Songful Style Link Party 12 | “Tell Me Baby” by Red Hot Chili Peppers
About Songful Style
Songful Style is an ageless style challenge series hosted by Suzy of The Grey Brunette, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, Marsha of Marsha in the Middle, and Michelle of Funky Fashion Style.
Each month we will share a song with the lyrics and video and we invite you to use whatever aspect of the song that inspires you to create an outfit.
It is similar to Style Imitating Art where we use artwork to inspire our outfit creations. Except Songful Style gives you lyrics, music, video, and album artwork to inspire your fashion creativity. You may even find inspiration in a memory triggered by the selected song. It is all open to your own personal interpretation and just a fun way to discover new music and get a little bit more creative with your wardrobe.
Anyone is welcome to join us on a permanent basis or you can just play along without any obligation to do anything other than feel inspired. We are flexible and fun and just want to find more ways to play dress up because it’s what we enjoy doing!
We will be posting on the last Monday of each month and will announce our song choice for the following month at the end of each post.
This month’s song, “Tell Me Baby” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, was chosen by Michelle. You can find the lyrics, the video, some still frame screenshots from the video, and the history of the song and band in my post here.
Without further delay, check out my crazy sartorial interpretation of the song. Keep in mind, it is no wilder than my Songful Style companions who all really upped the creative styling game on this one! Be sure to click on their links below to see their style interpretations of “Tell Me Baby”.

So how does this insanely unique and probably really weird outfit relate to the song inspiration? Well, I started with this screenshot from the video because the green in both outfits really caught my eye and it is one of my favorite shades of green, too.
I suppose I mostly focused on the girl’s outfit with her black and white stripes and brilliant pops of Kelly green. But I kept the guy’s outfit in mind as a backup because, well, his legs look a lot warmer than hers for my current weather situation. And if all my other styling ideas failed, I was falling back on some ripped denim and Converse with my green shirt.
But as you can see, I did not need to rely on my handy old jeans because I found these handy old black and white striped knit tights instead. I have had these things for years and they actually are too short so I cut the feet off so I could pull them up to where they belong. My black biker shorts served dual purposes. Primarily, they mimic the girl’s biker shorts (I don’t have green ones but now I kind of wish I did). Secondarily, they helped to hold the tights up because the crotch kept drooping!
As much as I would have loved to wear some super cute green heels like the girl in the video, I had to be wary of the weather so I went with my black tanker boots but added green socks to more properly represent her footwear. The different black and white stripes on her socks and tube top inspired me to add various black and white stripes and plaid to my outfit. And then we headed out to the snow covered stage in a local park so I could act like a goof in front of the camera.
I don’t know if I would actually wear this outfit for real life activities though. Mostly because it just wasn’t all that comfortable. I think it’s the ill-fitting tights which I should probably just ditch. But they are super fun, aren’t they? Maybe I ditch them and buy myself a pair in the correct size. Now that’s one hell of a brilliant concept, isn’t it?!
Anyway, weird as I am in this songfully loud outfit, I think it matches the music inspiration visually and it definitely reverberates with hints of 1990s to early 2000s fashion.

If you would like to join us for next month’s Songful Style challenge, we will be hosting a link party on February 27, 2023, featuring our outfits inspired by Suzy’s song choice, “Love at First Sight” by Kylie Minogue. What a great song choice for February, the month when we celebrate all things love! I will share more details about this song later in the month to help inspire your next outfit creation. Happy styling!

Shelbee….OMG I can’t tell you how much I ADORE your outfit!!! Clearly, the green has a lot to do with my adoration lol, but the whole thing is just super cool! And yes you totally need to ditch those tights and get some that fit properly so you can wear them again and again and be comfortable! I always love your absolute joie de vivre in your photos…you always make me feel so joyful!!
Huge hugs, my friend

Awww, Suzy, my friend, thank you so much! Your comment just brought me so much joy in return! I have a huge bin filled with tights and every time I attempt to clean it out I get overwhelmed and quit. But I probably only wear about 10% of the tights in that bin because they are either ill fitting or just plain uncomfortable for various other reasons. Gosh, I need to just start doing these things or they will never get done! This was a really fun song challenge and I love all the outfits!

Haha
Love the rocker poses.
You are missing an essential rocking-at-home prop — a hairbrush!

Ha. Thanks so much, Anne! I thought of that but not until after we got there! I should have grabbed the flashlight out of my car for a microphone but even that was too far once I thought of it. So I really faked it with an invisible microphone!

Oh, Shelbee…you nailed it with this one! I mean, come on!!!! This look is perfect from the exact (at least to me) shade of green to the striped tights! I love it! This was a bit of a challenge, but, in the end, it was a lot of fun!

Thank you so much, Marsha! I do believe that you nailed this challenge better than I did though. You went with Flea and I absolutely admire that man’s nerve! This was super fun! I am excited to see what you all come up with for Kylie Minogue!

I love this outfit! Bright green and black make a wonderful combination. And the striped tights are amazing. (Yes, get a new pair!) Your outfit is way better than the one from which you took your inspiration. Fabulous!

Aw, thanks so much, Michelle! I thought the inspiration outfit was pretty cool and I would have style something just as sassy had it been warmer out! But this look is way more me anyway so I suppose it is better I live in a perpetual winter wonderland!
