Songful Style Link Party #19 | “Heart of Glass” by Blondie
About Songful Style
Songful Style is an ageless style challenge series hosted by Suzy of The Grey Brunette, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle. For this series, each month we will share a song with the lyrics and video and we invite you to use whatever aspect of the song that inspires you to create an outfit.
It is similar to Style Imitating Art where we use artwork to inspire our outfit creations. Except Songful Style gives you lyrics, music, video, and album artwork to inspire your fashion creativity. You may even find inspiration in a memory triggered by the selected song. It is all open to your own personal interpretation and just a fun way to discover new music and get a little bit more creative with your wardrobe.
Anyone is welcome to join us on a permanent basis or you can just play along without any obligation to do anything other than feel inspired. We are flexible and fun and just want to find more ways to play dress up because it’s what we enjoy doing!
We will be posting on the last Monday of each month and will announce our song choice for the following month at the end of each post.
Marsha chose Blondie‘s 1979 disco tune “Heart of Glass” for August’s Songful Style inspiration and I must admit that I was completely stumped for styling ideas so I took the easy way out with my Blondie tee shirt.
I don’t have very much in my closet room that fits into the disco/new wave genre that Blondie so boldly represents. And I didn’t find much sartorial inspiration from the song itself. In fact, I really barely understand the song lyrics other than she loved someone and he turned out to be a jerk. I suppose it’s a typical American love song. Ha.
Anyway, I had a few garments in mind for creating an outfit to accurately represent the vibe of the song. First I tried this sparkly evening dress because it sort of reminds me of the dress Debbie Harry is wearing in the music video. I layered my Blondie tee over top and tied it at the waist and it looked absolutely atrocious! The sparkly dress really only works when worn alone and I already did that so I needed a new idea.
The next thing I had in mind was this sparkly silver tutu paired with my Blondie tee. The skirt is a smidge too big so when I tied the tee shirt at the waist, I ended up with a giant blob of fabric all gathered around my midsection. That also looked terrible.
I realized that this oversized tee shirt really was only going to work with something more slim fitting on the bottom so I opted for my faux leather leggings, added some fabulous sky high shiny pink sandals (probably the most disco-ish things I own), a sparkly clutch, beaded tassel earrings, and a delicate little pink heart of glass necklace (it’s more likely plastic but it has the appearance of pink glass).
It took me way longer than it should have to end up in an oversized tee shirt and leggings, but in the end I absolutely loved this outfit! I changed to cotton leggings after photos were taken because it is still a bit too warm for faux leather. Then I ditched my shoes and wore this outfit all day at home with my Furkenstocks. As magnificent as these pink shoes are, the heels are about 1/4″ higher than my comfort zone. My feet simply do not flex at this angle. These fabulous sandals are just too pretty to part with but they really do need a new owner with much younger and more flexible feet!
Do you ever let the music guide you through your closet? It really is a fun way to approach your wardrobe with a fresh new perspective. You can literally find style inspiration all around you if you pay attention!
Be sure to go check out how Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” has inspired my songfully stylish friends.

Shelbee, if I had a Blondie tee, I’d have worn it too! Sadly, I didn’t and I was really stumped too lol. But I found something in the end, and even though it’s inspired by the song, you would never know…it’s not disco at all lol! Yours though, is absolutely gorgeous! You look stunning in this ensemble. The shoes are gorgeous but I can understand why you changed into your furkenstocks lol!!
I’m excited to see how we all style the next song now!
Big hugs

Thanks, Suzy! Blondie tee for the win! Haha. I am looking forward to seeing what you and Marsha came up with for this one. I’ll be around in a bit to check it out. This was a challenging song but super fun! I am excited for the next round as well.

This was a tough one, wasn’t it? Sorry about that! I’m going to have to work harder at coming up with a song that’s more open to interpretation!
That being said, you look amazing in this outfit! Your hair is so good all long and flowy! Love the Blondie tee, too!

Thanks, Marsha! Oh, it wasn’t that tough. I like the difficult style challenges anyway. This one took me out of my normal bohemian aesthetic which seems to be garnering a lot of attention and compliments on social media. LOL

A perfect combo! You had to wear that tee and the faux leather leggings and sandals are perfect! I have a couple of shoes that I barely wear because of the high heel but they come in hand for pictures and a couple occasions.

Thanks so much, Mireille! I really do need to get rid of some footwear though. I have way too much! But they are fun to have around for playing dress up and photoshoots.
