“Strawberry Tea Set” by Childe Hassam | Style Imitating Art
Are you ready to get creative with your wardrobe? How about styling an outfit inspired by this lovely oil painting?
About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of Meadow Tree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag Salazar, Terri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!
This Week’s Presenter
Terri chose this week’s art, “Strawberry Tea Set”, an oil on canvas by American Impressionist painter, Frederick Childe Hassam, later known as just Childe Hassam. Along with Mary Cassatt and John Henry Twachtman, Hassam was instrumental in promoting Impressionism to American collectors, dealers, and museums.
“Strawberry Tea Set”, painted in 1912, is connected to a series of Hassam’s works known as “The Open Windows”. This was one of his most popular series with the images usually featuring a female model in a kimono near a lightly-curtained or open window. These paintings were very popular during his career. You can read more about why Terri chose this work here.
The Artwork
“Strawberry Tea Set” by Childe Hassam
Well, you know I was all in at kimono! And how gorgeous is the minty greenish one the woman is wearing in the painting? I have only one kimono in a similar shade with white polka dots that might actually work really well for this challenge. And I also have my minty green duster that I styled for Lotus Pond by Ray Morimura back in May. I love the color palette of this oil painting and am excited to see the creative styles that you all share!
If you want to be featured with your art inspired outfit in Terri’s review post on July 13, 2022, be sure to submit your photos to her at meadowtreestyle@gmail.com by 10:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, July 12, 2022.
Happy Styling!
Keeping it on the edge,

Interestingly enough, I recently purchased a pale green kimono as well. I’ve been wanting to wear it, but the weather is warm and I haven’t reached it for it. I’m looking forward to this opportunity to style it!

Oooh, I can’t wait to see it! I photographed my outfit yesterday. It was challenging getting the pieces all just right and I tried on about a dozen different combinations before setting on the final one. But I am happy with the end result!

I am, too, Maureen! I enjoy writing these art posts so much. It feels like a high school research paper and I love it because I’m a nerd!

I find this piece very calming as well. I love the color palette but I don’t have very much in it either. But I did come up with something that worked and already photographed it! Yay for getting a jump on things! I look forward to seeing what everyone else comes up with.

I don’t have a lot in minty green either and I am not sure why because I love this color! I went all minty and white with my outfit with some fun little details that I am keeping secret until I post on Monday! Haha. I look forward to seeing all the outfits for this one.
