Shelbee’s Sunday Morning Quarterback: Penn State Survives an Upset 11 Years in the Making

Penn State Nittany Lions 45 – Appalachian State Mountaineers 38

I cannot even pretend to understand what I am about to share here. I am relying heavily on sports news websites and my husband to draft this post. While I have no concept about football terms, game rules and regulations, or anything of the sort, I know that there are many women who do understand, follow, and love football. I also know that there are some football-loving men who read my blog. So this new series is for you: Shelbee’s Sunday Morning Quarterback. I just wanted a forum to share my creative blue and white Penn State inspired outfits every week plus it is always fun to change it up a bit and add something new to one’s standard repertoire of blog post categories. So check back here on Sundays throughout college football season for details about my game day outfit as well as a brief synopsis of Saturday’s Penn State games brought to you by my husband, The Sunday Morning Quarterback.

Penn State Survives an Upset 11 Years in the Making

September 1, 2007, #5 Michigan is down by two points with six seconds remaining, lining up for a 37 yard field goal to win the game and its BLOCKED!!!!! Appalachian State wins the game and the hearts of any college football fan who dislikes Michigan (including myself).

Fast forward 11 years later to #10 Penn State and Beaver Stadium with less than two minutes to go and Appalachian State scores from 16 yards out to go up by a touchdown. I was horrified as all the heckling I’d given Michigan fans the past 11 years was now coming back to me twofold as I’m sure numerous friends of mine were waiting to call me at the end of the game to get in their just dues.

Necklace: Queen Bitter Love Necklace.

Trace McSorley takes over and drives the Nittany Lions down field including a 4th and 2 completion to keep Penn State’s hopes alive and abating some well deserved heckling of me. With 42 seconds to go, McSorley under pressure throws a 15 yard strike to KJ Hamler and ties the game. Whew, I’ve survived regulation…now into overtime. Miles Sanders rushes four straight times for 25 yards and a touchdown. As the defense takes the field, all I can think of is the over 400 yards of offense they had given up today. On a 1st and 10 from the 15 yard line, Zac Thomas throws into the end zone to tie the game and it’s INTERCEPTED!!!! Penn State holds on and will win the game as all of my Michigan fan friends slowly put their phones away. An upset 11 years in the making, almost.

I just started following football this (last?) year, after a lifetime of ignoring it. One cannot ignore football when the entire region is going berserk, plus I love green, and football snacks. And wow! I had no idea I was missing so much excitement! Fly, Eagles, Fly! I am not so knowledgeable about college football. In spite of the fact that I’ve been attending games at University of Delaware for years, I went to wear blue/gold clothing, to tailgate, and for the snacks. See a recurring theme here?

That being said, I adore Penn State.
From the bottom of my neophyte heart, I root for Penn State. They are my second favorite team, right after the UD Fighting Blue Hens. Let me tell you why.

First, they aren’t that big, especially if you compare Penn State to UCLA or any other mega-huge school, with lots of resources. Yet, Penn State still manages to attract excellent football talent, and they do it without said huge resources. They attract talent because they are a formidable force.

Second, Penn State gives their students, an excellent curriculum. Few students from Penn State speak like Josh Rosen. At the very least, when Penn State players talk smack, they use decent English.

Third, they are a local team, sort of. Many, many of my friends attended Penn State, and I like to root for local teams.

Fourth, Penn State colors are blue and white. My second favorite color combo, right after blue and gold. You can attend a Penn State game, and still look nice. Unlike Harvard. Crimson and Gold? No one looks good in Crimson and Gold, except maybe Einstein, and he went to the University of Zurich. No one looks good in Black and Yellow either. Those Steelers remind me of giant, football playing bumblebees.

These are my neophyte reasons for liking Penn State, and I hope they continue to supply me with more.
    Hail to the Lion!

OMG, Susan! I just read your comment to my husband and we are cracking up! You are too much! And these reasons for loving Penn State are brilliant and perfectly good reasons. I love Penn State because my husband told me I had to and if I didn’t, it would very probably end in the dissolution of our marriage! That being said, your reasons are better than mine! But I do like the snacks. I always like the snacks.

Thanks so much, Emma! I understand fashion way better than most sports, too! The funny thing is, my husband has picked up on a lot of fashion terms from living with me for so long and taking my photos. Yet, I fail time and again and learning about football even after 10 years of living with him!

      xoxo
