Style Imitating Art: Sweet Dreams by Rus Khasanov
About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey and Terri of MeadowTree Style. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as curator, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the curator by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the curator will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join! You are invited to share your images on Instagram or other social media platforms. Just be sure to tag Salazar and Terri or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!

Sweet Dreams by Rus Khasanov (Motion Graphics, Digital Art, Digital Photography, 2016)
About the Artist: Rus Khasanov
Ruslan Khasanov is a Russian visual artist whose work is fueled by the motto “Beauty is Everywhere”. He expresses strong emotion through his visual arts which include music videos, typography, and illustration with experimentation and improvisation at the center of his creative process. Through his work, Khasanov desires to showcase the synergy between art, science, and design and organize these disciplines with mutual reinforcement.
Khasanov’s work is mainly characterized by very bright colors with abstract and random forms. He sees something in these forms that reminds him of the vastness of space as well as microorganisms. He finds inspiration in music, movies, dance, and people, but mostly looks to nature, the microscopic world, and space as his muses.
The artist has many high profile clients for his design work including Adobe, Atlantic Records, Dunkin’ Donuts, GQ, IBM, MAC Cosmetics, and Samsung. He has also won various awards and has exhibited his work internationally.
You can follow Rus Khasanov on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Vimeo, YouTube, and Behance.
About the Art: Sweet Dreams
Sweet Dreams is a continuation of the artist’s previous experimental videos, Pacific Light (2013) and ODYSSEY (2015). This abstract work is meant to provide “a kind of escape from the gray surrounding reality into a world of bright sweet dreams.” The video illustrates bursts of paint and oils and other elements in bold vibrant colors with a musical reel by Dmitry Evgrafov. The video runs for 1:49 and will mesmerize you straight into a dreamlike state of sweetness.
To create the visual effects in his videos, Khasanov has played with a variety of scientific experiments that have included things like chemical reactions, soy sauce, and fire. Underneath a microscopic lens, these elements explode into bold beautiful colors. Rather than adhering to the current trend of biomimicry, Khasanov captures actual biology and chemistry in his artwork.
He calls his experiments chaotic but it is the creative chaos of his love for the materials that energizes his work. And that is very evident in these super creative videos.

About My Outfit Inspired by Sweet Dreams
After watching the video a few times (because I was completely mesmerized and couldn’t stop), I decide to screen shot a few still frames to sort of narrow down my inspiration. There is a lot of color and movement in the video and I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with choices and which direction to go. Actually, the first thing that came to mind was this paint splatter sweatshirt that I received a few years ago as part of a brand collaboration with Dresslily. I had intended to restyle it for winter but when I went looking for it, I couldn’t find it.
In my fruitless search for the paint splatter top, I stumbled upon my bright pink tie dye hoodie that was part of a brand collaboration with Rosegal and it struck me as the perfect piece for this Style Imitating Art challenge. And then I remembered this cute pastel tie dye maxi dress that I picked up on my last thrifting adventure. It is a summer dress by Zara and it has spaghetti straps but one was broken. So I had to do a quick mending job before I could wear it. I layered a black turtleneck underneath the dress and now I wish I had taken photos of it without my hoodie because that looked super cute, too. But, as you can see, it is cold and snowy in my part of the world so I am hesitant to remove any of my layers if I don’t have to.
I wore black knee high lug sole boots and my black fingerless gloves to highlight the black hole in the middle of my hoodie. I thought my black and white polka dot coat was a nice addition to the mix of bold and abstract colorful happiness! My magenta earrings reflect the polka dots on my coat as well as some of the paint drips and droplets in the video.
After taking these photos, I went running errands and a lovely lady stopped me coming out of TJ Maxx as she enthusiastically told me how cheerful my outfit was! And here I thought I looked a little bit ridiculous. But if your outfit can make someone else smile as well as yourself, then that’s a winning outfit, for sure! I’ll wear it again, I think. Or something similar!

Both of those beautiful sweat shirts are perfect for this SIA challenge! I love them. I hope you find the paint splatter sweat shirt. Totally awesome outfits with both beautiful sweatshirts.

Thanks so much, Michelle! I think the paint one is in the same bin as the tie dye one. I just didn’t dig deep enough because the tie dye one was right on top, yelling at me to wear it!

That tie dye shirt (and the paint dripped one you can’t find!) both are perfect for this challenge.

Thanks so much, Joanne! I suspect the paint one is in the same bin as the tie dye one was, I just didn’t dig down deep enough! LOL. I will find it and wear it again!

I have so much fun not only looking at your outfits, but reading your writing! I think it’s a happy accident you didn’t find the original sweatshirt. Your plan b outfit is such a wonderful interpretation of the artwork! Isn’t it funny you knew exactly what to wear, and I panicked? But, you’re right…I spent so much time just watching the artwork…it was slightly hypnotic, slightly relaxing. I wonder if he ever sells anything to a person? And, how would you display it…a dedicated tv or screen? Anyhoo…I really enjoyed the challenge of this art.
Isn’t it wonderful when someone compliments you? I wonder if that lady felt the happiness you were sending out.

shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Marsha, thank you so much! I really did feel extra bouncy in this outfit! I wonder if the lady who complimented me could tell that? It’s hard to know when everyone’s faces are covered by masks! LOL
You bring up a great question about visual art works like Rus Khasanov’s. I imagine when his work is on display somewhere, it is on big giant monitors that make it look even more amazing! But as for purchasing it, I have no idea how that would work. I mean, you can access the whole video on the artist’s website. I know most of his work is commissioned by brands for marketing and advertising. Hmmm…now I am curious to find out!
I love the way you interpreted this artwork as well. You should not feel panicked by the challenge though…it is all just for fun! I usually just save the image on my phone and desktop and then stare at it for a few days. Eventually something pops right into my head and it works out perfectly!

Terri Gardner
You nailed it with both looks. I love the hoodie with the skirt. I keep wanting to try something like that. Keep it up with these cute and fun looks!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thank you so very much, Terri! This is one of the few times that I have tried layering over a maxi dress and it really does give you so many more styling options. However, the kangaroo pocket on the hoodie was rather tedious for this styling. But I made it work! I look forward to seeing how you try out this styling trick. Have a fabulous weekend, my friend!

It may bring together clever things like art, science and design but it’s just so damned BEAUTIFUL! I also watched another of his films called ‘Color Lover’ – just pure natural phenomenons that we know exist but fail to appreciate. Well done Salazar, what a brilliant choice.

Thanks so much, Pamela! Salazar really did pick a great one this time! I love learning about new artists especially contemporary ones who make bold statements about life, art, and the world in general. I will have to go watch “Color Lover” now as well. Thanks for sharing that! Have a great weekend, my friend.

I had fully intended to take part in the SIA but I always follow Daenel’s posts and was waiting for her to share the theme. I hadn’t realised she was no longer a host! What a shame! Oh well, I shall have to just check out Terri’s and Salazar’s instead from now on!
I think you look utterly fabulous, and I agree with the woman outside TJ Maxx. Such a happy look! I love it! That sweatshirt is out of this world gorgeous!

Omg such fun sweatshirts, especially that first one! I love your inspirations – I used to think about doing ‘style imitating art’ type blog posts when I first started blogging but only did it once or twice. Maybe I should get back into it, this looks so fun!
