SIA Gallery of Style | “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” by Georges Seurat
Here it is…the SIA Gallery of Style!
About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as curator, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the curator by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the curator will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join! You are invited to share your images on Instagram or other social media platforms. Just be sure to tag Salazar, Shelbee, and Marsha on Instagram or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!
The Inspiration Artwork
A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat
The Gallery of Style
The submissions are in no particular order. If you have submitted a photo and I did not include it, please let me know and I will make the necessary edits. Sometimes emails get lost in the shuffle. You can read more details about each outfit by clicking on the individual blog links or the images in this post.
Sally of Within a World of My Own
Sally was inspired by the muted color palette of the painting and created a new combination in her wardrobe with a soft blue cardigan, light olive/sage ankle pants, and a leaf print top with a variety of toned-down colors. This soothing color combination is very appealing to me for a late summer/early fall outfit and it really catches the essence of the painting as well. I love the whole look!
Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey
Salazar was stumped by this challenge until she stumbled upon the most perfect top. The embroideries on the front are a fabulous way to represent pointillism and the purple/burgundy color is similar to what several women in the painting are wearing. She paired the top with green culottes to represent the green grass and added one of her trademark accessories, a “girl with a dog” brooch, as a nod to the pets in the painting. Another wonderful interpretation of the painting!
Marsha of Marsha in the Middle
Marsha chose a pigeon blue dress from Gudrun Sjödén primarily because it has a dotty print to represent the pointillistic technique. The blue colors of the dress, which also appear in the painting, were purely and perfectly coincidental. She also added more polka dots by layering a long dotted slip beneath her dotty dress. Marsha completed her refreshing summer outfit with a dramatic and statement making hat “because every lady needs a hat for a day in the park!” Well done, Marsha!
And Me!
With my focus primarily on the lady in the center of the painting wearing pale pink and rusty orange, I created an outfit combination of a light maroon maxi dress and a pink lacy kimono robe. My polka dot umbrella brought some print and pointillism into my otherwise color blocked outfit.
I hope you have enjoyed this round of Style Imitating Art. I really love how all of these outfits are so vastly different but all are so good! If you would like to try one of these style challenges, be sure to stop back on Monday, August 19, 2024, for Salazar’s next art inspiration.

Sally in St Paul
I love seeing how participants with different personal styles make the interpretation their own in their outfits, and this round-up shows wonderful variety in the individual looks while still having a very cohesive feel in the gallery photo. For example, Shelbee and Sally have such totally different outfits but taken together with the painting and the other outfits, they go together really well.
This makes me think how fun it would be if the four of us could time/space travel to this park in the 1880s for a lazy Sunday afternoon. My pants would confuse people but if I tucked my hair under a baseball cap, maybe I could pass for the lounging guy in the lower left corner!

Ooh, I love the way you worded this, Sally. While our outfits are all so vastly different, there is still a certain cohesiveness with the painting that really works. It would be fun to teleport to the Island of Grande Jatte and chill by the Seine with some of my fave blogger friends! Oh, I bet we would have some seriously hearty laughs on the river bank, me with my umbrella and you in your baseball cap!

Nancy
The best about these series is that I almost never know the artist nor the painting! And another fun brooche from Salazar!

Awww, I love that, Nancy! Learning new stuff is fun! Some of the artists that I have chosen myself I had never heard of before. I stumble upon them by luck, I guess. Salazar always has the most perfect brooch. Every. Single. Time. It’s so good!

Oh, this was a fun one, Shelbee! I love how everyone’s was soooo different but perfectly conveyed the “soul” of the painting! I really love this painting!

I agree, Marsha! This was a really fun one. I do like when all of the outfits are in the same color palette, but I also really like when the outfits are totally different in every way! And each outfit is so good in its own right. This really is a wonderful painting, too, isn’t it?
