Songful Style | “Look What You Made Me Do” by Taylor Swift & #SpreadTheKindness Link Party #294

Yesterday, we shared our colorful outfits inspired by “Over the Rainbow” by Hawaiian musician, singer, songwriter, and sovereignty activist Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, which means today I overload you with more melodic inspiration for our next Songful Style challenge. It was Suzy’s turn to choose a song to inspire our looks for October 31, 2022, and she picked “Look What You Made Me Do” by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift because the official music video has a Halloween element to it and is visually beautiful with so much fabulous sartorial inspiration.

About Songful Style

Songful Style is an ageless style challenge series hosted by Suzy of The Grey Brunette, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle

Each month we will share a song with the lyrics and video and we invite you to use whatever aspect of the song that inspires you to create an outfit.

It is similar to Style Imitating Art where we use artwork to inspire our outfit creations. Except Songful Style gives you lyrics, music, video, and album artwork to inspire your fashion creativity. You may even find inspiration in a memory triggered by the selected song. It is all open to your own personal interpretation and just a fun way to discover new music and get a little bit more creative with your wardrobe.

Anyone is welcome to join us on a permanent basis or you can just play along without any obligation to do anything other than feel inspired. We are flexible and fun and just want to find more ways to play dress up because it’s what we enjoy doing!

We will be posting on the last Monday of each month and will announce our song choice for the following month at the end of each post.

The Lyrics
“Look What You Made Me Do” by Taylor Swift
I don't like your little games
Don't like your tilted stage
The role you made me play of the fool
No, I don't like you

I don't like your perfect crime
How you laugh when you lie
You said the gun was mine
Isn't cool, no, I don't like you (oh!)

But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time
Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time
I got a list of names, and yours is in red, underlined
I check it once, then I check it twice, oh!

Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me...
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do

I (I) don't (don't) like your kingdom keys (keys)
They (they) once belonged to me (me)
You (you) asked me for a place to sleep
Locked me out and threw a feast (what?)

The world moves on, another day another drama, drama
But not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma
And then the world moves on, but one thing's for sure
Maybe I got mine, but you'll all get yours

But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time (nick of time)
Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time (I do it all the time)
I got a list of names, and yours is in red, underlined
I check it once, then I check it twice, oh!

Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me...
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do

I don't trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I'll be the actress starring in your bad dreams
I don't trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I'll be the actress starring in your bad dreams
I don't trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I'll be the actress starring in your bad dreams
I don't trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I'll be the actress starring in your bad dreams

I'm sorry
But the old Taylor can't come to the phone right now
Why? Oh, 'cause she's dead (oh)

Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me...
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do

Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me...
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do
About the Artist and the Song

Taylor Swift is an American singer-songwriter who rose to fame at a very young age. Born on December 13, 1989, in Reading, Pennsylvania, she is just 32 years old and has earned 11 Grammy Awards, an Emmy Award, 34 American Music Awards, 29 Billboard Music Awards, 58 Guinness World Records, 14 MTV Video Music Awards, 12 Country Music Association Awards, 8 Academy of Country Music Awards, and 2 Brit Awards. As a songwriter, she has been honored by the Nashville Songwriters Association, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the National Music Publishers’ Association. In 2015, she became the youngest person on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. The following year, at the 2016 64th BMI Awards, Swift was the first woman to be honored with an award named after its recipient.

“Look What You Made Me Do” was released on August 24, 2017, as the lead single on Swift’s sixth studio album, Reputation. The single is a dance-pop song with various references to events that led to the tarnishing of her reputation. After taking a year long hiatus from public life, Swift released this song which has been called one of pop music’s most memorable comebacks by multiple music publications. The song was met with polarized reception with some music critics praising her new direction as a fierce return to pop music while other critics were disappointed in her change of style. Despite any negative reception, the song became Swift’s fifth number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 and one of the most dominant hits in the chart’s history. It had the most plays in a single day on Spotify, topped the Hot 100 for three consecutive weeks, and debuted at number one on the Billboard Digital Song Sales and Streaming Song Charts with 353,000 downloads and 84.4 million streams.

Three days after the song’s release, the music video premiered on the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards and garnered 43.2 million views within the first 24 hours of being released on YouTube. The video was ranked by both Billboard and Rolling Stone as one of the best music videos of 2017. As of 2018, the song is certified 4x platinum for exceeding 4 million units sold in the United States. The song also received platinum or multi-platinum certifications in more than 10 other countries.

Album Covers & Other Images

Remember that you can use anything related to this song to inspire your outfit. You are not limited to just what I have shared here. Feel free to do your own research if you’d like and then create an outfit that is inspired by anything about this song that moves you. I am uncertain yet what I will be wearing, but I definitely think I will be drawing my inspiration from the artist’s amazing outfits featured in the video. Those thigh high red boots are speaking to me and I have a similar pair that are still unworn. Perhaps it is time for those boots to come out and play.

If you want to join us in styling your own look inspired by Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do”, we will have a link party on Monday, October 31, 2022, where you can share your post. We would love to see your Songful Styles! And remember to dance like nobody is watching. Or maybe dance like everyone is watching! Happy styling, my friends.
