About Style Imitating Art

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of Meadow Tree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.

You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag SalazarTerri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!

This Week’s Presenter

Salazar chose this week’s work because the artist, Françoise Gilot, just passed away on June 6, 2023, at the age of 101 and this is a wonderful way to honor her and her artistic legacy.

The Artwork
“Suntan” by Françoise Gilot
Watercolor, gouache, and brush and ink on paper, 1973

Françoise Gaime Gilot was a French painter who, although an accomplished artist in her own right, became most well known for being Pablo Picasso’s muse. Her relationship with Picasso brought her a level of social celebrity that eclipsed her artistic career. Upon leaving Picasso 10 years into their relationship, he had her blacklisted by all of the art dealers he knew which essentially destroyed her reputation and ended her career, although she continued to create art until the end of her life.

The colors in this painting, “Suntan”, flash me right back to high school. We were the Freedom Patriots and our school colors were black and yellow. Check out this old photo from a high school swim meet. I am the 7th from the left with the super short hair wearing black and yellow checkered leggings (they look solid orange in the photo) and black and yellow hoodie.

If I still had those leggings, I would absolutely wear them for this challenge! But I do not. And since we are heading out to Smoked Country Jam on Thursday morning, I have already created and photographed not one, but two, outfits inspired by this painting. Now I just need to decide which one to send to Salazar!

Speaking of Salazar, if you want to join us for this week’s challenge and be featured with your art inspired outfit in her review post on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, please be sure to submit your photos to 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by 10:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, June 20, 2023.

Happy styling!

Black and yellow are also the colours of my home town football club. I never wear it in outfits because I feel like a football fan then.

Black and yellow are the colors for Purdue University where Mike earned his diploma. I, on the other hand, got mine from Indiana University. That means we are a house divided!

I really love this print and had the perfect dress about 50 years ago! I just wrote about it in a story for my kids’ Storyworth book! I shall have to work hard to come up with something for this challenge.

Have a wonderful time at the Smoked Country Jam!

Thanks so much, Marsha! It seems like black and yellow is a popular color combination for schools and sports teams. Normally, I would struggle creating an outfit with yellow as a dominant color, but lately I have been really drawn to yellows and oranges and have quite a few things to work with. I am glad to hear that you are diligently working on your Storyworth book!
