“Taking in the Laundry” by Grandma Moses | Style Imitating Art
It’s Laundry Hanging Season, my favorite season of all!
About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of Meadow Tree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag Salazar, Terri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!
This Week’s Presenter
That would be me! I chose this painting because hanging my laundry outside to dry is one of my favorite things in life ever. It is my favorite household chore to do. I love breathing in the fresh air, I love the way my clothes smell when they are dried by the fresh air, I love that it doesn’t require electricity to dry my clothes outside, and I love that it makes me feel close to my mom. She always hung the laundry outside to dry, too! I get very excited when laundry hanging season starts and very sad when it ends. And since it has just started where I live, I want to honor my favorite household chore with this painting! Also, I really like the simplicity of folk art and the nostalgia of American folk art in particular.
The Artwork
“Taking in the Laundry” by Grandma Moses
I think this painting offers an abundance of inspiration for creating an outfit with its variety of colors and textures as well as its nostalgic appeal. I look forward to seeing how your inspiration manifests into an outfit!

Eeek, I am really super excited to show you the outfit I came up with for this one! It involves a very special upcycle project with my new swing machine.

I love this painting, Shelbee! And, I love hanging clothes out to dry. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to do that for the last eight years because of neighborhood covenants. There is nothing like sleeping on sheets that have dried in the wind!
I am just going to let my brain simmer with this one!

Marsha, I just got a little sad that neighborhoods have rules like that. First of all, who determines that hanging laundry looks unappealing? I absolutely love the sight of hanging laundry. It gives me all sorts of wonderful feelings! And then these covenants encourage environmentally unfriendly behaviors in favor of some simple-minded aesthetic preference. Apparently a world free of hanging laundry is more appealing than the earth itself! Let your brain simmer on that as well! Hahahahaha. I look forward to seeing what outfits come from this art!
