Still Life by Kristy Goggio | Style Imitating Art

Ohhhhh, I am so excited to share this next painting with y’all!

About Style Imitating Art

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of Meadow Tree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.

You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag SalazarTerri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!

This Week’s Presenter

It was my turn to choose and I have a newly special-to-me oil painting to share.

The Artwork
Still Life by Kristy Goggio
Oil on canvas (circa 1990s)

Here’s the story of this painting and why it is special to me.

I went shopping on my birthday with my birthday coupons in hand when I found this gorgeous still life oil painting in a local thrift shop for $13 ($9.75 with my birthday coupon). I immediately fell in love with the colors but I was not so fond of the dark bronzy plastic frame. So I gave it a quick makeover with some sandpaper, a sponge, and white paint and it is perfect for my bohemian bedroom.

Then I thought it would be fun to feature the artist for our next SIA challenge. So I did some research and this is what I found.

Kristy Goggio is a fine artist from Wisconsin. Her art has been exhibited in fine art galleries around the world while she continues to teach non-accredited painting and drawing classes in the Milwaukee and Waukesha areas. Her current art is much more fantastical and magical with a heavy focus on nature, relationships, and our relationships with nature while her earlier work consisted of many still life oil paintings that were used on household prints and other home decor items sold by retailers such as Bed, Bath & Beyond, Kohl’s, and Pier One.

I didn’t get great photos of the frame before I painted it, but I found this framed still life by Kristy Goggio for sale on Etsy with the identical frame. The Etsy description says the work is “Vintage from the 1990s” so I am assuming my still life is also from the 1990s. The canvas measures approximately 24 x 36 inches and the frame is approximately 32 x 44 inches. It is currently on exhibition in Watertown, New York, in my bedroom above my dresser.

My frame after its makeover
I am in the process of making rag curtains for this window and I am going to refinish the dresser in a much lighter color. I think the glider also needs fresh new upholstery. So much to do, one thing at a time. At least now I have a gorgeous original oil painting to cast my first morning gaze upon while I contemplate doing all the other things!

I love the deep rich colors in this painting and thought they were beautiful inspiration for styling an outfit. If you want to join us with your own sartorial interpretation of this still life, please send your photo to shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com by 10:0 p.m. EST on Tuesday, July 18, 2023. I will share my gallery post the following day on Wednesday, July 19, 2023.

Happy styling, my friends!
