SIA Gallery of Style | Dance in Tehuantepec by Diego Rivera
I love the colorful outfits that resulted from this week’s art prompt. If you are interested in learning why I chose this particular artwork, you can read more here and here.
About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as curator, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the curator by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the curator will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join! You are invited to share your images on Instagram or other social media platforms. Just be sure to tag Salazar, Shelbee, and Marsha on Instagram or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!

The Gallery of Style
The submissions are in no particular order. If you have submitted a photo and I did not include it, please let me know and I will make the necessary edits. Sometimes emails get lost in the shuffle. You can read more details about each outfit by clicking on the individual blog links or the images in this post.
Sally of Within a World of My Own
Sally knew immediately that she was going to style this gorgeous skirt as it captures the color palette, nature motifs, and swishy skirt quality apparent in Dance in Tehuantepec. She added a dark coral tank layered beneath a dark teal marled cardigan for an unexpected and very appealing color combination. To capture additional details from the painting, Sally wore gold jewelry to mimic the female dancers and a bracelet that she made to coordinate with the skirt because that’s what Sally does…she makes beautiful coordinating jewelry for all of her outfits!

Marsha of Marsha in the Middle
Although Marsha really liked both paintings, they seemed to stump her but she still delivered! Focusing on the color palettes of both paintings, Marsha opted for her newly acquired “dress” from Daenel because the green color was so similar to the skirt of one dancer in the background. While it may not be a literal interpretation of the artwork, this fabulous “dress” definitely reflects the joyful nature of the dancers!
Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey
Inspired by the color palette of the 1928 painting, Dance in Tehuantepec, Salazar paired a bright green blouse with a subdued orange skirt. Although the orange is slightly lighter than the shade in the painting, Salazar made up for it with her awesome orange brooch. She also chose this green top because the cutouts represent the geometric shapes of the bananas and coconuts at the top of the painting.
Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge
For my outfit, I knew I would wear this burnt ochre dress because the color is spot on for Dance in Tehuantepec, 1928. Then I added a green and orange kimono robe because it captures all the dominant colors in the painting and the floral print reminded me of the banana tree in the painting. I wore my white cowgirl boots to represent the wide white hems on the dancers’ dresses.

As always, I had so much fun with this style game and I love all of the outfits that came to be because of it! I hope you all have enjoyed this round of Style Imitating Art as much as I have. If you would like to try one of these style challenges, be sure to stop back on Monday, May 12, 2025, for Salazar’s choice of the next art inspiration.
Keeping it on the edge,
Shelbee
