Restyling My Wedding Dress for Thanksgiving Day
First, I want to wish all of my American readers a very Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving! We are hanging out at my sister’s house today in our most comfy clothes, stuffing our faces with all the delectable treats. Recently, I restyled my wedding dress for a photoshoot and seeing as it probably won’t fit me after all the holiday food consumption, now is great time to share it.
My tenth wedding anniversary is quickly approaching…January 23 will mark a decade of wedded bliss with my favorite soldier. Being married to a man in the military means that we are both married to the military. Once again, my husband will be very far away on our anniversary this year. I think this anniversary will be the seventh one that we have had to spend away from each other. But we get used to celebrating holidays and anniversaries and birthdays in very nontraditional ways because this military life forces us to do it that way.
So while we have never had some big extravagant anniversary celebration in years past, this one coming is kind of a big one. A decade flew by without my even realizing all the time that has passed. I suppose time has a tendency to do that when you are living a happily ever after scenario. My first marriage, which only lasted 2 1/2 years, felt like a freaking eternity. And now here I am in the blink of an eye, happier than I ever imagined, a full 10 years into this gig. And that is something to celebrate.
And what better way to celebrate marital bliss than by donning one’s wedding dress for every day wear. This actually wasn’t planned at all. It is just a random outfit post, two months before my anniversary date, but it seemed like a fun thing to do. Actually, I had acquired this adorable gray and white plaid blazer on a thrifting trip and I was dying to style it in a vintage inspired sort of way. After trying it on with a pile of different dresses in my closet, I began to lose patience with the damn thing. Nothing seemed to be working.
I had previously slipped the jacket on over an all white outfit with white tights and while it didn’t match that outfit very well, I was loving the look of it over white tights. I had this idea stuck in my head…the blazer with white tights. So after racking my brain for a bit, I had determined that this little jacket needed a little white dress that was fitted and had a classic vintage vibe. I probably own 15 different little white dresses and none were working. Then I remembered my wedding dress tucked carefully in the back of my closet. I wasn’t sure if it would fit me 10 years and 2 kids after I purchased it, but it was worth a try.
Much to my pleasure and excitement, it fit perfectly and I had an outfit for my new thrifted blazer. I did experience some disappointment when I realized there is coffee splattered all over my white wedding dress. After multiple treatments and washings, it just isn’t coming out. Which is kind of a bummer, but if I always wear a jacket over it, maybe I will get some more wear out of this pretty little dress.
My wedding dress is not a traditional wedding gown as we had a small casual backyard ceremony. But there are so many fun ways to restyle or repurpose your wedding dress. I found this great Cosmopolitan article, 10 Stunning Ways to Rewear Your Wedding Dress, that shows some really unique ways to restyle your wedding gown, like detaching the top from the skirt and having two separate pieces that can be made casual or pairing a slip style wedding dress with a moto jacket and boots for an cool edgy street style look.
Have you ever considered restyling your wedding dress?

Shelbee, I am smitten with this outfit. What a fabulous way to style your adorable wedding dress. You captured a chic 60s vibe perfectly! Love the plaid coat and textured tights. And the addition of a burgundy color for the accessories was brilliant.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Theresa, thanks so much! My dress is very reminiscent of my mother’s wedding dress (from the 60’s) and she wore a similar plaid jacket but it was navy and white. I was so excited how much this cute thrifted jacket reminded me of hers. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

What a lovely post Shelbee, I’m sure I don’t know where my dress is!! I do still know where the veil is – my daughter had it re-styled and wore if for her wedding in May, I was thrilled with it, and it bought tears to my eyes, especially as she was married in the same church David and I were married in some 33 years ago! We also found our name on the register – same book!! Happy end of the week Hun. xx

Jacqui, thanks so much! I love that your daughter restyled your veil. What a beautiful way to honor you on her very special day! I am sure you were overwhelmed with emotions over it all. Such a lovely story. Thank you for sharing! Have a wonderful weekend.

Lovely outfit! I have a suggestion about your wedding dress and the coffee – depending on where the coffee is and your personal taste. Buy white doilies from Amazon and stitch them down over the coffee stains. I am going to use this idea to cover up some snags in 2 pairs of capris that were snagged by my dog’s claws.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

Ooh, Michelle, I bet that would look darling on my dress and your capris! I cannot guarantee it is something I will ever get around to, but I love the idea! Most of the spots are where that could be done and look really adorable, but there are a few spots along the neckline on the ruffly part. Thanks for the wonderful idea! I love it! Have a fantastic weekend!

What a fun way to wear your wedding dress again: I love this outfit and that plaid sweater/jacket looks like it is made for it. I love that you can wear your dress again, mine was a traditional one and I think I ended up donating it.

Thank you, Mireille! That article I linked in the post had some really cute ways to repurpose a traditional wedding dress. It kind of made me wish I had a traditional one!

It’s a fabulous coat and I love the dress and you found the perfect way to style it! I’m also seeing styling the coat like Hepburn – black turtleneck, black skinny ankle pants, strappy heels or a black pencil skirt and black boots. I love the pops of burgundy with the sandals and cloche style hat (looks absolutely adorable on you!) I’m also in love with those burgundy booties you linked to as alternatives. I think I’m going to have to pull my wedding dress out (also not traditional – I bought mine at Casual Corner (that’ll tell you how long ago that was) and see how I can re-style it (after checking for stains) – I love that idea! I wonder if you could do a tea stain (or coffee stain) on yours to darken it just enough to hide those coffee stains?
Thanks so much for the link-up!

Ruth, this comment has so many brilliant suggestions! Thank you so much! I may look into tea staining the dress. I bet that would create a really cool vibe for it. As for the jacket, I seriously had no idea what other ways to style it, but I am dying over this Hepburn-esque idea with black turtleneck and black cigarette pants. So cute! I can’t wait to see what you do with your dress!
