Songful Style Link Party | “Hi-Heel Sneakers” by Tommy Tucker
It’s time for the third installment of Songful Style and it was Michelle’s turn to pick the tune. She chose the very catchy blues song “Hi-Heel Sneakers” by Tommy Tucker. You can find the full lyrics and other song details in this post.
About Songful Style
Songful Style is a new ageless style challenge series hosted by Suzy of The Grey Brunette, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, Michelle of My Bijou Life, Marsha of Marsha in the Middle, and Anne of Spy Girl.
Each month we will share a song with the lyrics and video and we invite you to use whatever aspect of the song that inspires you to create an outfit.
It is similar to Style Imitating Art where we use artwork to inspire our outfit creations. Except Songful Style gives you lyrics, music, video, and album artwork to inspire your fashion creativity. You may even find inspiration in a memory triggered by the selected song. It is all open to your own personal interpretation and just a fun way to discover new music and get a little bit more creative with your wardrobe.
Anyone is welcome to join us on a permanent basis or you can just play along without any obligation to do anything other than feel inspired. We are flexible and fun and just want to find more ways to play dress up because it’s what we enjoy doing!
We will be posting on the last Monday of each month and will announce our song choice for the following month at the end of each post.
Of all the things that are heaped and piled and shoved and stored between my closet room and my basement, there is not a single pair of high heel sneakers. My husband couldn’t get over it when I told him I had to style an outfit inspired by a song called “Hi-Heel Sneakers”. In fact, he even suggested I buy a pair of high heel sneakers specifically for this challenge. But I refused because I just don’t think high heel sneakers are really my jam.
Instead, I focused on the opening line of the song, “Put on your red dress, baby.” Well, red dresses I have so that was an easy enough task. But the whole idea of sneakers remained in my head so I thought a sporty red dress would be best.
This red sweatshirt dress is a tad too big on me so I tied a black hoodie around my waist to cinch it. I just got this hoodie at the Umphrey’s McGee concert in Asheville in February and it immediately became my favorite thing to wear. I wear it around the house nearly every day unless it is being laundered. I was happy to incorporate it as an accessory in this fun outfit.
Then I paired it with some high heel boots that sort of resemble sneakers in a Sporty Spice kind of way. My over the knee red tube socks give the boots much more of a sneaker vibe, I think.
I did not leave any fashion reference from the song lyrics go unacknowledged. There is the line “And-a bring along some boxin’ gloves in case some fool might wanna fight,” so I added my handy black fingerless gloves. They are probably not that great for fighting, but I am much more of a lover anyway.
There is also the line that says, “Wear your wig-hat on your head”. Well, I don’t own an actual wig-hat, but I do have lots of other hats so I added my black and white newsboy cap for a little extra something.
And there you have it…my outfit inspired by “Hi-Heel Sneakers”. How did I do?

The next song for our May 30, 2022, post is “Hello, Goodbye” by the Beatles chosen by Marsha because she loves the Beatles and wanted one of their songs for her first pick. Tomorrow I will share more details including lyrics, video, and other inspirations that I can find relating to the song. If you are interested in joining us, you are welcome to begin styling now or check back tomorrow for additional inspiration relating to the song.

Shelbee, you absolutely NAILED IT!! I love the heels you’re wearing, they’re just perfect for this challenge, and I love that we both wore red dresses—although I’m sure everyone else may do the same too lol!! I love you put this all together. I thought about wearing a hat, but I don’t have that many and none would have looked any good with my choice of outfits. This was a fun one though, wasn’t it?!
Big hugs

Aw, thanks so much, Suzy! This was super fun! I have a bunch of red dresses and considered wearing a fancier one with sneakers like you did! But then I realized that all of my red dresses are way too big now and this was the easiest one to make work from that angle. I thought we might all end up in red dresses, too, but we didn’t! This was super fun and I love every look created!

I love this outfit! The socks were a stroke of genius for bringing in the sneaker vibe. And the boots are so cute. Well done, my friend, well done!

Aw, thanks so much, Michelle! I actually started out with white tube socks that have a black stripe and a pink stripe at the top. But the red was way better. But do you know how hard it is to match reds?! These were a little off but not too bad!

The socks didn’t look off at all to me. And yes, reds are crazy to try and match!

Yes, they were close enough to work. But side by side the socks have a bit more blue in the tone than the dress does. Meh, I am an anything goes kind of girl anyway! So who cares if they don’t match exactly!?

You look extreem powerful in this outfit! Perhaps it’s the red, perhaps its the poses, perhaps its just you! Anyway, it’s a great interpretation of the song!

Awwww, Nancy! Thank you so much, my friend! You are so sweet. I needed a little mood boost today, too!

Oh, I knew if anyone would have high heeled sneakers it would be you, Shelbee! At least, I think they read as sneakers. I love everything about this look! I didn’t even think about a hat…I was just flummoxed over the wig hat!!! This was such a fun song! I’m so glad Michelle picked it!

Hahaha, thanks, Marsha! I had to research what exactly a wig-hat was but knew I was just going to wear a hat! I wear hats 80% of the time anyway. What I understand a wig-hat to be in the context of the song is the nylon cap that one wears to hold their natural hair in place before putting a wig on or just a nylon cap. I had to dig a bit to find that because the first page of Google results only shows those silly hats that have hair attached…called wig hats. I am glad Michelle chose this song as well! I had never heard it before and I love learning new music. And the outfits were so much fun! Now onto your challenge…

If I ere to ever wear a sneaker it would be these. Love them! xx

Thanks so much, Laurie! I have a few pairs of sneakers, but sneakers are definitely not my jam either unless I am exercising!

What a fun collab and outfit Shelbee! You really turn art and now music into a work of heart. I love your take on this song and what you are wearing is something playful, cozy and dang right chic! I am not a heels fan either and totally agree with the route you took. Two thumbs up!

Maureen, thank you so much! I did feel really quite playful in this outfit! Jeff kept saying how much he liked all the red because it was so eye-catching. I ended up getting too cold though to wear it all day and had to put pants on!

Great job, Shelbee!!! I love how you pivoted from the “high heel sneakers” title to the opening line about the “red dress.” You really nailed it. I love the red knee socks with the red dress. And your white boots are a great addition to the overall look.

Carol, thank you so very much! I was really happy with how this all came together to represent the song lyrics! I felt fun and flirty wearing it and received lots of compliments on it, too. My favorite compliment came from my 9 year old. He said, “I like your outfit, Mommy. You look like a high school cheerleader.” Haha. Not that I was going for high school cheerleader but a kid-approved outfit is always nice considering they always think they are much cooler than their parents!
