Songful Style | “Love at First Sight” by Kylie Minogue & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up On the Edge #640
It is time for another song to inspire another outfit and you are invited to play along! Let’s get right to it.
About Songful Style
Songful Style is an ageless style challenge series hosted by Suzy of The Grey Brunette, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, Marsha of Marsha in the Middle, and Michelle of Funky Fashion Style.
Each month we will share a song with the lyrics and video and we invite you to use whatever aspect of the song that inspires you to create an outfit.
It is similar to Style Imitating Art where we use artwork to inspire our outfit creations. Except Songful Style gives you lyrics, music, video, and album artwork to inspire your fashion creativity. You may even find inspiration in a memory triggered by the selected song. It is all open to your own personal interpretation and just a fun way to discover new music and get a little bit more creative with your wardrobe.
Anyone is welcome to join us on a permanent basis or you can just play along without any obligation to do anything other than feel inspired. We are flexible and fun and just want to find more ways to play dress up because it’s what we enjoy doing!
We will be posting on the last Monday of each month and will announce our song choice for the following month at the end of each post.
For this month’s Songful Style prompt, Suzy chose “Love at First Sight” by Australian singer/songwriter Kylie Minogue, a most perfect song for February, the month of love. Speaking of the month of love, look at these beautiful tie dye roses my husband sent to me on Valentine’s Day!

The Lyrics
“Love at First Sight” by Kylie Minogue
Thought that I was going crazy Just having one of those days yeah Didn't know what to do Then there was you And everything went from wrong to right And the stars came out and filled up the sky The music you were playing really blew my mind It was love at first sight 'Cause, baby, when I heard you For the first time, I knew We were meant to be as one Was tired of running out of luck Thinking 'bout giving up yeah Didn't know what to do Then there was you And everything went from wrong to right And the stars came out and filled up the sky The music you were playing really blew my mind It was love at first sight 'Cause, baby, when I heard you For the first time I knew We were meant to be as one (Meant to be as one) 'Cause, baby, when I heard you For the first time I knew We were meant to be as one Everything went from wrong to right And the stars came out and filled up the sky The music you were playing really blew my mind It was love at first sight Love at first sight, love at first sight Love, ooh, it was love, it was love at first sight 'Cause, baby, when I heard you For the first time I knew We were meant to be as one (Meant to be as one) 'Cause, baby, when I heard you For the first time I knew We were meant to be as one It was love, it was love, it was love, it was love Ooh, it was love, it was love, it was love, it was love Ooh, it was love, it was love, it was love, it was love
About the Artist and the Song
Kylie Minogue is an Australian singer, songwriter, and actress who has sold over 80 million records worldwide, making her the highest-selling female Australian artist of all time. She was born on May 28, 1968, in Melbourne, the eldest of three children, to Ronald, a car company accountant, and Carol Ann, a former ballet dancer. She is of English and Welsh descent with an Irish surname. Her parents moved to Australia in 1958 as part of an assisted migration program on the ship Fairsea, which transported refugees and immigrants from Europe to the Land Down Under from 1947-1969. On board the Fairsea with the Minogue family was also the Gibb family of Bee Gees fame.
Minogue’s family moved around the Melbourne area frequently during her childhood in an effort to manage living expenses, which the artist found unsettling as a child. She sought solace in reading, sewing, and playing the piano and violin. She has described herself as being of “average intelligence” and “quite modest” during her youth and says she also struggled with making friends.
In 1979, ten year old Kylie landed a role in the soap opera The Sullivans and subsequently had a minor part in Skyways in 1980. In 1985 at the age of 16, she was cast as a lead in The Henderson Kids where she was labeled as fragile because she would break down in tears when scolded for forgetting her lines. As a result, her character was written off the show in the second season which the producer claims “turned out to be the best thing for her.” In 1986, she was cast as a schoolgirl turned garage mechanic in the soap opera Neighbours. As a result of her success on Neighbours, Minogue became the first person to win four Logie Awards in one year and was also the youngest recipient of the “Gold Logie” as the country’s “Most Popular Television Performer.”
And then in July of 1988, she released her first studio album, Kylie, to mixed reviews of her bubblegum pop sound and dated production. But the album also received commercial success peaking at number one in the UK and becoming the fifth highest selling album of the 1980s, launching Minogue into musical stardom. During the course of her 44 year career, Minogue has received many accolades including a Grammy Award and two MTV Music Awards. She has participated in fundraising initiatives for various philanthropic organizations including becoming an ambassador for breast cancer research after receiving a breast cancer diagnosis in 2005 at the age of 36. I do believe that Ms. Minogue meets all the criteria for Spunky Old Broad status!
“Love at First Sight” is the third single from Minogue’s eighth studio album Fever which was released in 2001. The song was written by Minogue, Richard Stannard, Julian Gallagher, Ash Howes, and Martin Harrington, as a dance-pop song which describes the singer’s belief in love a first sight. It is unrelated to a song of the same name which was released on her debut album Kylie in 1988. That little fact alone thoroughly confused me! Why would you release two totally different songs with the same title? In my opinion, the 2002 song is much better than the 1988 song as it very clearly showcases Minogue’s evolution and growth as an artist.
“Love a First Sight” (2002) received generally positive reviews from music critics who applauded the song’s commercial appeal but it was criticized for its production similarities to the previous singles released from Fever. The song was a commercial success worldwide charting in the top 10 in Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Denmark, Ireland, Spain, and New Zealand. The official music video was shot in single take mottion and features Minogue with her background dancers in a futuristic maze donning some pretty unique avant-garde costumes. This song earned Minogue her first Grammy nomination for “Best Dance Recording.” She was nominated the following year in the same category for “Come into My World” which won her the Grammy Award. And she was nominated in the same category two more times in 2005 and 2006.
At 54 years young, Kylie Minogue is sill going strong in the entertainment industry!

It seems like early stardom is so hard on some kids. Obviously she has risen above it. I wasn’t familiar with her until Suzy chose this song, which is what makes this challenge so fun.

Love the face flowers! Sweeet! I didn’t listen to her music, so it was newer to me. Love the lyrics! Her style in the 80s was something I could relate too and I had her hair!
Hope you are doing well!

Now, those are gorgeous roses…and so perfect for you, Shelbee! I remember hearing Kylie Minogue on the radio, but I can’t really say I know much of her catalog! This is going to be a tough one to style! I’d love to wear my whale tail, but you really don’t want to see that…hahahaha!!! I will probably go for one of her older looks unless I could recreate that silver/black one…love that headdress. I bet I could call my good friend, Elton! I’m sure he has one lying about somewhere! Anyway, fun post, and thanks so much for the link party! Hope you’re enjoying your trip!
