Shelbee on the Rags: “Coffee Break” Rag Curtain & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up On the Edge #698
This next raggery project was inspired by my “Café au Lait” Shaggy Raggy Garland. After the garland was completed and my older son said it looked like coffee, I got the idea to create a large rag curtain in a similar color palette with the image of a coffee cup.
But I really wasn’t sure how to do it!
When I created the “Carolina on My Mind” rag curtain in the shape of a tree, I was guided completely by prayer and faith in the artistic process. For the coffee cup curtain, however, I was not confident in faith alone and needed a little more concrete assistance.
So I got a big roll of brown paper and drew the outline of a coffee cup to follow as pattern and I am so pleased with the final outcome. This time I took lots of photos of the curtain as I was building it. Check it out…
I didn’t think I could do it but I surprised myself! Isn’t she adorable?
I named her “Coffee Break” for obvious reasons. She’s 7.5’ tall and 4’ wide, made from unwanted sheets and pillow cases, a blanket, some curtains, and a few pairs of pants. She needs a new home and I need to start working on my next ideas. I did a massive closet clean out yesterday so I have bags and bags of unwanted clothing to turn into raggery art. What should I make next?

Ha! Very clever and so cute! Great strategy for creating the coffee cup. We often have to create new methods in order to create.

Thanks, Michelle! I have definitely been very innovative in finding new strategies for creating. That’s almost as fun as the creating itself!

She is fabulous! I didn’t see the cup at first but then once I did it’s all I could see. Funny how our eyes and brains work like that.

Thanks, Joanne! I attempted to add a saucer beneath the cup but the colors were too close together so you can’t see it at all. But I am really happy that I made the cup form come to life!

It looks so cool, Shelbee! I love that you’re so passionate about creating things with old fabric—it’s very bohemian and very you!! Have you made a rainbow yet?
Big hugs, my friend

Suzy, thanks so much, my friend! I have not made a rainbow yet, but I do have a few different versions of rainbow curtains sketched out! So there will be one at some point!

What a clever idea! I don’t think I would have ever thought to use a pattern! I would have just been winging it and then swearing under my breath the whole time! And, of course, eventually, I would have given up! I love this! Surely there’s a coffee shop that will buy it…I can just see it in a front window or hanging on a wall! You are so daggone creative, my friend! Thanks for the link up!

Marsha, thank you so much! Actually, it was my husband’s idea to use a pattern. I winged it on the tree one and I was definitely cursing under my breath. But I did not give up! Ha. I wish my elbow would stop hurting so I can make more. But I really am running out of places to put the things so I guess a break is a good thing right now.
