Songful Style | “Hello, Goodbye” by The Beatles & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up #272
It is Marsha’s turn to choose the song to inspire our style for May. Being a longtime Beatles fan, she wanted her first song choice to be one of their classics and so she picked “Hello, Goodbye”. Continue reading for ways to find style inspiration in this song.
About Songful Style
Songful Style is a new ageless style challenge series hosted by Suzy of The Grey Brunette, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, Michelle of My Bijou Life, Marsha of Marsha in the Middle, and Anne of Spy Girl.
Each month we will share a song with the lyrics and video and we invite you to use whatever aspect of the song that inspires you to create an outfit.
It is similar to Style Imitating Art where we use artwork to inspire our outfit creations. Except Songful Style gives you lyrics, music, video, and album artwork to inspire your fashion creativity. You may even find inspiration in a memory triggered by the selected song. It is all open to your own personal interpretation and just a fun way to discover new music and get a little bit more creative with your wardrobe.
Anyone is welcome to join us on a permanent basis or you can just play along without any obligation to do anything other than feel inspired. We are flexible and fun and just want to find more ways to play dress up because it’s what we enjoy doing!
We will be posting on the last Monday of each month and will announce our song choice for the following month at the end of each post.

About the Song
“Hello, Goodbye” was recorded by the Beatles in the fall of 1967 and released on November 24 for the Christmas season. It was the first release since the death of the band’s manager Brian Epstein and was commercially successful worldwide.
Although writing is credited to Lennon-McCarthy, the song was written entirely by Paul McCartney as a result of Beatles’ aide Alistair Taylor inquiring about McCartney’s songwriting process. McCartney sat down at his harmonium and began playing a word game with Taylor, asking him to say the opposite of whatever Paul said. As they sat calling out opposite words to each other, according to author Steve Turner, the song was born…”And so it went – black and white, yes and no, stop and go, hello and goodbye.”
After the release of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band in April of 1967, the Beatles began embracing randomness and simplicity as a major part of their creative process and this song is a example of that.
But what does the song mean?
According to Paul McCartney, “the answer to everything is simple. It’s a song about everything and nothing…If you have black, you have to have white. That’s the amazing thing about life.” He also said the lyrics reflect his astrological sign of Gemini by addressing a more positive side duality in nature. “It’s such a deep theme in the universe, duality – man woman, black white, ebony ivory, high low, right wrong, up down, hello goodbye – that it was a very easy song to write.”
There is so much information written about the composition and history of this song that I am going to refer you to Wikipedia for further information if you are interested.

Interesting song choice! I was just printing out some Beatles music for my guitar student. Great song, and I had a few Beatles albums back in the day, what happened to it is a mystery! I love that this idea gets the creativity juices flowing and will have to think!. I like the explaination- the duality.
Have a great day

Hi Dee! Thanks for popping in! Oooh, I love your creative writing prompts and I have not yet made it a priority to join. I have been so overwhelmed with life in general lately that I am barely staying on top of blogging. So the writing prompt is the third Wednesday of each month? I don’t know if I will be able to get on board for the April one, but I am putting it on my calendar to check for the next prompt! I hope you are having a wonderful week!

I saw the perfect thing online which should be available in my local mall so I may go check it out and try it on this week!

You know from my blog name, “Scribbling Boomer,” that you’re right in my wheelhouse when you start talking about the Beatles. I was 14 years old when they first came to the U. S. and appeared on the Ed Sullivan show. I had many Beatles albums in the 60’s and 70’s. Years later, in the 1980s-90s, my teenage sons absconded with my Beatles LPs (albums) — a new generation of Beatles fans. I’m looking forward to your fashion interpretations of “Hello Goodbye.”
Thanks for hosting the link-up.

Oh Carol, thank you for sharing this lovely comment! My mother was a huge Beatles fan and she passed that love down to me as well. She used to share a story about how one of her friends won tickets to see the Beatles and invited her to go. My mother was a senior in high school and her fiancé was in Vietnam. My grandfather refused to let my mother go because he didn’t think it was right for her to be off ogling after some British boy band while her fiancé was fighting a war in a foreign land! She didn’t go, sadly her fiancé never made it back home, and she remained bitter at my grandfather about it for the rest of her life. For real! On a happier note, I went thrifting this week and found the perfect thing for this song prompt!
