SIA Gallery of Style | Mask Still Life III (1911) by Emil Nolde
It’s time! It’s time! My favorite part of the whole Style Imitating series…The Gallery of Style!
About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as curator, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the curator by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the curator will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join! You are invited to share your images on Instagram or other social media platforms. Just be sure to tag Salazar, Shelbee, and Marsha on Instagram or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!

The Gallery of Style
The submissions are in no particular order. If you have submitted a photo and I did not include it, please let me know and I will make the necessary edits. Sometimes emails get lost in the shuffle. You can read more details about each outfit by clicking on the individual blog links or the images in this post.
Terri of MeadowTree Style
Our former co-host Terri was inspired to join us for this round mainly because the painting is owned by the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, where she has personally viewed it many times. It is a strong work of German Expressionism that Terri used during her career as an art teacher. She shared a pre-COVID photo of her family’s Halloween parties, where she is donning her Halloween fascinator and apron.
Sally of Within a World of My Own
Sally started with a scarf that has a painted-look print in the colors of the artwork. She reflected the angularity of the masks in some of the details of her outfit: plaid pants, tweed shoes, a wavy textured top, triangular beads on the DIY earrings, a rectangular card charm on the DIY bracelet, and triangular drops on her “tooth/claw” necklace which fit well with the toothy grins on some of the masks). Sally ended up creating a richly colored, beautifully print mixed, gorgeous outfit that is true to her style.
Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey
Not having anything to match the creepiness of the masks in the painting, Salazar relied on a color-blocked outfit to reflect some of the painting’s graphic qualities. She completed this beautiful combination with her adorable scarecrow brooch for a Halloween touch.
Marsha of Marsha in the Middle
Marshas interpretation was a brilliant act of rebellion. Instead of building her outfit around the colors and dark emotions of the painting, she took a pro-Israel stance against this anti-semitic artist and wore a gorgeous pattern mix of blues and whites.
And Me!
I wore my very first Frankendress layered under a black cardigan all covered in white skulls. The colorful stripes in the dress capture the bold shades in the painting while the skulls represent the masks.
I hope you have enjoyed this round of Style Imitating Art. If you would like to try one of these style challenges, be sure to stop back on Monday, November 11, 2024, for our next art inspiration. It is Salazar’s turn to choose the art.
Keeping it on the edge,
Shelbee
