Songful Style Link Party 9 | “Look What You Made Me Do” by Taylor Swift
Marsha, Suzy, and I are back with our ninth Songful Style Link Party where we combine our love for music and fashion into one songfully sartorial post. This month’s song, “Look What You Made Me Do” by Taylor Swift was chosen by Suzy to inspire our outfits. You can read more here about the history of this memorable comeback song, some details about this empowering female artist, and how she has become one of the best selling music artists of all time at only 32 years old.
About Songful Style
Songful Style is a new ageless style challenge series hosted by Suzy of The Grey Brunette, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle.
Each month we will share a song with the lyrics and video and we invite you to use whatever aspect of the song that inspires you to create an outfit.
It is similar to Style Imitating Art where we use artwork to inspire our outfit creations. Except Songful Style gives you lyrics, music, video, and album artwork to inspire your fashion creativity. You may even find inspiration in a memory triggered by the selected song. It is all open to your own personal interpretation and just a fun way to discover new music and get a little bit more creative with your wardrobe.
Anyone is welcome to join us on a permanent basis or you can just play along without any obligation to do anything other than feel inspired. We are flexible and fun and just want to find more ways to play dress up because it’s what we enjoy doing!
We will be posting on the last Monday of each month and will announce our song choice for the following month at the end of each post.
Be sure to check out my fabulous friends and how they have interpreted this song into style…just click their blog links for more songful style inspiration!

My outfit was inspired by Taylor’s look that you can see 1:35 into the music video. Since most of the video is set in a cemetery, I decided to use that as a background instead of an indoor location. We actually drove round and round the cemetery looking for a headstone that said either “Taylor” or “Swift” but we had no luck! Instead we got “Flanagan” and “Bradley”. May they rest in peace. Along with Taylor Swift’s reputation.
There is so much brilliant outfit inspiration in this video that I struggled a bit figuring out where to begin. So I went through the video and took a screenshot of each of the different outfits that Taylor wears in it. Then I headed into my closet room to see what kind of sartorial sorcery I could stir up. I actually have quite a few wardrobe pieces that are similar to Taylor’s but most of mine are thrifted or clearance items where hers most likely are not.
Here’s a sampling of the artist’s outfits from the music video.
After going through my closet and taking into account the weather, I decided her cat outfit would be something fun that I could manage to put together easily. I had the tall red stiletto boots (mine were $10 on an end of season clearance sale) and I had a tiger sweatshirt (also purchased on clearance for less than $20). I do not have a cat mask but I do have a kitten hat (purchased at wholesale for less than $5). And with those three key elements on hand, the rest of this look fell into place like magic.
I wore a black turtleneck tunic and black biker shorts for my base layer. Since my kitten hat is all bedazzled with sparkles (like Taylor’s tiger sweatshirt), I thought a pile of crystal and pearl necklaces would be super fun. I love the way the crystals lay right between the tiger’s eyes like she is a regal animal empress. And I love that today is Halloween and I am sharing an outfit that could absolutely pass for a costume or just a regular outfit. Meow.
After I had this outfit on and took the photos, I realized that other than the heels this was a really comfortable outfit for a day of running kids around. Ralph had a birthday party that evening and I had to run him to Target for a gift before dropping him off. I decided that I would keep this outfit on but change my boots to more comfortable ones. So I went for over the knee boots in pale pink that have a block heel in rose gold. The block heel was way better for walking through Target.
My favorite part of this outfit is this story…
As we were driving to the birthday party, Ralph looked over at me and said, “Mom, my friends and the parents at this party are going to think you’re my older sister not my mom.” When I asked him why, he replied, “Because you look like a teenager in that outfit.” I asked if that was bad and he said, “Nope! I like it!” I have taught him well…no matter what your age is, you should wear whatever makes you feel happy (and elicits compliments from kids)! I think all of us could benefit from the perspective of children. We should listen to them more.
If you would like to join us for next month’s Songful Style challenge, we will be hosting a link party on November 28, 2022, featuring our outfits inspired by my song choice, Witch Doctor performed by Ross Bagdasarian, under his stage name David Seville (from Alvin and the Chipmunks). I will share more details about this song later in the month to help inspire your next outfit creation. Happy styling!

Hehe, thanks so much, Sally! I wore the sweatshirt and hat with leggings on Halloween night for front porch sitting and candy distribution. I was purrfectly comfortable and still festive for the holiday!

Well done! You’re right, there were a lot of possible prompts in this video. You nailed it with the outfit you chose. I like the outfit with the second pair of boots too. And yes, you’ve educated Ralph well! 😀

Michelle, thanks so much! I like the pink boots because they match the sweatshirt better but the red ones really add something special…until I fall on my face from the 5 inch stilettos! Hahaha. I do hope I am teaching my children well!

Thanks so much, Joanne! I appreciate that! I wore the sweatshirt and hat with leggings for our Halloween night porch siting! Which was so fun, by the way! We had lines building up in front of our spooky house and it made my heart so happy. What a great night we had in my neighborhood!

Ralph is the best son you could wish for! What a thoughtful boy. I think you did grow a few centimetres when he said it didn’t you? I how you have a fabulous Halloween!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks, Nancy! Oh, if you really knew Ralph, you might change your mind about that! Haha. When he is sweet, he is ever so sweet. But when he is angry, the rage is intense. But he definitely earned major points with mom for that comment!

You put together the cutest eclectic outfits. There is something so sexy flattering about boots with shorts. I don’t know what it is, but even I feel sexy in that combination and i’m 62! That was always my go to outfit when I use to go see live music or concerts. And with tights you can do it year around really. Happy Halloween!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Aw, Joni, thanks so much! I have always loved wearing more unexpected combinations…like boots with shorts or socks with sandals or dresses over pants. There is definitely something sexy about shorts with any kind of thigh high style footwear (boots or tall socks) and I absolutely love that you continue to rock this style into your 60s! I plan on doing the same…for as long as my heart desires! I hope you had a magical Halloween!

HOLY COW! This is absolutely amazing, Shelbee! You win the lottery, the boat, the mansion, and the whole dang thang!!! How in the world did you happen to have these red boots (Kinky Boots vibes for sure)? And, Ralph is right…you definitely look like a teenager and an older sister in this! Love, love, love everything about it!!!

Aw, Marsha, you win the prize for best comment! This was really fun! I had so many ideas from this video, but that cat outfit was too cute to resist…especially since I had these crazy boots and a tiger sweatshirt! I am still laughing about Ralph’s comment! A teenager! Hahaha. I will take it!

Just love your interpretation of Taylor’s outfits! When that amazing child is going through teenage tantrums and driving you mad, try very hard to remember that he once said you looked like his big sister!!!

Ha. Thanks so much, Pamela! That is a perspective I will certainly keep in mind…I don’t have to wait for teenage tantrums eiher to remind myself of his sweetness…his 9 year old tantrums are enough to make me lose my patience! My child reminds me of the little girl in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem When She Was Good,
“There was a little girl, who had a little curl
Right in the middle of her forehead,
And when she was good, she was very, very good,
But when she was bad she was horrid.”
When my son is sweet, he is very, very sweet,
But when he is bad, he is so horrid!
I hope you are having a marvelous week, my friend!
