About Songful Style
Songful Style is a new ageless style challenge series hosted by Suzy of The Grey Brunette, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle.
Each month we will share a song with the lyrics and video and we invite you to use whatever aspect of the song that inspires you to create an outfit.
It is similar to Style Imitating Art where we use artwork to inspire our outfit creations. Except Songful Style gives you lyrics, music, video, and album artwork to inspire your fashion creativity. You may even find inspiration in a memory triggered by the selected song. It is all open to your own personal interpretation and just a fun way to discover new music and get a little bit more creative with your wardrobe.
Anyone is welcome to join us on a permanent basis or you can just play along without any obligation to do anything other than feel inspired. We are flexible and fun and just want to find more ways to play dress up because it’s what we enjoy doing!
We will be posting on the last Monday of each month and will announce our song choice for the following month at the end of each post.
Be sure to check out my fabulous friends and how they have interpreted this song into style…just click their blog links for more songful style inspiration!

After I decided to use this song as inspiration, I have to admit that I was quite thoroughly stumped! There are no sartorial references made in the lyrics and I wasn’t feeling much like dressing like a Chipmunk so I leaned into the whole idea of a witch doctor.
But then I wasn’t sure exactly how a witch doctor would dress. Heck, I wasn’t even really sure what a witch doctor does. So I headed to Wikipedia to find out.
If you thought a witch doctor practices magic and other witchy things, then you are as wrong as I was. Witch doctors are actually healers who treat ailments that were supposedly caused by witchcraft. So a witch doctor is essentially anti-witchcraft. Witch doctors historically are considered practitioners of traditional, indigenous, or folk medicine which varies only slightly from healers who utilize alternative treatments such as naturopathy, homeopathy, Ayurveda, chiropractic, faith healing, and of course, my favorite, Reiki.
Once I made the connection between witch doctors and energy healers, creating a “witch doctor” outfit was super easy…I just had to dress like myself!
I went with my favorite cold weather outfit formula of black leggings and a tunic under a fabulous kimono and then I started adding all the magical, witchy, and healing accessories I could layer on including my black floppy hat, two long scarves, chunky black combat boots, a neck mess of crystal necklaces, and my red phoenix earrings. Phoenixes represent rebirth and resurrection so these seemed like the perfect earrings for this outfit. I also added a black lace shirt extender to cover up that front wedgie (“twedgie”) that sometimes happens in leggings. Lace extenders are the perfect twedgie solution!
For my outerwear, I thought my granny square cardigan would be perfect because I always go back to old wives’ tales and their home remedies for many little ailments long before I will seek the assistance of conventional medicine. I suppose some folks might consider this all to be witchcraft in a sense. To those people, I simply say, “Ooh ee ooh ah ah ting tang walla walla bing bang!”
How did I do? How would you interpret this song into style?
If you would like to join us for next month’s Songful Style challenge, we will be hosting a link party on December 26, 2022, featuring our outfits inspired by Marsha’s song choice, “Here to Forever” by Death Cab for Cutie. I will share more details about this song later in the month to help inspire your next outfit creation. Happy styling!

Oh my goodness, Jennifer, half of it has already melted! I think we got a total of 53 inches the weekend before Thanksgiving. The kids ended up with a 10 day Thanksgiving break because of it!

They really thought hard about the text! Lol. I wouldn’t have a idea how to interpretate this one but leave it up to you and it all comes together!

Hahaha. Thanks so much, Nancy! I wonder how he did come up with such nonsensical lyrics!

Ha! I had no idea that a witch doctor was “anti-witchcraft.” Very cool! And of course I love this outfit. I truly enjoy your style. I had intended to participate this month, but the time slipped away. It’s been a bit crazy.

P.S. I started this comment, got interrupted, and it disappeared. I don’t know if I accidentally posted it or accidentally deleted it. 🤨

Aw, thanks so much, Michelle! I always thought witch doctors did the witchcraft not safeguard people from it! The things we learn from fashion blogs! Hahaha. Things have been crazy around here, too. It seems I only get dressed for style challenges these days. I hope you are having a great start to the week!

I absolutely love that you realised all you had to do was dress like yourself, Shelbee! And you totally nailed it, of course! That cardigan is like the cherry on top of the cake. I adore it! You made me laugh when you said you didn’t really want to dress like a chipmunk because that’s exactly where I went LOL. Not in a literal animal sense of course, but the cartoon character!!! LOL
Huge hugs

Thanks so much, Suzy! I cracked up when I saw had you dressed like a Chipmunk after I wrote my post! You look so darn cute in your Alvin-inspired outfit! Perhaps if I owned a cute colorful hoodie like that I may have been more inclined to go all chipmunk with you! Haha.

It’s so fun to read about each person’s thought process and see what outfits they come up with! I love all these layers… and just added a lace extender to my Amazon cart. I’ve been wanting one for years and never think to actually buy it!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Oh my gosh, Joanne, I really enjoy reading the thought processes behind these outfits, too. I thought maybe it was silly to share all the step by step details of how an outfit comes to be so I am really happy to learn that others find that information interesting as well. Thanks so much for sharing this comment! And you are going to love your lace extender! I have a black one and a white one and they really come in handy.

Shelbee, I love your take on this! All of your witchy layers make for a perfect witch doctor!! I think my image of a witch doctor came from Gilligan’s Island or some other goofy show. It’s interesting to find out they are completely different from what we thought, right? I just found a pattern for a granny square cardigan (actually, Daenel found it). I think I’m going to give it a try as soon as I finish about a million other UFOs (UnFinished Objects)!

Marsha, thanks so much! Yeah, I definitely did not envision myself as a witch doctor…until I read what they actually do. And now I am really excited to see your granny square cardigan project…in both its UFO state as well as it FO state! Haha.
