Shelbee on the Rags: “Bohemian Blues” Rag Curtains
While this is the fifth post in my Shelbee on the Rags series featuring my raggery projects, these curtains are actually the first raggery project that I ever made.
Back in June, I gave my bedroom a bohemian makeover and I could not find curtains that I liked anywhere. So I decided to make my own. Initially I was going to sew my own patchwork curtains and I bought about 20 yards of quilting fabrics to get started. But before I even laundered the fabrics, I realized that I was not skilled enough to pull off a sewing project of this sort. And this is when I discovered no-sew rag curtains for a perfectly bohemian aesthetic. I am not going to detail the process of making these curtains because I previously shared that information in my Bohemian Bedroom Makeover post. These photos all appear in that post as well. But I did want a dedicated place for my very first rag curtain project.
I made these three curtain in stages and had to buy new fabrics for each one. It did end up using about 20 yards of fabric for each window and it did end up getting a bit pricey by the time I was finished. This is what led me to start using thrift store garments instead of buying new fabrics!
I build the curtains directly onto the curtain rods so I left the third window cut out to accommodate the air conditioner without having to tie the curtains back. I had planned to fill it in when we took the air conditioner out of the window for the season, but then I kind of liked the unique shape of it so I’m leaving it!
I am already brainstorming my next rag curtain. The image has formed beautifully and brilliantly in my head, its name has been chosen, and its rod has been purchased. I just need to go thrifting to find the fabrics I need and get to work. I am hoping that I can make it look like the image in my mind!

There is something very soothing about textiles, imo. Your bedroom looks like a very calm and comforting space with your raggery curtains. Well done, my friend!

Thanks so much! I seriously love my bedroom so much! It is exactly how I always imagined my bedroom and now I have finally made it come to life. I keep saying how pictures do not do justice to these curtains. I think it is because the nature of the textiles makes you want to touch and feel the curtains. They are so much better when you add the tactile to the visual!

So very cool and you are super creative. You need your own show on HGTV.

Thanks, Patrick! No tv shows for me though. I do not ever want to be on video or television for any reason! Not my thing! LOL

How beautiful these are, Shelbee! How in the world did you move from a patchwork quilt to these rag strips? That’s such a creative use. Isn’t it funny how, so very often, creating our own things costs more than buying ready made? But, then you don’t have the satisfaction of making it, right?
Have a fabulous week, Shelbee!

Marsha, thanks so much! I was actually looking for no-sew options when I stumbled upon the idea of rag curtains. These projects certainly are not honing my novice sewing skills, but I definitely consider myself a master of knot tying now! LOL I find the whole process so therapeutic and there is great satisfaction in the finished projects. And now that I have started using old clothing instead of new fabric, the overhead cost is much less.
