SIA Gallery of Style | The White Rabbit by John Tenniel
I am really excited to share this week’s style gallery because we have a new participant. I do love when new people join our Style Imitating Art challenges!
About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as curator, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the curator by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the curator will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join! You are invited to share your images on Instagram or other social media platforms. Just be sure to tag Salazar, Shelbee, and Marsha on Instagram or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!
The Artwork
The White Rabbit by John Tenniel

The Gallery of Style
The submissions are in no particular order. If you have submitted a photo and I did not include it, please let me know and I will make the necessary edits. Sometimes emails get lost in the shuffle. You can read more details about each outfit by clicking on the individual blog links or the images in this post.
Sally of Within a World of My Own
First up is Sally since I chose this artwork with her in mind. Sally said this about her vibrant red outfit inspired by the White Rabbit…
“Since I don’t own any blazers or waistcoats for a more literal interpretation of the White Rabbit in his above-ground Victorian clothing, my version is a whimsical take on menswear. My red plaid pants represent the plaid blazer, and I added a red wool cardigan for my topper (though it does have a bit of a Mr. Rogers vibe, I’m OK with that; surely the White Rabbit dresses down when he’s at home in his little cottage). I buttoned my white shirt all the way up and turned up the collar, then wound an Alice in Wonderland scarf featuring the Tenniel artwork around the collar and fastened it with a magnet clasp to create a White Rabbit cravat. I finished it off with a variety of White Rabbit themed jewelry, including DIY hoop earrings with White Rabbit charms (in his court regalia), an Alice charm bracelet from my mom with a White Rabbit charm, and the White Rabbit pocket watch pendant Robert [is] holding [below].”
Robert (aka “Mr. in St. Paul”) of Within a World of My Own
Next up is our newest Style Imitating Art participant, Sally’s husband Robert! How fun that he joined us for this one with not just one outfit, but two White Rabbit inspired looks and the perfect pose! Robert, thanks so much for playing along! Sally said this about Robert’s styling…
“Robert created two versions of the outfit, one for each of the colorways of the artwork. Tan pants, green shirt, and brown shoes are the foundation of the look. For the tan version, he added a tan jacket with a dark collar that mimics the White Rabbit’s cravat/ascot. For the red version, he added a maroon hoodie with dark grey fleece lining the hood, which harkens back to the Rabbit’s soft fur. He’s inspecting a pocket watch pendant of mine that features the same White Rabbit drawing that is the inspiration artwork (red version) for the challenge. Little known “fact” about the Tenniel artwork: the pocket watch the White Rabbit is holding also features this drawing, so it creates an infinite regression of White Rabbits with pocket watches looking at White Rabbits with pocket watches.”
Marsha of Marsha in the Middle
Marsha is continuing her “Daenelization” with this beautiful reversible silk skirt made from saris that she received as a “hand-me-down”. The print and color palette on the skirt side showing creates an effective mimicking of the White Rabbit’s blazer. She paired this gorgeous skirt with a denim shirt as a nod to the White Rabbit’s blue ascot. (I interpreted his ascot as black, but those different perspectives are the kind of things that make these art challenges so much fun!)
Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey
While some of us may have struggled a bit with this challenge (that would be Marsha and me), Salazar was not challenged in the least! She said this outfit came together effortlessly with her beautiful plaid blazer, tan waistcoat, rabbit brooch, and white fleece-lined trousers (the white fleeciness is her nod to the White Rabbit). As much as I love this outfit, it is Salazar’s amazing boots that have really captured my attention!
And Me…Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge
Despite my challenges, I love this cowgirl look that was inspired by the White Rabbit art. I wore white denim to represent the rabbit’s white fur, my yellow corduroy blazer is the same color as his waistcoat while my neckerchief mimics the color palette and plaid pattern in his blazer. I wore a black and white plaid tunic because I perceived the White Rabbit’s ascot as being black and white paid. I chose accessories in the same neutral color palette to create a cohesive Western style outfit that pleased me very much!
This was so much fun! I hope you all have enjoyed this round of Style Imitating Art as much as I have. If you would like to try one of these style challenges, be sure to stop back on Monday, March 31, 2025, for Salazar’s choice of the next art inspiration. It is a really fascinating choice for the next round!
Keeping it on the edge,
Shelbee

Marsha Banks
Yay for Robert joining us! I wonder whose idea it was. Everyone came up with a different idea, but that’s the glory of SIA! I love Sally’s ascot and the comment about the watch. I didn’t know that!
