The Guitar by Juan Gris (Gouache on Canvas, 1914)
About the Artist: Juan Gris
José Victoriano González-Pérez, professionally known as Juan Cris, was a Spanish painter who was born in Madrid on March 23, 1887. He studied mechanical drawing/engineering at the Madrid School of Arts and Sciences from 1902-1904 and contributed drawings to local periodicals during this time. The following year, from 1904-1905, Gris studied painting with the academic artist José Maria Carbonero. In 1905, he officially adopted his professional name of Juan Gris.
After selling off most of his possessions, Gris moved to Paris in 1906 where he lived for most of the remainder of his life. He began painting seriously in 1910 but he did continue to submit humorous illustrations to various journals and periodicals until 1911. By this time, he had become friends with the most prominent artists of his generation, including Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Georges Braque. By 1912, he had developed his personal Cubist style becoming “the only Cubist talented enough to make Picasso uncomfortable.”
Gris’s first works were painted in the style of Analytical Cubism, a term he himself would later coin. After 1913, he began his conversion to Synthetic Cubism, which used collage extensively as a way to artistically interpret the subject of the piece. His Cubist peers Picasso and Braque remained practically monochromatic in their paintings while Gris set himself apart by using “bright harmonious colors in daring, novel combinations in the manner of his friend Matisse.”
From late 1916 through 1917, Gris’s works began showing “a greater simplification of geometric structure, a blurring of the distinction between objects and setting, between subject matter and background” which marked the beginning of his Crystal Cubism period. By 1919 and particularly 1920, artists and critics began to assert the importance of Gris’s synthetic approach in the overall scheme of advanced Cubism. In 1924, he expanded his artistic repertoire to include ballet set and costume designs for Sergei Diaghilev and the famous Ballets Russes.
Gris was married to Lucie Belin (1891–1942) and together the couple had one child, Georges Gonzalez-Gris (1909–2003). The family of three resided at the Bateau-Lavoir, 13 Rue Ravignan, Paris, from 1909 to 1911. In 1912, Gris met Charlotte Augusta Fernande Herpin (1894–1983), also known as Josette Gris, and she was living with the family by late 1913 or early 1914 as Juan Gris’s second companion and unofficial wife. The four of them lived together in their Paris home until 1922. By October 1925, Gris suffered frequently from bouts of uremia and cardiac issues. He died in Paris on May 11, 1927, from kidney failure, at the age of 40, leaving behind his wife Lucie, their son Georges, and his companion Josette.
About the Art: The Guitar
The Guitar is a 1914 still life painting done in the Synthetic Cubism style using gouache on canvas. Gouache is a water-based paint made of natural pigment, water, a binding agent, and sometimes an additional inert material. It is designed to be opaque and is similar to acrylic and oil paints in that it can form a superficial layer which supports an opaque painting style.
Between 1913 and 1916, guitars and violins became the main motifs of Gris’s paintings. The instruments he painted during this period tend to have magisterial qualities making them appear as objects of reverence. He used his art as a way to celebrate the attributes of music and in some way, “the instrument is a confrontation of symbols that evoke art in general, the art created by Gris and, naturally, Gris himself.”
The Guitar is currently part of a private collection and that always makes it difficult to find detailed information about a work. Regardless, it is a striking painting filled with bold lines, beautiful colors, and rich textures that it make it perfect for sartorial inspiration.

About My Outfit Inspired by The Guitar
I have to admit that I really struggled with this challenge. But in the end, the struggle was so worth it because I freaking love the outfit I created!
Honestly, I had no idea where to even begin. The colors in the painting are so beautiful and so perfect for creating a fall outfit but they are colors that are not abundant in my wardrobe. So I looked instead to some of the patterns in the painting to see if I had a matching print or two in my closet. And I kept coming back to this floral print dress with flowers very similar to the ones in the painting. But I just wore the dress last week on the blog so I wanted to share something different. I did transition the scarf from that outfit to this one though because the colors and print are too perfect not to include it.
Once I got that first dress out of my head, my eyes honed in on the tiny bit of spotted leopard-like print on the book binding at the bottom of the painting. And I remembered this little spotted mini dress. My new paisley print kimono in caramel was helpful in reflecting some more of the autumn hues as well as the vertical lines in the painting. I wore wooden jewelry to represent the wood texture on the leopard bound book and my brown suede boots reflect that big slab of dark brown in the center that appears sort of soft and supple like suede. Mustard tights and a dark green hat and handbag tie in the remaining colors from the painting and helped to create a cohesive color palette in my outfit.
As a last minute idea, I grabbed my son’s guitar as a prop, for obvious reasons. Now if only I knew how to play the thing. Well, at least I know how to dress myself. Perfectly artistic, perfectly bohemian, perfectly me!
Before I go, I have been wanting to share my new thrifted vase that I found a few months ago for my newly renovated dining room. I had been wanting a tall vase or two to place in the corners near my tall bookcases but home decor pieces are really stinking pricey. So I started checking in the thrift shops when I get out and about. I spotted this vase across the giant Salvation Army thrift store. It was standing all alone atop a really high shelf and the colors were so good for my dining room. I practically darted across the store when I saw it, anxious to see how much it cost. It was only $7.99 and now it’s mine! I just need to fill it with some greenery and feathers which will likely cost 5-10 times more than the vase itself. So in the meantime, it sits empty but it really reminded of The Guitar painting making this the perfect time to share it.
That concludes this week’s Style Imitating Art look. So how do you think I did with this challenge? I hope you enjoyed it and feel inspired yourself!
Be sure to check out Salazar’s interpretation of the painting as well as Terri’s take on it. If you would like to participate in this challenge and have your photo included in Salazar’s round up post on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, be sure to email your photos to her by Tuesday, November 1, 2022, by 10:00 p.m. EST. I am excited to see what you all style!
And now it’s time for spreading some kindness through my link party.

Bohemian perfection! I LOVE how you styled this challenge, Shelbee. I must admit, the inspiration did nothing for me at all, and I would have struggled big time to come up with an outfit to suit. But you look absolutely gorgeous. You’re right, the colours are perfect for this time of year, and i just love that you pinched your son’s guitar lol! Brilliant!
And that vase you found at the Salvation Army thrift store is perfect!
Big hugs

Now I need to start leaving my house so I can wear these fun outfits that I have been creating! I am feeling due for another thrift shop adventure, too. But I will wait until my sister visits in a few weeks because she loves to go to my thrift stores! Have a fabulous day, my friend.

I love the outfit you created, Shelbee! Beautiful all around, and yes, very Boho you. 😀 I have almost no brown in my closet (except for a bit of leopard, and one pair of brown jeggings) so I felt really too hampered to participate. Brown is just not a color I enjoy wearing for the most part, so it will likely remain underrepresented in my closet.
It it is a lovely painting. Such warmth in it.

Thanks so much, Michelle! I used to love browns but then steered away from them for a long time. But now that I have stopped dying my hair and my natural brown and gray colors are showing, I am having a renewed love for browns. These colors definitely exude a certain warmth, for sure. I hope you are having a wonderful week!

I love that we both did Kimonos! For some reason, this whole challenge had a late 60’s early 70’s vibe to me.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks, Terri! I absolutely love your kimono! I have so many, I could probably wear one for almost every SIA challenge! Hahaha. I agree that the colors and the patterns in the painting definitely have a bit of a 60s/70s feel. I am looking forward to seeing what others came up for this one!

Oh, Shelbee, I love that you used the spots at the bottom and found this dress to anchor your look! It looks fabulous with the kimono and all of your accessories! I think you are definitely the queen of the accessory!
And, I couldn’t figure out if Gris lived with both women at the same time or not. Thanks for clarifying that!

Shelbee, you did a beautiful job of creating a look to imitate the mood of this wounderful Cubist painting! I love the warm colors, layered textures and multiple prints in your outfit. It is so perfect! The painting has a very bohemian feel to it that reminds me of the 60’s, even thought it was painted in 1914. Also, thanks for the favorite mention, and sharing about the artist, Juan Gris. Enjoy the good weather while it lasts!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Di, thank you so much for this lovely comment! I thought this painting was extraordinary as well with all of is rich textures and autumn hues. I need to put this outfit on again and actually go somewhere wearing it! Terri also mentioned the 60s vibes from this painting. I feel like those colors really represent that era. We have been having incredibly warm weather for this time of year and I am enjoying every minute of it! I hope you are as well, my friend.

Bravo! Great interpretation! Loe the Epiphone guitar with the sunburst color, as in the artwork. The mustard tights and the floral patterns all mesh so well with the art. Love the boho kimono and how you styled this. The artwork is so pretty too- love the shapes and mix of patterns.
