Songful Style Link Party #25 | “Girl On Fire” by Alicia Keys
Oh my goodness, why are the weeks and months flying by so quickly? Time really does speed up the older we get. I do not think I am a fan of this type of time warp. Yet somehow here we are at the end of March anyway and it’s time for another musical challenge with my fantastic friends Suzy and Marsha!
For this month’s challenge, Marsha chose “Girl On Fire” by Alicia Keys as our outfit inspiration. I shared details about the song and the artist as well as some photographic inspiration in this post. I love that these song lyrics were inspired by the struggle and beauty that is motherhood but has also become an anthem for all women who are rocking at the hard stuff. Sometimes it all feels like hard stuff so we should be celebrating every little success along the way, shouldn’t we?
The outfit I created to represent this song feels fit for a celebration of female empowerment, don’t you think? Let me tell you how it all came together.
Along with the lyric about this girl being on fire, I used the following outfits from the music video as additional sartorial inspiration.
Alicia’s two pencil skirt outfits led me to my gold sequined pencil skirt paired with a cropped black tee. I added a black corset belt for extra skin coverage because it is just way too cold outside for midriff baring. Her green satin dress, chartreuse satin top, and silk robe inspired me to add my green satin kimono robe.
Once I had all of the Alicia-inspired elements in place, I kept my accessories very much Shelbee-inspired with my red Panama hat and my gold floral cowgirl boots. I always feel like fire when I have boots on my feet and a hat on my head! I added my sparkly tights for some more fire and completed my outfit with my “peacock” necklace and these gorgeous Rainbow Aura Quartz Tassel Earrings I just picked up from Earthbound Trading Co. in Knoxville, Tennessee, on my recent road trip.
Despite feeling like fire in this shiny outfit, I quickly realized that I cannot wear this kimono with the sequined skirt. There are so many loose threads on the robe that kept getting stuck to the sequins which essentially made this exact outfit combination too impractical to ever wear again. Booo.
About Songful Style
Songful Style is an ageless style challenge series hosted by Suzy of The Grey Brunette, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle. For this series, each month we will share a song with the lyrics and video and we invite you to use whatever aspect of the song that inspires you to create an outfit.
It is similar to Style Imitating Art where we use artwork to inspire our outfit creations. Except Songful Style gives you lyrics, music, video, and album artwork to inspire your fashion creativity. You may even find inspiration in a memory triggered by the selected song. It is all open to your own personal interpretation and just a fun way to discover new music and get a little bit more creative with your wardrobe.
Anyone is welcome to join us on a permanent basis or you can just play along without any obligation to do anything other than feel inspired. We are flexible and fun and just want to find more ways to play dress up because it’s what we enjoy doing!
We will be posting on the last Monday of each month and will announce our song choice for the following month at the end of each post.
Please be sure to check out how my songful friends have styled their outfits inspired by “Girl On Fire”.

Shelbee, I love how your outfit came to be! You are a sartorial genius, my friend! The colours….O M G…the colours! I adore them! The kimono is absolutely gorgeous for this song choice but I can imagine that it must’ve got a bit irritating that it kept catching on the skirt! Those boots are to die for too. I love it all! It was such a fab song choice wasn’t it?!
Big hugs my friend,

Awww, Suzy! Thanks so much, my friend. I really love how this outfit turned out! If I ever have a place to go where I need some sparkles, I may have to wear this outfit but with a different kimono! It was a super fun song choice, for sure. Very empowering! I have had the song stuck in my head for weeks now. LOL

I think you captured the essence of this song, Shelbee! You are truly a girl on fire in all meanings of the phrase. It’s too bad the sequins misbehaved with your kimono. Love the Shelbee accessories, too! Everything just comes together perfectly!
