Songful Style Link Party #18 | “Freak Flag” by Here Come the Mummies

About Songful Style

Songful Style is an ageless style challenge series hosted by Suzy of The Grey Brunette, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle. For this series, each month we will share a song with the lyrics and video and we invite you to use whatever aspect of the song that inspires you to create an outfit.

It is similar to Style Imitating Art where we use artwork to inspire our outfit creations. Except Songful Style gives you lyrics, music, video, and album artwork to inspire your fashion creativity. You may even find inspiration in a memory triggered by the selected song. It is all open to your own personal interpretation and just a fun way to discover new music and get a little bit more creative with your wardrobe.

Anyone is welcome to join us on a permanent basis or you can just play along without any obligation to do anything other than feel inspired. We are flexible and fun and just want to find more ways to play dress up because it’s what we enjoy doing!

We will be posting on the last Monday of each month and will announce our song choice for the following month at the end of each post.

For July’s song, I have chosen “Freak Flag” by Here Come the Mummies, an American funk rock band from Nashville, Tennesee, known best for their energetic live performances and anonymous band members who dress in mummy costumes. I was first introduced to this band 3 1/2 years ago when I embarked on my very first LSD trip with a dear trusted friend. We were scrolling through YouTube looking for a concert to watch when we stumbled upon Here Come the Mummies and our minds were significantly blown. At first, I thought maybe the acid was making this strange musical group really fascinating, but I have since watched many of their live shows on YouTube without LSD and they are still really freaking fascinating.

While mummy costumes to conceal your identities is a bit strange, it really works in the most intriguing way. Probably because they are such an amazing group of musicians whose talent cannot be denied or diminished by their odd choice of dress and creative personas.

I have been stalking this band’s tour schedule since the first time I watched them so I am super excited to share that Jeff and I just bought tickets to see Here Come the Mummies at Salvage Station in Asheville, North Carolina, on October 15, 2023. It will be our first trip away without kids since our honeymoon, too, making it an extra special event. I am really looking forward to this upcoming road trip! You can read more about the band and the song in my post here.

When it came time to style an outfit inspired by the song “Freak Flag”, I knew straight away that I wanted to create an outfit with my newly upcycled tie dye and floral robe made from two ugly dresses. The robe itself is acting as my own personal freak flag that I can proudly fly!

With it, I wore my multicolored striped sundress which I cinched with the matching fabric belt I made for the robe. Then I added my tie dye ankle boots which I coordinated with blue and green necklaces. I also wore my colorful tagua nut earrings from Big Earrings. My new bright pink straw fedora topped off my look. I used the fabric belt to this pair of black floral pants as my hat band. I rarely ever wear the matching fabric belts that come with dresses and trousers, but I save them all because they are the perfect width and length for hat bands.

When I walked out of the house to take these photos, I was a little unsure about the extreme quantity of freak in this outfit. But after looking at the photos, I really kind of love this crazy look. And being one who has never shied away from letting my freak fly, I think I have reached a point in my life when I want it to fly even higher and even brighter than ever before.

Depending on the weather in Asheville on October 15, I might just wear this exact outfit to see Here Come the Mummies perform live. I think I have definitely created a look that would make those ancient mummies (and Iris Apfel) proud!

You know, it is okay to be sad, but Here Come the Mummies are all about the fun. And how could I possibly feel sad in this extraordinarily cheerful outfit?!

Be sure to go see what my songfully stylish friends have worn for this freaky tune!

Shelbee…….I FREAKING LOVE IT!!! All that colour and print together is utter perfection, especially for this song, and to me it just screams Shelbee! Absolutely fabulous, my friend!
And I also LOVE that you’re thinking about wearing this exact outfit to the concert in a few months time. You’ll be the star in the audience, for sure!! I wish I was going too. It’ll be so much fun!!

Eeek! Thanks so much, Suzy! I loved this outfit so much, too! Jeff suggested I wear it to the show, but it is an outdoor venue at night in the fall so it might be too cold. I think I will definitely wear the crazy upcycled robe though! But over leggings and a sweater maybe. This was such a fun song to style and I am so glad that everyone enjoyed my freaky pick!

Gahhhhh, thanks so much, Marsha! It might be one of my favorite outfits ever, too! All the colors and crazy prints really make my soul happy. Just because you didn’t fly your freak flag for this one doesn’t mean you can’t still fly it in future posts! Hehehe. Go for it, my friend, show me your freakiest of freak flag outfits, please!

      xoxo
