SIA Gallery of Style | Composition in Oval with Color Planes 1 by Piet Mondrian
My favorite part of Style Imitating Art is this right here…The Gallery of Style!
About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as curator, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the curator by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the curator will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join! You are invited to share your images on Instagram or other social media platforms. Just be sure to tag Salazar, Shelbee, and Marsha on Instagram or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!
The Artwork

The Gallery of Style
The submissions are in no particular order. If you have submitted a photo and I did not include it, please let me know and I will make the necessary edits. Sometimes emails get lost in the shuffle. You can read more details about each outfit by clicking on the individual blog links or the images in this post.
Mary Young
Mary is a reader of Marsha’s blog and she is joining us for this round because she couldn’t resist this particular challenge. She loves blocks of color and says that the colors in the artwork are her colors. I think her outfit is absolutely wonderful and I agree that these are definitely Mary’s colors!
Sally of Within a World of My Own
Sally took advantage of the pastel color palette and decided to wear her chambray floral print dress one more time before autumn has firmly settled in. She completed her outfit with a whimsical element that she could not resist…her adorable DIY rubber ducky earrings! This shade of blue is so gorgeous on Sally and these earrings are just so wonderful.
Marsha of Marsha in the Middle
Marsha wore a lovely blue April Cornell dress from a couple of years ago because the colors seemed closest to those in the painting. To mimic the black lines of the art work, she added black boots and accessories for a really cool contrast. What a great dress and boots!
Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey
At first glance, Salazar knew she would wear this pretty plaid skirt to represent of all the “color planes” in the artwork. She paired it with the perfect top…a linen button-up with subtle gray stripes to represent the lines in the painting (along with her strappy clogs). And, by happy accident, there is a lace oval on her shirt, too! Plaid is such a clever way to interpret this painting. What a beautiful combination!
And Me!
I combined the three main colors in the painting, pink, blue, and ocher, into one cohesive outfit that is still in line with my personal style aesthetic. The stripes on my ruana represent the lines in the artwork and my necklace and earrings are round in shape to represent the oval.
I hope you have enjoyed this round of Style Imitating Art. At first, I was unsure of this color palette, but the outfits that resulted are so beautiful using these hues! If you would like to try one of these style challenges, be sure to stop back on Monday, September 30, 2024, for Salazar’s next art inspiration.
Keeping it on the edge,
Shelbee

Marsha Banks
Wow! I think this is the most variety we’ve ever had in an SIA challenge…well, maybe not…but everyone came up with different outfits that fit the challenge so well. I really loved this piece of art and finding out more about Mondrian so I’m so glad you chose him, Shelbee!

Thanks, Marsha! I thought this was a really fun one even though it was a bit challenging. I found Mondrian’s history really interesting, too! I had a difficult time choosing one of his works because I found it all so intriguing.
