“Portrait of Abigail Rose” by Anonymous | Style Imitating Art

It is time for another Style Imitating Art challenge and I have to admit that I am so grateful for these prompts. If not for style challenges, I might not ever get out of my leggings or sweatpants these days!

About Style Imitating Art

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of Meadow Tree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.

You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag SalazarTerri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!

This Week’s Presenter

Terri chose this week’s artwork because she likes the quaintness of it and there are lots of little details that can be used to inspire outfit creation. She had originally planned to feature this painting with its 18th century American theme in February for President’s Day. Since the colors were so similar to “Decline of the Day” that Salazar had curated the previous week, Terri decided to put Miss Abigail Rose on hold until now.

The Artwork
“Portrait of Abigail Rose” by Unknown Artist
Oil on Canvas, 1786

Like Terri, I am also drawn to the quaintness of this portrait and the subdued earth tones which will lend themselves nicely to an autumn outfit. The image portrays 14 year old Abigail Rose from North Branford, Connecticut, painted by an anonymous artist from New Haven, Connecticut. The painting remained in Abigail’s family until 2011 when it sold at auction for $1,271,000, breaking the record for American folk art portraiture. It is also only one of three folk art portraits to surpass the million dollar mark at auction.

If you want to be featured with your art inspired outfit in Terri’s review post on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, be sure to submit your photos to her at meadowtreestyle@gmail.com by 10:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, November 15, 2022.

Happy Styling!

Keeping it on the edge,

Shelbee
