Style Imitating Art: Paul Revere by John Singleton Copley & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up #211
Before I get into the heart of this Style Imitating Art post, I want to let you all know that I will be taking the next week off from blogging. I will still check comments and things like that but there will be no new posts until next Tuesday (March 2). My sister is coming to visit tomorrow and then we have some other family and friends coming into town for Jeff’s retirement ceremony. I am super excited to see everyone and I want to just be in the moments enjoying every little bit of it. I hope you all have a great week!
Now let’s get to my SIA outfit and all the arty things…
About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Daenel of Living Outside the Stacks, Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, and Terri of Meadow Tree Style. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as curator, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the curator by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the curator will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join! You are invited to share your images on Instagram or other social media platforms! Just be sure to tag Salazar, Terri, and Daenel or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!
The Inspiration Artwork
The inspiration artwork was curated by Terri of Meadow Tree Style. You can read why Terri has chosen this specific piece as her inspiration artwork here.
Paul Revere by John Singleton Copley (1768)
Today I am going to keep my art history lesson really short because I just can’t seem to focus with the excitement of the coming days looming over me!
John Singleton Copley was a well-established portrait painter for the wealthy in colonial New England. His portrait of Paul Revere is unique amongst his works for the informality of the subject’s attire and demeanor. Smart History shares a really wonderful analysis of this portrait.
I really like when the prompts for Style Imitating Art are portraits. I enjoy recreating what the subject is wearing as well as their poses. Paul Revere’s billowy shirt reminded me of this oversized white shirt dress from Zara that I just thrifted (new with tags) for $10. I layered a black thrifted sweater dress as my base layer because it is really cold here. Then I added a black long line vest which mimics Mr. Revere’s waistcoat. My old two-toned riding boots were an obvious choice of footwear…I have always referred to these boots as my Paul Revere boots!
As a tribute to Paul Revere’s silversmith craft, I kept my jewelry in silver tones including my silver key necklace. I used a bronze sequined clutch to add some more metallics into the mix. My brooch is a series of earrings in metallics and pearls. The floral neckerchief was an afterthought to bring some more browns into the outfit reflective of the wooden details in the portrait.
I also wore Jeff’s old Army trench coat that I just inherited and his black military gloves. These seemed perfectly appropriate for an outfit inspired by Paul Revere’s portrait.
Did I mention how cold it is? I know it is unseasonably cold everywhere, but I seriously don’t know if I can’t take much more of it. How many layers can I wear without looking like the Michelin Man? For these photos, I was wearing a halftee and tights underneath a sweater dress underneath a shirt dress underneath a long vest underneath a trench coat. And I was still freezing.
What do you think of this Paul Revere-inspired outfit? To see more outfits inspired by this painting, please visit Terri’s post for the complete roundup of submissions. Have you joined the Style Imitating Art challenges yet? Be sure to check for the next prompt on Monday, March 1.
I hope you all have a wonderful week! I’ll be back next Tuesday!

Even if you wear cold all your layers look great for the cold day! I like how you layered so well to match the theme of the painting too – you did a great job recreating a more feminine take on the outfit! 🙂

Your interpretation of the Paul Revere painting is spot on! Love your layers and styling! I’m so over the cold weather too! We have so much snow I don’t think it will ever warm up and melt.

Thank you, Jill! I just saw that we are supposed to have rain tomorrow with a high temperature of 39 so I am filled with hope that it will melt some of this ridiculous snow. It is piled above my front porch and back fence and the heaps from the snowplows on the curbs are taller than me!

Thanks so much, Mireille! I had another fun story to share about Paul Revere in this post and I just got so lazy with writing so I left it out. But now I will share it with you…a few weeks ago, Archie and I were doing a Mad Libs book from 1980 that I recently found in my basement. There was a Paul Revere story and when I read it with Archie’s prompts, Jeff and I were laughing so hard and the poor child didn’t understand any of it because he has not learned a thing about Paul Revere yet! I was wondering if they even teach that anymore and I saw his Social Studies assignment for this week and it’s all about the 13 colonies…so maybe he will be a little ahead of the game with all this weird Paul Revere stuff that keeps popping up around us!

These styling art posts are always so fascinating to me. I took a lot of art history when I was in college and I feel I’ve forgotten so much that I used to know. You really nailed this one with your look, especially the side by side you share of the painting next to you doing the same pose. Oh, enjoy your week off from blogging.
