SIA Gallery of Style | “Taking in the Laundry” by Grandma Moses
It is gallery time, y’all! These are some of my favorite posts to create where we see all the fabulous and fun styles that have been inspired by the artwork. Thanks so much to everyone who joined us this week!
About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of MeadowTree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as curator, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the curator by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the curator will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join! You are invited to share your images on Instagram or other social media platforms. Just be sure to tag Salazar, Terri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!
The Inspiration Artwork

The Gallery of Style
These are in no particular order, but if you have submitted a photo and it is not included, please let me know and I will make the necessary edits. Sometimes emails get lost in the shuffle.
Reni of Reni’s Odds and Sods
Reni chose a beautiful floral dress to represent the colors and textures in the background of the painting and her white gilet reflects the laundry drying in the breeze. I love this interpretation especially because Reni is the only participant who didn’t rely on blues for her outfit!
Sally of Within a World of My Own
Sally chose a mix of blue tones to represent the sky and an amazing print skirt that really reflects the shapes and colors of the laundry and the figures in the painting. She added a striped top for good measure because as Sally says, “Well, stripes!” What a great outfit, especially this really awesome skirt!
Marsha of Marsha in the Middle
Marsha admits to struggling a bit with this challenge so she let the memories and emotions triggered by the painting guide her. She chose a gorgeous April Cornell dress that she can envision her Grandma Luderman wearing back in the day and then she added brown mid-calf boots because housewives didn’t wear fancy footwear when they were working on the farm! Such a pretty look and very reminiscent of days of yore.
Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey
Salazar wore a charming blue plaid dress because it has the simple, homey feel of the painting and incorporates some of the colors as well. She brilliantly added her “cottage” necklace as a nod to the homes in the painting. I love every little detail including the plaid print, Salazar’s pretty brogues, and her perfect cottage necklace!
Terri of MeadowTree Style
Terri knew immediately that she wanted to wear something white because hanging the laundry outside to dry is one of the best ways to brighten your whites. So she combined cute casual white cropped trousers with a beautiful blue dotted top that is reflective of the sky. And a magnificent sun hat completes Terri’s lovely laundry day look!
And Me!
I chose a blue tie dye dress because it reminded me of the partly cloudy skies that are perfect for laundry day. Then I created my new “Meg” wrap from two really old sarongs and it reminded me of laundry hanging on the line so I topped my dress with my new wrap and added a wide brimmed hat to keep the sun out of my eyes. You can read more about Meg and how my wrap came to be made here.
Thanks again to everyone who joined us for this week’s round of Style Imitating Art! You can read more details about each outfit by clicking on the individual blog links or the images in this post.
I hope y’all have enjoyed what we have created! If you would like to try one of these art-inspired style challenges, be sure to stop back on Monday, June 12, 2023, for the next art inspiration. It is Salazar’s turn to choose!

Sally in St Paul
I love this collection of outfits and the diverse thoughts people brought to interpreting it (color scheme, shapes, memories or feelings invoked by the work, etc.). There is just SO MUCH in this painting that we have merely scratched the surface of style possibilities.

It’s interesting to me how many of the participants chose blue. And nearly everyone managed to capture a homespun look. As usual it was fun to see how everyone interpreted the artwork. Good job, everyone!

Thanks, Michelle! I found it interesting as well that we all went with blue. There really isn’t much blue in the painting but the image clearly evoked blue to all of us! This was super fun and I love all the interpretations!
