The Fab 40’s are Inspired by Space
It’s no secret that I am a space geek. I am completely fascinated and intrigued by space travel, by the enormity of what’s out there, by our abilities to explore space, and by the idea that one day humans may very well have the capacity to populate other celestial bodies.
I am that kid (yes, when it comes to outer space, my enthusiasm is very childlike) who jumps on the couch, cheering out loud when a space shuttle launches, holding my breath for the entire time it takes them to get lift off and safely exit the atmosphere.
I follow up on NASA news to make sure the astronauts who live in the International Space Station are safe and well. I star gaze and planet watch when I get the chance and I find myself daydreaming about what life might look like somewhere else out in the enormous expanse of the universe.
Speaking of NASA news, new information on black holes and how they consume galaxies was just released this week and it is indeed fascinating information.
Another space related topic that interests me greatly is the ongoing debate between nationalism and globalism. You may be wondering what political ideologies have to do with space travel. Let me explain…
I keep finding myself in this same debate with my sister. She is very much a nationalist and I am very much a globalist. And when she discounts every reason I state in defense of my globalist views, I start reaching into space to drive my point home…there is a very great possibility that one day in the future humans will be inhabiting other planets. If and when that happens, planet Earth simply cannot be divided among its own inhabitants but will have to unite on a global platform in our dealings with other global societies within the solar system.
Usually when I pull out that final argument, she chuckles and tells me I smoke too much pot and the conversation comes to an end. The take away from that little tidbit: Don’t argue with a pothead over things that seem insane…they make total sense inside my brain!
Being a pothead space geek, when it came around to my turn to choose a theme for this month’s Fab 40’s collaboration, I had space on the brain and so the theme I chose was simply “Inspired by Space.” I left it rather generic so outfit interpretations could span as far as space does.
When I chose the theme, I wasn’t even sure what I would wear for the style prompt. I was thinking galaxy prints, moon, stars, and suns, metallics and moon boots, shiny jumpsuits, or outfits inspired by planets or constellations. Then space movies, books, and television shows crept into the mix like Star Wars, Star Trek, and even Space Balls.
For my outfit, I decided I wanted to dress like a badass female Jedi. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be a Jedi in a futuristic world where life in space really does exist? Much of my own ideology is closely aligned with that of the Jedi. They are “the guardians of peace and order in the Star Wars galaxy.” They are the defenders and protectors of all sapient life. And they never attack. Yes, in a futuristic world, I would want to be a Jedi.
But I wanted to create an an actual outfit that I could easily wear here in the present day on planet Earth without looking like a costume. A few weeks ago, I was wearing this burgundy poncho on a video chat with a friend who happens to be a huge Star Wars fan. (I am only a little bit of a Star Wars fan.) Apparently, this maroon colored wrap reminded him of a Jedi and he challenged me to create a sassy Jedi outfit.
My one concern for a Jedi was the 4 inch heels on my boots. Then I remembered that I am a Jedi and heels are no issue for a Jedi. But enough about me and my Jedi fantasies. Let’s take a look at the other women of the Fab 40’s and their space inspired looks.
The Fab 40’s is a group of five fashion bloggers from around the globe. Each month we choose a different theme with the goal of taking on style trends and showing how we each interpret and incorporate them into our own lives. With five widely varied views, you are certain to find something that speaks to you each month and encourages you to continue to have fun with fashion after the age of 40.
I invited Sherry and Brandi of Just Live Joy to join us this month for our space inspired theme. I am so excited that they agreed to be part of this collaboration and you get two outfit ideas instead of one!
Sherry of Just Live Joy
Sherry is looking adorable in her Moon & Star Outfit featuring a whimsical star print sweatshirt with her star and leopard print sneakers (I wonder if leopards will inhabit space one day!) And how divine is her golden star and moon bracelet?
Outfit Details: Sweatshirt- Grayson Threads (Target) / Jeans: Bp Jeans / Cadey Lace Up Sneakers-Universal Thread (Target) / Moon Bracelet-J.Crew Factory
Brandi of Just Live Joy
Brandi looks amazing in her Night Sky outfit with this gorgeous teal turtleneck sweater, black faux leather leggings (which really do shine like the night sky), and star sneakers.
Outfit Details: Sweater-Walmart / Leggings-Spanx / Star Sneakers-Steve Madden
Ada of Elegance and Mommyhood
Ada very creatively took to the streets of downtown Detroit for her outfit inspiration when she couldn’t find her sparkly silver pencil skirt that gave her space vibes. Wearing a simple cozy street style winter outfit with a sun colored sweater and edgy boots perfect for a walk in space, Ada took this challenge to a whole new stellar level!
Outfit Details: Lemon Sweater and Rust Beanie-Target / Distressed Skinny Jeans- Abercrombie / Black Buckle Combat Boots-Steve Madden
Daenel of Living Outside the Stacks
Daenel is paying tribute to her father, a lifelong Trekkie, in the most sublime way with her ethereal outfit featuring a speckled black sweater that resembles a star lit sky, her gorgeous star earrings, and of course the badass boots that offer a nod to Lt. Nyota Uhura from Star Trek. I simply cannot love this outfit inspiration any more!
Suzy of Suzy Turner Books & Style
Suzy looks out of this world in this astral inspired look with black and silver sequins. She is like an Elysian goddess all sparkly and shiny in this supernal style.
Outfit Details: Sparkly Dress-eBay / Sparkly Handbag-Gift from a friend / Grey Jeans-Levi’s / Black Boots-Very Old / Necklace-Gift from a friend (Vera Wang?)
Sheela of Sheela Writes
Unfortunately, Sheela is unable to join us this month.
And me in my Jedi glory
Outfit Details: Poncho-Sam’s Club / Dress-c/o Fashom / Tights-c/o Sheertex / Boots-JustFab / Belt Bag-Torrid / Gloves-Army-issued / Fingerless gloves and Earrings-Old / Hat-Thrifted / Moon Necklace-c/o Happiness Boutique
Are you a space geek like me? Or a Trekkie like Daenel’s father? Or perhaps you are more into Star Wars like my friend. Or Space Balls like my husband. Do you enjoy celestial prints? How would you style an outfit inspired by space?
Keeping it out of this world,

That is a difficult topic! To talk about and to put it in a outfit! But you were all very creative! And what perfect scenery you choose!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks, Nancy! I had fun with this theme and I thought this little quarry area by my house sort of resembled another planet! Thanks for noticing it. Have a fabulous week, my friend.

I’m interested in space too but not as much as you. I find it so interesting about the planets and different galaxies. Did you ever watch Strange Days At Blake Holsey High?

It is so fascinating at any level of interest, I think! I have never seen Strange Days, but I will definitely look into it. Thanks for the suggestion, Jennifer! Have a fabulous week.

Your outfit may be space inspired but it’s totally wearable here on earth! Burgundy looks so good on you! Great surroundings too, perfect for the theme!

Thanks so much, Ellie! This was a fun theme and I loved this outfit and the colors of it as well! I thought this little quarry area looked like it could be on another planet so it was the perfect spot for photos. By the way, I added the link party to this post because I didn’t get the chance to write a new one for today. So if you want to stop back to link up, please do!

Shelbee,
What an interesting and fun theme to express, and yes, you are certainly a Jedi.
My only worry with your boots was the fact there were so many sharp stones around you. Glad you are able to navigate the stars and fields with such grace.

Donna, thanks so much! This was super fun to create a Jedi inspired outfit! No worries about my crazy heels…I always have my amazing husband there to hold my hand as I wobble across rocky terrain or climb up tall things wearing even taller boots! We generally get a pretty good laugh from it all! And graceful, I am not. I just have a great photographer who makes me look that way! I hope you have a fabulous day.

Cute outfits! I’m not much of a space geek, although I do know what a Jedi is ;). I love how you can pull cute outfits together out of unrelated items and make them look awesome!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Anita! This was a fun style prompt to create a wearable Jedi outfit that didn’t look like a costume! I hope your week is off to a great start!

Lovely outfit, Shelbee! I’ve always loved space. Astronaut was one of my career choices when I was in high school. LOL! (Yeah life has a way of getting in the way of those big aspirations.) And I’ve always used it as a safe haven for my mind when feeling overwhelmed. From the perspective of the universe, it makes Earthly problems seem insignificant. The universe is still going to be here long after our sun goes through its red giant stage and the Earth is swallowed. For some reason that gives me comfort.
I’m with you on globalism. Inclusiveness is the key to creating a peaceful existence. I’ve never understood why some people should have a safe, long life while others suffer in poorly developed countries simply because of an accident of birth. It certainly isn’t a matter of one person being more deserving than another. I did nothing extraordinary to get born in the USA. So it saddens me when people want to hoard their good luck. The whole, “I got mine and fuck everyone else,” is what is so very wrong with America today.
Keep on takin’ my friend.

Michelle, thanks so much! That is such a cool perspective…the vastness of outer space and the universe really does make earthly problems seem so small. And if we don’t start changing the way we treat our planet, together on a global level, we are going to extinguish ourselves long before the sun swallows the earth! I really am starting to view our entire species as a toxic parasitic thing on this planet. I do have to take what steps I can to minimize my contribution to the damage. Being kind and environmentally concerned definitely help me sleep better at night!

Looking so very nice and I am a little bit of a space geek also. I love old NASA stuff. The TV show “When We Left the Earth-the NASA Missions” is one of my favorites. Love it. When I worked at a State Special School, I got to do a project with Mae C. Jemison who was the first African-American woman in space. It was a super cool experience.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Patrick! I need to go check out that show now, it sounds fascinating! And what a cool experience for you to work with Mae C. Jemison! Definitely one for your own personal history book!

This is such a perfect representation of a modern Jedi! And a real life outfit! I do find space related movies really interesting especially the ones that could be possible like the Martian and I really loved the movie Hidden Figures even though the focus is not really space itself but the women behind some of the amazing math feats!

Mireille, thanks so much! I am so glad that my outfit didn’t come out looking too much like a costume but more like a real life outfit. And it was super comfortable! I want to watch Hidden Figures. That movie looks totally fascinating! I hope your week is off to a great start!

I love the Jedi look and the inspired by space theme. I’ve got a middle schooler who is very into science. I’ll have to let her know it’s 100 percent possible to be fascinated by all things science and fashionable too.
Shelbee, thanks for hosting another fantastic link-up!

Thanks so much, Jed! Of course it is possible for anyone to be intellectual and scientific and even geeky if you will and still have fabulous style! Let your daughter that smart is new the cool!

I have to say that this look is out of this world! (Bad joke. ) Love your take on space with this Jedi look. Are you watching the Mandalorian? It’s so good! Loving your boots by the way. Thanks for the link up Shelbee!

Thanks so much, Kathrine! It’s not a bad joke at all! I have used the same phrase to others in this group for this theme! Haha I watched a few episodes of The Mandalorian and I just couldn’t get into it for some reason. Maybe I will try it again!

Daenel
This was such a fun and memory-jogging theme. Thank you for providing me with the outlet to share a couple of fun stories about my dad. He was a character.
Your boots are fab, but 4 inches? I sprained my ankle just reading about them. LOL They’re fabulous though.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Daenel, I absolutely loved reading your post and the stories about your father. My father was also a magnificent character and he is remembered in large circles as such! He was not a space geek, but a bookie. I have some crazy stories about growing up with the guy who ran an illegal gambling operation from our home and subsequently from his hospital bed straight up until the day he died! It is fun to revisit those memories sometimes. And I just laughed out loud that you sprained your ankle looking at my boots! So funny. I can go to about 4 1/4 inches and still walk. Any higher than that and my foot doesn’t curve that way!

Suzy
I LOVE everything about your theme Shelbee! And how it all came to be is just the icing on the stellar cake. I bet your Trekkie friend is impressed too. I also love that you a globalist rather than a nationalist. ME TOO!!! We really are more alike than we thought lol.
Huge hugs, my friend
Suzy xx
and PS. Yes, we must do a joint post wearing our Nasa tees!!!!!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Suzy, thanks so much, my friend! I knew you would get out a kick out of my space theme just because it is quirky enough and we definitely have a bond over mutually shared quirkiness, don’t we! My NASA tee shirt is put away for a Christmas gift from my boys, but after Christmas, lets definitely get together and do a joint post! That will be so much fun! I am loving the next theme, too!

Suzy
That sounds like a great plan, Shelbee! I’m actually off in a couple of weeks and won’t be back until after Christmas so that will work out well for me too. I’m probably going to do my tweed outfit before I go, just to be on the safe side!
I love our shared quirkiness by the way!
Huge hugs

That sounds perfect, Suzy! I will likely have my tweed outfit photographed sooner rather than later as well! Enjoy your time off!

Suzy
Thanks Shelbee! But I’ll probably try and get some writing done as I’ll be isolating at the in-laws in England for five FULL days before we can get a covid test LOL. If it’s negative, then we can at least leave the house and have a mooch around town. So for those five days, I might be hiding behind my laptop with several glasses of wine LOL!!! 😉
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
That sounds pretty much like my every day at home these past 8 months or so! I never leave the house, it is like I have been on an 8 month quarantine. Haha. I don’t trust the tests or the politicians or the doctors or the scientists or the media…so really, I guess, I don’t trust people in general. So I’ll be here in my house playing dress up for an indefinite period of time!

Hi, Shelbee – I love your imagination here and all the ideas…because I too love outer space! (I have an outer space Pinterest board even though it doesn’t go with anything I’m doing. Lol) And you got me laughing about your conversations with your sister. Hahaha! Then I went to your Nasa article link and ended up reading all about how black holes blow up as well as suck in…mind blowing! Thanks for your inspiration in so many ways – Angie, http://www.yourtrueselfblog.com
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Angie! I had so much fun with this theme! And my conversations with my sister get pretty interesting! We get passionately heated but we have so much respect for each other that it is all just fun banter between us. We once stopped talking to each other for about 2 years over some stupid disagreement and when we reunited we vowed to never do that again! Haha. Since you are as fascinated by space as I am, did you see this…Jupiter and Saturn Will Align to Create the First “Christmas Star” in Nearly 800 Years. I have to mark my calendar to make sure not to miss it! Have a wonderful weekend, my friend.
