Songful Style Link Party #17 | “What’s Love Got to Do with It” by Tina Turner
About Songful Style
Songful Style is an ageless style challenge series hosted by Suzy of The Grey Brunette, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle. For this series, each month we will share a song with the lyrics and video and we invite you to use whatever aspect of the song that inspires you to create an outfit.
It is similar to Style Imitating Art where we use artwork to inspire our outfit creations. Except Songful Style gives you lyrics, music, video, and album artwork to inspire your fashion creativity. You may even find inspiration in a memory triggered by the selected song. It is all open to your own personal interpretation and just a fun way to discover new music and get a little bit more creative with your wardrobe.
Anyone is welcome to join us on a permanent basis or you can just play along without any obligation to do anything other than feel inspired. We are flexible and fun and just want to find more ways to play dress up because it’s what we enjoy doing!
We will be posting on the last Monday of each month and will announce our song choice for the following month at the end of each post.
To honor the recently departed Tina Turner, Suzy chose this month’s song which was the biggest selling single of her career, “What’s Love Got to Do with It”. You can find more information about the song in my post here including the lyrics, the official music video and some covers, the history of the song, biographical information about the artist, and a selection of images to inspire your style.
Be sure to check out my songful friends to see how they have paid tribute to Tina Turner.

After doing all of my sartorial research to inspire an outfit that is worthy of the great Tina Turner, I realized that I simply cannot match her extraordinary sense of style. She has showcased some of the most magnificent outfits and costumes during her long career and they all were so uniquely her that it might be kind of blasphemous for anyone else to try to replicate it.
But the outfit she wore in the music video for this song has become so iconic that I would bet most women have all of the essential pieces in their wardrobes. All you really need is a black top, a short black skirt, black stockings, black heels, and a denim jacket. Jazz it up with some sparkly jewels and maybe tease your hair a little taller and you’ve got the look. And since I have nothing else that is Tina-worthy and I dare not try anyway, I took this easy straightforward approach.
This outfit is so iconic, in fact, that it is the one Mattel put on the Tina Turner Barbie.
You may notice that my top is not black. I noticed in similar iterations of this look that Ms. Turner has worn that her top appears to be a black corset. I have lots of black tops that would have worked just fine, but I really liked the sassiness of the corset and purple is what I’ve got.
I paired it with a thrifted faux leather skirt and preloved denim jacket. I wore black stockings with a back seam and pretty design because Tina didn’t ever wear just plain old boring solid stockings. And as much as I dislike plain old boring black shoes, I opted for plain old boring black heels. I was going to wear traditional black pumps like Tina’s but I just couldn’t be that boring so I chose black platform heels with a bit of a strappy detail.
Staying in tune with my purple theme, I grabbed all of my brooches that had purples and blues and pinned them on my denim jacket. Then I added some big sparkly costume earrings and necklace and put my hair in a high ponytail with a big velvet scrunchie, 80’s style.
This was fun to style but it is really not my style. It obviously must have been my style at some point though since I had all the things to create the style.
One thing I did realize after wearing this outfit is that I might be at the end of my high heel days. My feet don’t really like them anymore and I don’t really like them anymore. But I do still enjoy a good game of playing dress up with my friends! So until I need the space for something else or I move, I’ll keep my closet playroom filled with all the things.
Farewell, Ms. Tina, you have been an inspiration to all.

Hi Shelbee, lovely outfit and if anyone could carry off a Tina Turner outfit it would have been you! She had an amazing figure and looked stunning in all her short, sparkly dresses. What a fun post hun. Have a super week. Jacqui x

We both went the same route, but I give top honors to you! Won’t it be fun if Suzy did the same? I love your bustier and think it’s definitely Tina-inspired! Those stockings are fabulous with the design on the back! I need to invest in some more fun stockings! I agree that high heels are just not a part of my life anymore…not that truly high ones ever were!

Thanks, Marsha! I had a feeling we were all going to go for this iconic look of Tina’s! It was the easiest to recreate and all of her other outfits are so extraordinary, how could we possibly do justice for any of them? I do love fun stockings and tights, but like high heels, I think I am outgrowing that discomfort, too. Haha.

I love that you have all this fabulous stuff in your closet to play with, Shelbee! If I had a big enough wardrobe, I would have kept so much more over the years but my wardrobe has never been that big…until next year when we have our proper walk in wardrobe YAY!!
If it had been cool enough over here, I might have worn a pair of stockings too but it’s just too damn hot right now!! I wore a black dress because that’s what I thought Tina had worn…I was so wrong lol! Oh well!
Big hugs to you, Shelbee.

Thanks so much, Suzy! I am definitely blessed and very grateful for my closet space. You are going to love your walk-in wardrobe, for sure. I am very excited for you! Marsha also wore a black dress which I think worked perfectly for recreating Tina’s look. This was a fun challenge and I am really glad that you chose to honor Ms. Tina!
