The Best Day Ever: Thanksgiving Memories to Cherish for a Lifetime & Link Up On the Edge #174
Thanksgiving this year might go down in the history of me as one of the most memorable ones ever. I will cherish it forever and I do so hope that all other holidays can measure up. It’s funny because as my sister was planning the menu and the guest list and our activities for four days spent together, she gave me this warning…”I am afraid that my expectations for Thanksgiving this year are of Hallmark caliber.” And we all know that when expectations are set too high, we are usually let down…even if it is just a little. This time, however, I think our expectations were exceeded. And that is a beautiful thing. A really beautiful thing. Because we both needed it.
I rarely spend holidays with my sister due to the fact that we live nearly 300 miles apart. When we do venture to Pennsylvania, we always stay at my mother-in-law’s house which is about an hour’s drive from my sister’s house. If we travel for the holidays, we do make a point to visit my sister, but generally only for a few hours because up until this year she was unable to provide us with overnight accommodations. So we would visit for a bit and then get back on the road to Gramma’s house to get the kids to bed on time.
But this year was a bit different. For many reasons. One being that my younger nephew recently moved out of his bedroom into the basement apartment with his very lovely girlfriend whom I finally got to meet. So my sister did a bedroom makeover just for us to have a place to stay when we visit and not have to rush out before bedtime. The second reason was that this holiday season is a very emotional one for my sister. Every year, she fills her home with her kids and grandkids and her closest friends. When it comes to my family, it really is just my sister and me. Both parents passed away a really long time ago and all other family connections have faded away. Sadly, since last Thanksgiving, three of her closest friends who were regular guests at all of her holiday tables have passed away. And as the first holidays without your loved ones roll around, it is a very trying time. More than anything, my big sister wanted her little sister present for the holidays. And this little sister wanted to be there for her. So while her expectations were Hallmark-level, mine were, too. Although we did only watch one Hallmark movie in the four days that I was at her house.
We traveled to her house on Tuesday afternoon when the kids got home from school, arriving just after 8:00 p.m. This is generally the kids’ bedtime, but they were antsy from 5 1/2 hours in the car and they hadn’t seen their cousin, Lilah, in quite some time. Lilah (she is almost 10) is my nephew’s oldest daughter and she is just 15 months older than Archie. The two have been the closest of friends since birth and they literally pick right up where they left off from the last time they were together. I love to see that kind of friendship among little people. It warms my heart. Lilah stayed at her grandmother’s (my sister’s) house the entire time we were there, refusing to go home because Archie and Ralphie were there. Every night was a grand sleepover party for these three kids. They were inseparable for four straight days.
Thanksgiving Day rolled around and my sister insisted that everyone wear ugly Christmas sweaters or tops and we all obliged. It made for quite a festive showing. Sadly, we did not take one single group photo. But that’s okay because the memories are still ingrained in my heart even without photographic evidence…proof that living in the moment is sometimes much more powerful than worrying about capturing things on camera.
My great-niece Cece (she is almost 4) is a little spitfire and she and Ralphie gave each other a run for their money. There was one point when Jeff scolded Cece for doing something she wasn’t supposed to and she stood face to face with him, hands on hips, and emphatically stated, “I can do whatever I want.” To which Ralph replied, “Oh really? If you can do whatever you want, why don’t you say the F word. Go ahead. I dare you.” Oy. What am I going to do with these little ones?
But then Cece had this moment where she completely redeemed herself. I was sitting on the couch, just sort of taking it all in, appreciating how wonderful this time was and what a crazy, weird, insanely unique, and incredibly fun and loving family I have. In my head, these words came to mind, “This is the best day ever.” Right in that moment, Cece climbed up on my lap, took my face between her tiny hands, looked me directly in the eyes, and said, “Aunt Mimi, this is the best day ever.” Well, that was it. I was reduced to a puddle of tears as I tried to get the words out of my mouth, “Yes, it is, kiddo. It really, really is.”
And then there is Lou (1 1/2 years old), my nephew’s youngest child. This was the first time I was meeting this redheaded darling. He reminds me of Merrida’s triplet brothers in Brave. Gosh, he is a cutie. A little bashful at first, but he warmed up to me some and spent some time just sitting on my lap, taking it all in with me.
I also got to hang out with my nephews and their significant others and you know what? They are really freaking cool humans. I have known my older nephew’s wife since she was 15. I am in awe of what an amazing woman she has become. She was a pretty fantastic teenager, too. I always connected with her. But as I watched her in full-fledged adulthood, managing her three little ones while she helped with food preparations, I was so impressed with her.
Gosh, I am so blessed. And as I looked around at this home filled with so much love, I was overwhelmed with gratitude for these blessings. So while I don’t have a ton of photos to share from the day, I have a lifetime’s worth of memories to cherish. And even though it was sadness that brought us to my sister’s house on Thanksgiving this year, it was quite literally the happiest holiday I have had in a really long time.
How have your holidays been so far? Are you able to keep some perspective to appreciate the small blessings hiding within the grand chaos of this time of year?

Well this post is so sweet Shelbee, I am so glad you had such a wonderful Thanksgiving! Being with family is everything! I hope you get to spend more time with your sister and nephews and all the little ones – they are adorable! And look at that Ralphie – fashionable and he has culinary skills? Wow!

Thank you so much, Kellyann! It is super important to spend quality time with family. I know these holidays are really tough for you. I hope that you are surrounded by so much love as well. Now if only I could keep Ralphie on track to good things. This guy strays so easily to the darker side! Ha.

I’m glad you had such an incredible Hallmark Thanksgiving my friend! We’re the same…not really any family to speak of, just our little nuclear group, but dinner with my son, his future husband and his family is always incredible. The last several years my daughter, son and his fiance have started making a tradition of going to the holiday market in Pittsburgh. This year though, my husband has decided to go and we’re changing things up a bit. We’re still going to Pittsburgh (tomorrow actually), but we’re going to Phipps Conservatory for the holiday flower and light show…I can’t tell you how excited I am because it looks beautiful! Google it or look on Instagram, the pictures look magical! I think the memories and traditions are the most important part of the holidays and we have to make them even if our families aren’t necessarily like everyone else’s! xo

Debbie, thank you so much! I think these intimate holidays really do make for the most cherished memories! I love that you are going to do something new and fun with your family for the holiday. I will definitely check out the Phipps Conservatory. I hope you also have the best day ever!

Shelbee, I love this post for so many reasons…family, fun, new traditions, fabulous looking food and those cuties! Your sweet sister has been through a lot this past year! Sending cyber hugs for her as well. How sweet that it worked out for you to be able to spend time with her at her home. There’s something about that can’t be beat! Oh and you look adorable in that Christmas sweater – fun styling as always!

I had tears reading your post. Family becomes so much more important the older we get, and as you start losing those closest to you (and lots and lots of friends), you cling to them more and more. I can relate to this because my sister (whose wedding I recently headed to NC for) has 3 boys and their families were all there and reconnecting with my nephews and their wives and little ones was so awesome! I love love love the way you’ve styled that ugly sweater (the cutest ugly sweater ever!) – you’ve made it look so chic! The kids are all just little dolls and it’s so sweet that they’re as close as they are. My cousin and i got to reconnect at my sis’ wedding (after 45 years) and it was just wonderful to be back in touch with her (we were partners in crime when we were in our teens). Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful best day ever (and I love your sister’s comment about making it a Hallmark occasion)! And I’m so honored to be featured as your favorite fashion post in the link up!!!!

Ruth, what a beautiful comment! Thank you so much! I agree with you completely how the importance of family grows over time as certain generations of our families dwindle while the newer generations grow bigger. It really does keep things in perspective and make us much more grateful for what we have. I am so glad that you got to reconnect with so many family members at your sister’s wedding. What a very special time for you. I hope that your holiday season is equally blessed, my friend!

I’m so glad you got to spend so much time with your sister despite not having your parents. I loved reading this post and the pictures of the kids are wonderful. Mine was spent at home for the first time ever, just us, no one else but it also snowed for the first time ever. It was a treat! PS. How are you a great aunt?! You do not look old enough!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Alice, thanks so much! We have spent those holidays just us, snowed in, with no one else. And those were nice, quiet, peaceful times as well. But I think I definitely prefer the whole family together and all the good feels that come with that! I am a great-aunt because my big sister is an old fart! Hahaha. Just kidding. She is 6 years older than me and had her first son when she was 21, making me an aunt at 15. Then he had his first child when he was just 20, making me a great-aunt at 35…before I even became a mother myself at 36. Funny how those things work out that way!

I loved reading your account of Thanksgiving. My side of the family is small, just Mum and my brother and his family, and they’re 250 miles away (I saw them last weekend). I’d love to have a house full of people at Christmas and we usually have it on Boxing Day when John’s kids and their partners, and this year the first grandchild, come round.

Thank you, Gail! I do hope that you get your house full of loved ones this Christmas! Especially with the first grandchild arriving this year. How very special!

I love your beret with the pom on top. So cute. The sweater is so cute with the ruffle underneath. What a great idea. Nothing like a cozy plaid blanket scarf to keep you snug on a cold day. I wore mine the other day in the house because we are trying to save on electricity and had the heater on low so it was freezing! My daughter saw it and said, “OOO, can I have one.” 🙂
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thank you, Shannon! I basically live in my blanket scarves all winter long. I am always freezing and we keep our thermostat set at about 62. While I am all bundled up in a million layers, my kids are generally running around half naked. I can’t stand it because I get cold just looking at them! Are you getting your daughter a blanket scarf? It is the perfect gift idea!

Shelbee, I really enjoyed reading about your family and the time you had at your sisters. It is important to be with family. My Dad passed unexpectedly almost 4 yrs ago, and I do think of him often, certainly during the holidays. I love that you enjoyed your time with your great-nieces and nephews – the pictures were precious and boy, Frankie must really love bacon! 🙂 Love the puggie sweater, I have a few Christmas sweaters and love to dress the dogs up in their “Ugly Christmas sweaters”.
Have a great weekend!

Jess, thank you so much! I am so sorry that you lost your dad unexpectedly. It really does change the holiday dynamic after a close family member dies. But then you start to create new traditions and new memories even though it may feel like you are missing something for quite a long time.
I love when you dress up the pups! Too stinking cute. And I figured you would appreciate my pug sweater.
I am cracking up that this is the second time you called Ralphie “Frankie”! My dad’s middle name was Frank and our cat’s name is Frankie and I find it hilarious that you have that particular name stuck in your head for Ralphie! LOL By the way, he does love his bacon!
I hope your holiday season is filled with many blessings, my friend!

It sounds like you had a wonderful time! We are blessed to have most of the family close by but I kind of miss having my side of the family together more often. One of my brothers lives in Thailand right now and while my parents and my brother live within easy driving distance, the last get togethers were kind of shadowed with my mom’s struggles with cancer treatment. The outlook is looking better now as the cancer is gone so I am hoping she will be pain free at Christmas for our celebrations.

Shelbee,
I am so happy you had a lovely Thanksgiving with your sister in Pennsylvania!
I always enjoy spending the holidays with my family and treasure my time with my parents.
Family is the most important to me and I know it is to you.
Then I need to thank you for featuring my Christmas blog post!
I am so happy when others enjoy the work I do as an interior designer who also is a blogger.
So grateful for you my dear friend.
