SIA Gallery of Style | “Frida Kahlo and Her Pet Deer Granizo” by Katherine Quinn

Since I am the curator of this week’s art inspiration, here is my Gallery of Style, a round up of all the lovely people who played along for this challenge.

About Style Imitating Art

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle and it challenges us to draw fashion inspiration from works of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as curator, selects an inspiration artwork that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the curator by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the curator will share all of the submissions on her blog.

Remember, you don’t have to be a blogger to join. You are invited to share your images on Instagram or other social media platforms. Just be sure to tag SalazarShelbee, and Marsha on Instagram so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join one of our SIA challenges!

The submissions are in no particular order. If you have submitted a photo and I did not include it, please let me know and I will make the necessary edits. Sometimes emails get lost in the shuffle. That being said, we would love to see more participants join us for our fun style challenges. Anyone is welcome to play along. Just watch for our Monday posts when we share the artwork, style an outfit inspired by it, and email it to one of the co-hosts to be featured in our gallery posts. We encourage you to invite your friends, too!

You can read more details about each outfit by clicking on the individual blog links or the images in this post.

Suzy of Suzy Turner, The Grey Brunette

With a focus on the spirit and color palette of the illustration, Suzy created a beautifully whimsical outfit with a dark blue dress and a colorful crocheted cardigan. She added other details from the artwork like her pretty beaded necklace and a red flowers in her hair. And how darn cute is her owl?!

Sally of Within a World of My Own

Sally enjoyed “interpreting this colorful and whimsical illustration into an outfit with coral and green colors, a fuzzy sweater, floral prints, animal prints and animal figures, beads, and – of course – a strong brow line!” Well done, Sally!

Marsha of Marsha in the Middle

Marsha focused primarily on the colors of the illustration with a gorgeous gold corduroy duster which captures the color and the texture of Frida’s top. To represent Frida’s dress, Marsha created a column of blue with an embroidered tee shirt and jeans. Instead a floral crown, she included a floral scarf as her belt. Check out her gorgeous necklace, too!

Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey

Salazar knew right away that she would wear this amazing green embroidered tunic which she paired with green corduroy pants to capture all the green in the illustration. Her cognac boots are for the touch of yellow/brown in the artwork. Surprisingly, Salazar did not have a deer brooch, so she added her ladybird brooch as both a nod to the dots on the deer and the butterflies/moths. I love this outfit!

Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge

I tried to copy Frida’s outfit with a teal dress layered over an orange tee shirt. I added a white and green floral kimono for the background color and a red hat and floral scarf to represent Frida’s flower crown. An unlikely combination of wardrobe pieces that seemed to work together perfectly for this challenge.

teal maxi dress, white and green floral kimono robe, thrifted style, preloved fashions, red Panama hat, red cowgirl boots, winter boho outfit, thrifted scarf, thrifted belt, macrame belt, bright floral scarf, Shelbee on the Edge

I hope you all have enjoyed our colorful outfit selections for this round of Style Imitating Art. If you would like to try one of these style challenges, be sure to stop back on Monday, March 16, 2026, for Salazar’s next art pick.
