Summer Loving & Your Own Twist Link Up #34
It is that time again for our monthly Your Own Twist Link Up and I am happy to report that Monica of Jersey Girl, Texan Heart is back this month for July’s Summer Loving theme. Monica had to take a little hiatus from blogging the past few months…and as you can see, she is glowing with pregnancy as she anticipates the arrival of her wee Halloween baby at the end of October.
About Your Own Twist
Your Own Twist is a monthly link party hosted by Monica of Jersey Girl, Texan Heart and me on the third Thursday of every month with the goal of inspiring some of our friends to get creative with personal style.
The idea behind this collaboration is to take one common piece or theme and style it our own way with our own twist…Monica and I have both taken a lot of fashion inspiration from one another over the past few years even though we have totally different styles. It is always fun to see how we can interpret similar items in unique ways or what kind of twist we will each bring to the chosen theme.
We will let you know the themes well in advance in the event that you would like to use the theme for your own post and add it to the link party. However, any fashion posts are welcome regardless of whether you used the theme or not. Check out the graphic below which has some of our upcoming style prompts.
For this Summer Loving theme, I had planned on styling a flirty white dress from Every Pretty that is very reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe’s iconic white dress from The Seven Year Itch, but it didn’t arrive in time to photograph so stay tuned for that coming next week or two. It is such a gorgeous dress and I am really excited to channel my inner goddess when I put it on.
Since my romantic white dress was not an option for this Summer Loving theme, I decided to go with something red, the color of love. But not just any old red…summery red with a mix of nature prints and textures because this boho hippie girl really loves nature in the summer time.
I found this cute skater style dress on my birthday thrift shopping adventure back in May. I have a similar one in white and black that I adore. This style of dress is one of my favorites as the skater silhouette gives the illusion of definition on my very undefined waist. A skinny belt also helps to accentuate the waistline, adding even more definitive shape where I need it most.
While I liked the dress well enough styled alone with just a belt and a few other accessories, summer time is my favorite time to showcase my greatest closet love…kimonos. I have had this deep red floral kimono for a few years. I got it from Charlotte Russe for under $10 when I worked there a few years ago. I love the rich colors and the big bold floral print. It also features a drawstring tie at the waist which gives it really cute volume when cinched and tied. But I didn’t want to hide my cute dress, so the kimono was left open.
“No amount of water can quench the fire of love.”

My nude braided sandals are from my Charlotte Russe shoe haul this summer when I overindulged my braided sandal obsession on their BOGO shoe sale. These are seriously the most comfortable dressier sandals that I own. None of their shoes are priced over $40 either. And it also looks like their Buy 1, Get 1 for $1 shoe sale is still happening online. (I am not a CR affiliate just a happy customer.)
For jewelry, I opted for gold statement earrings and gold bracelets that were gifts from friends over the past few years. My gold Love necklace from Queen Bitter Jewelry was an obvious choice for Summer Loving style.
Once I had the outfit all put together, I felt like it really needed a summer hat. I reached for my very old and very versatile straw cloche hat. However, it has a black ribbon band which I wasn’t loving with the outfit since the only other black I am wearing is my hair. But that is a super easy fix if you have a drawer full of silky scarves to choose from. I dug around until I found one that coordinated in color and pattern and simply tied it around the hat covering its original black ribbon.
And that is my Summer Loving outfit that I would wear for just about any reason…a date night, a walk in the park, a stroll through the mall. Whatever activity I choose, I will always wear whatever I want!
Be sure to hop over and read the details of Monica’s Summer Loving outfit as well as to say hello and wish her all the good things that come with becoming a new momma! And link up your outfit posts as well. We would love to see what you are wearing! Next month’s Your Own Twist theme is Star Gazing and we invite you all to style something and share it with us the next time around.

You are making me wish that I had kept my cute braided sandlas. LOVE THEM!!!! I returned mine because I new they wouldn’t get any wear while I spent the summer away from the city and at the lake, mostly the beach and/or boat. But I love how cute yours look wit the dress and the whole outfit.

Thanks so much, Bo! These sandals are really comfortable! I had no trouble climbing down through some rocks and dirt paths to get to the river wearing them either. They did get a little dirty but they cleaned up easily. I hope you are enjoying your summer at the lake, my friend!

You have the best hats. I was just telling my sister that I wish I could wear hats, but I have big hair. LOL
Anyway, I adore your outfit. It’s so very Downton Abbey with a twist.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Aw, thanks so much, Daenel! I do love my hats! I never wore them when I had short hair though because I always felt like I looked like a man if all my hair was hidden under a hat! OMG, I can be so ridiculous. By the way, you have the most beautiful big hair I have ever seen, so maybe it’s not meant to be covered by a hat anyway!

Thanks so much, Amy! I was really excited and happy with the way this outfit came out! I am going out to dinner tonight and I was contemplating wearing this outfit. But I think it might be too cold today only hitting a high of 66 with thunderstorms all through the day into tomorrow.
