a lot of new friends recently, right here in the middle of my 40’s, with the same ease that my 5 year old makes new friends. This makes me wonder if the difficulty in making new friends has nothing at all to do with age, but rather has much more to do with the energy you bring out into the world and the level of openness with which you approach new people. If you are willing to receive new friendships and new connections, there are a million lovely people out there with positive light and beautiful energy just willing to share it with you.
And among those million lovely people is one amazing woman who brings a light into the world that is brighter than most. Her name is Leti Callahan and she is the owner of Good Life Healing Arts & Gift Shop which just opened its doors on Saturday in the Franklin Building located in the Watertown, New York, Public Square. Leti is a military wife who just relocated to this area in the summer and she has wasted no time immersing herself in our little downtown community and we are so fortunate to have her. Her soft-spoken nature is welcoming and her sense of humor is contagious. After just a few minutes in conversation with her, you really just want to be her friend.
Leti is a licensed massage therapist, but in her Healing Arts Shop she specializes in Crystal Healing, Shell Healing, Sound Healing, and Reiki. She is also a very talented artisan creating some of the most beautiful feather and leather jewelry I have ever seen. And I have seen a lot of jewelry in my days! When you enter her shop, you are met with the most calming of aromas, tranquilizing music, and a spirit in the air that makes your soul feel at home. I had only met Leti briefly once before at the consignment shop where we chatted for a few moments before I had to go. When I went to her opening day on Saturday, it was as if I had known her all my life. I didn’t take any pictures on Saturday as I was too busy talking and learning more about this most fascinating woman. But I was more than happy to venture downtown again on Monday to get some photos so I could share with you all this healing shop that literally can make you feel better just by walking through the door.
In addition to her healing arts and hand crafted jewelry, Leti also has on display a most intriguing Spiritual Portrait by Barbara Besser, a visionary artist and life coach located in New Mexico. If you are local to the Watertown, New York area, stop by and meet Leti and she will give you more details about her personal spiritual portrait. It is quite captivating. You can even commission to have your own portrait done.
I have not yet purchased any of Leti’s services, but I am planning to in the very near future! And my friend Denise just gifted me the most stunning pair of leather leaf earrings in olive green crafted by Leti. So I assure you that my new earrings will be making an appearance on the blog soon. And I will definitely let you know more about Leti’s Healing Arts services. I am so very excited to try some alternative methods of healing. Be sure to follow her on Facebook at Good Life Gift Shop and Instagram.
Remember, always remain open to new experiences and new friendships. Otherwise you may never know all the wonderful inspiring people who live right in our very own community.
And keep spreading kindness, my friends, A little bit goes a long way!

Shelbee – I love what you are wearing in this post. And you are right about it being the energy we bring into the world!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thank you so much, Cathy! I was all super casual that day and not expecting to have my picture taken! But I’m glad you like it. Our energy speaks volumes, doesn’t it? And apparently the artist, Barbara Basser, who creates the spiritual portraits, does these just from a photograph. She can read your energy from a picture! I find that so fascinating. I hope you have a wonderful week, my friend!

What an absolutely cool little shop! And I agree with you, I think it has more to do with our openness than it does our age. I tend to be very guarded when it comes to letting new people into my life, but it is so easy to strike up conversations with strangers so if I chose to be more open to it I have no doubt I’d make new friends.

Debbie, thank you for stopping by and for sharing that little tidbit about yourself. I am usually very open, but even I have days when I am closed off. I think it even depends on the situation and the mood you are in on any given day just as much as it depends on your personality, too. The nature of human beings just fascinates me! I hope you are having a fantastic week, my friend!

Making new friends is so fulfilling. I hope someone gives you a GC for a massage for Christmas, or maybe a spiritual portrait!

Well now that is a great idea, Laurie! A gift card for me for some healing arts services would be so fantastic! Thanks so much for stopping by today. I hope you have a wonderful week ahead of you.

I have found making friends hasn’t been too hard as an adult. I think you don’t have issues because you’re a nice person, Shelbee.
Just look at how you support the small businesses in your area…that’s the best.

ps…And thanks for finding a way to reply to an individual comment too…I always like to hear your responses.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Jodie, thank you so much! And I think you don’t find difficulty in making friends as an adult either because you are the kindest person I have ever known and always open to kindness in return! I am so glad that I figured out how to get the responses to you individually as well instead of getting every single comment in your inbox. That’s annoying! And I never check the box in comments to get replies so sometimes I miss the responses. Silly blogging technicalities!

if only we could maintain the trust factor we had when we were five, making friends would be so much easier. Great showcase this week.

Thanks so much, Linda! I don’t know if it is a good thing or a bad thing, but I do maintain the trust factor of a 5 year old! Hahahaha. Sometimes it burns me, but usually it serves me well!

OOO, those earrings! This looks like such a lovely place Shelbee. I could use a deep tissue massage. I go for treatment and have heard of reiki as well, sounds interesting. I think making friends at an older age, depends on your environment, back at the workplace, where you go for fun etc.. I have made friends blogging that I enjoy as well, but I know what you mean about little kids!
Have a wonderful week!

Jess, thanks so much for reading and sharing your perspective! And these earrings are even more gorgeous in person. I cannot wait to style mine and share them on the blog! I also can’t wait to get some healing treatments from Leti so I can share that experience with you all as well.
The thing about friends, too, is that there are so many different “categories” of them. And the relationships all have a different purpose, right? I guess it is just another one of those oddities of social beings. I hope you are having a wonderful week!

Carrie @ Curly Crafty Mom
I’d want to do a little shopping after my treatment! I feel like as we get older we don’t have a lot of extra time either, so we’re pickier about who we want to form new friendships with and that can weed out a lot of people, too!!
Carrie
curlycraftymom.com
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Carrie, thanks for sharing your thoughts! I have to agree about the time factor. Not many of us have much time for all the little extras that friendships may require. But when we meet someone we connect with, we usually connect on that understanding as well. Don’t put too many demands on me and I won’t put them on you…a mutual respect and understanding is super important! I hope you are having a wonderful week!

A big congratulations and welcome to Leti! That’s really awesome what she is doing and sounds like her energy is contagious! I totally agree too with your statement regarding the energy we put out there. At the end of the day I think everyone is willing to be a friend. It’s just a matter of simply smiling and reaching out. I can’t wait to see your new beautiful earrings and how you style them. I hope your week is off to a great start and happy Tuesday Shelbee!
Maureen | http://www.littlemisscasual.com
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Maureen, thanks so much for your lovely comment! Leti’s energy is definitely contagious, so you can imagine how quickly I connected with her! A simple smile goes a really long way, too, doesn’t it? And we certainly don’t need to be close friends with every person we meet, no one has time for that many close friends anyway! But having friends near and far is quite a blessing, for sure. I hope you are having a wonderful week as well, my friend!

Tianna Sicilia
Such a cool gift shop and healing services. I think a lot of older people struggle to make friends because we’re so self-conscious in a way. Kids aren’t at all. They just go out into the world and experience it with carefree vigor. As adults, we are too aware of and afraid of judgment. I think you’re right, though; we can easily meet new people with open hearts and positive vibes xx
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Tianna, thanks so much for sharing your perspective on the topic. I never even thought about the fear of judgments part, but I think you are so right. And while I try very hard to keep my judgments in check, I definitely fear judgments of others sometimes and then I have to get that in check, too. I am who I am, take it or leave it! But being positive and open definitely makes adulthood a lot easier!

I am SO in agreement with not finding it easy to make friends at my age that I wrote a 3-part series on it a while back, Shelbee, three whole parts. And today, months later, I still do not have many friends. Clearly it’s not them, it’s me 🙂 I suspect it may have something to do with the fact that I generally do not like people very much (there’s a hint). Being somewhat of a hermit does rather prohibit socialising, doesn’t it hahahahaha MUACK!!! At least you and I are friends xoxo
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Sheela, I do remember your 3 part series about making friends! I read every one of those posts. And you were going outside of your comfort zone to make new connections…and look what happened? You found the love of your life! So while you may be somewhat of a hermit and have a general dislike for people, you still have the capacity to be open to love and light. And that’s really the most important thing anyway, isn’t it? And I am so very glad that you and I are friends! Because you rock. Love you!

Laura
I think we become more closed off and our expectations are too high of other people as we get older so it makes it hard to make and maintain friendships! It’s something I am working on for sure!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Laura, thanks for sharing your experience! I definitely agree that our expectations become higher as we get older, although I try to have very little expectations of anyone…expectations too often lead to disappoint! What’s the old saying? If you expect nothing, you will never be disappointed?! I hope you are having a wonderful week!
