Painting the World in Tie Dye with Sherri’s Shirts & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up #139
Did you know tie dye was trending? It seems kind of odd calling tie dye a trend when it has been a classic garment in American culture since the 1960’s. However, it has been around in the States since as early as the 1920’s and remained popular through the Depression era as people used tie dying techniques to redecorate their homes by refreshing old fabrics into new and unique pieces. But it dates even further back than that as a classic method of dying clothing in Ancient Asia. As far back as 6th century India, tie dye techniques were used to color fabrics for garments and this dying process is still used today.
While we often think of tie dye as an American trend originating with the psychedelic era of the 1960’s, it is, in fact, a much beloved style that we see year in and year out, during every season, in nearly every country of the world. So rather than call it a trend, I suppose it is more aptly referred to as a timeless and worldly classic.
As you know, I had spent my Summer weekends frequenting bluegrass festivals when it became glaringly apparent to me that my closet was severely lacking in tie dye items. My husband has been a huge Grateful Dead fan for as long as I have known him, actually for probably most of his life, and his collection of tee shirts ranges from tie dye to sports themed to Army. He even has some that combine multiple elements of these themes. So where was all my tie dye?
I slowly started adding a few pieces, starting with a dress that I found at the consignment shop, and two hoodies from Rosegal that I will be sharing soon. But I didn’t have any actual done-by-hand tie dyed items and was seriously wanting.
When I went to Hickory Fest last month, among all the amazing people I met there and made wonderful connections with was a wonderful woman named Sherri. I was introduced to Sherri by my dear friend Libby of Jakobs Ferry Stragglers. Sherri and I connected immediately. I was drawn to her easy and comfortable nature and her friendly demeanor as she welcomed me lovingly right into her inner circle of festival friends.
I was also drawn to her personal style of mixed up tie dyed patterns combined into one outfit complete with a Grateful Dead Dancing Bear patch sewn prominently on the front of her colorful dress. When I see someone expressing such joy and happiness through their appearance and style, I really want to get to know them. That was Sherri. From her style to her energy, all things were telling me that we should be friends. We spent Friday night into the early morning hours of Saturday engaged in fascinating conversation that felt quite like we had known each other for a very long time. Those are the best kinds of connections, aren’t they?
On top of just being a really cool lady, Sherri is also a very talented tie dye artist. She is the sole proprietor of Sherri’s Shirts with a mission to Paint the World in Tie Dye. The craving for a new tie dye piece became strong and hard to resist as the festival weekend continued. I was not going to leave this place without one of Sherri’s creations.
Sherri was digging my colorful parasol and since I had a few extras for sale, we negotiated a little barter. One colorful parasol in exchange for a fun tie dyed tee shirt. I was drawn to the shades of green and purple in the tee shirt I chose. I preferred the smaller fitted style tee over a basic oversized menswear tee shirt. It simply sings to my hippie heart. And then Sherri was kind enough to sell the rest of my parasols for me! Thanks, Sherri!
If you are a fan of tie dye, you need to check out Sherri’s Shirts. She has some of the most gorgeous shirts, dresses, skirts, socks, and tapestries. I really need some cool tie dye socks the next time I see Sherri which will probably be next August 14-16 at Hickory Fest. I need to start a tie dye fund so I can by all the things!
Do you wear tie dye? Does it bring the same joy as it does me and Sherri?
And now your featured favorites from last week’s party.
Nicole of High Latitude Style shared a new Made in the USA brand of legwear in her post, Hipstik Legwear Review. Because my climate in Northern New York is very similar to Nicole’s Alaska climate, I am all for a good pair of tights. These seem like an absolute winner! So if you are a tights gal like Nicole and myself, definitely read this post!
Tilden of To Be Bright shared a very helpful post after a very frustrating experience, My IG Got Hacked: How I Got It Back and Why It Was a Blessing in Disguise. Bloggers need to stick together in this game, so posts like this are always appreciated in an effort to help other bloggers avoid these disheartening experiences. I am glad Tilden was able to recover her account.

I just saw a segment on tie dye and that it originated in Japan. The creations they were making were amazing! Love your tee and this cool casual look! Thanks for the link up.

Thanks, Kathrine! I did a tiny bit of research on it and what I found was that tie dye originated in Ancient Asia. Also, aren’t the Indian Batik prints a method of tie dye as well? I have always been drawn to Asian and Indian inspired styles, so I guess it is natural that I appreciate tie dye.

Carrie @ Curly Crafty Mom
My daughter and I made tie dye shirts together over Memorial Day weekend and I love twinning with her when we wear them on the same day. It does seem to be coming back around. I love the different ways you wore your tie dye shirt, esp with that colorful kimono!

Carrie, thanks so much! That sounds like a fun project to tie dye with kids. I haven’t done it since I was a kid. I am kind of afraid to try it at home with my boys after the mess that resulted from dying their hair! I bet you look adorable twinning in your tie dyes!

Nicole of High Latitude Style
Thanks for featuring me. Yes, these tights are so cool. You tie dyed T-shirt is sort of interesting. Typically they are just circles or striped horizontally. This vertical approach is so much more flattering and so much chicer. It doesn’t have that retro “deja vue” vibe. It feels fresh and new. Great look. Love your olive coat!

Thanks so much, Nicole! I thought the pattern was pretty unique on this tee, too. Another reason chose it!

“Mama was a dead-head and my pampers were tie-dyed.” Very nice, I have tie-dyed stuff and love the Dead since I was about 10. Tell hubby that I used to know Annabelle Garcia (one of Jerry’s daughters) back in the day. If you guys ever make it out here, I would take you to 710 Ashbury which is the famous old house of the Dead.
Have a great Tuesday and enjoy the long strange trip we are on. Looking very nice.

Thanks so much, Patrick! We definitely need to get out there one day! We had a brief visit 10 years on our honeymoon and haven’t been back to the area since. It is a long strange trip, indeed!

I got such a laugh at the photo of your husband as the “human coat rack” and had to show my husband. I think our guys can relate!! Lol! When I was in my teens, we actually made our own tie-dye. But none as gorgeous as Sherri’s. What a find!!
Have a great week, Shelbee,

Tie-dye is a fabulous Americana classic that seems to re-invent itself every decade or so. Your friend Sherri definitely has a talent and I especially adore the vibrant colors in many of her items. My daughter loved making tie-dye t-shirts and such at camp. As always, you are looking marvelous, my friend!

Rena, my friend, thank you so much! I hope you are doing well. I agree that tie dye does reinvent itself often and I am always drawn to it, so I don’t know why my closet was so lacking! I am thinking tie dye may be a fun theme for The Magnificent 8 one of these months…maybe in the Spring or Summer. Stay tuned for an email update coming soon with details for the October post.

Yes, meeting people that you completely hit it off with are truly the best. And I also love tie dye! I have a tie dye sweatshirt that I have had for a couple of years that I adore so much. The unique style of tie dye is something I will not fall out of love with. EVER. 🙂 Sherri is very talented and her work is beautiful. I hope your day is going well so far and happy Tuesday.

I have a tie-dyed T-shirt that I love (and wear all the time). Your outfit—and the setting—feels very Woodstock to me, which reminds me, there’s a great documentary about Woodstock that just came out on Netflix. I highly recommend it!

Cheryl, thanks so much! I have two tie dye hoodies I will be sharing soon, too. I just read an fascinating article about Woodstock and how an archeologist discovered that there was very little to no trash left behind at the venue because more than 8,000 attendees stayed behind to make sure it was cleaned up properly. A testament to the wonderful people who attended that event. I will have to look for this documentary. Thanks for the recommendation!

Daenel T.
Shelbee, your husband is too funny.
Love that top. It doesn’t look like traditional tie dye, so I had to zoom in and take a look. Not that I didn’t believe you, it’s just I’ve always seen tie dye in starburst patterns rather than straight{ish} lines. Very cool.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks, Daenel! He is a pretty funny guy! He makes me laugh daily and that is really fantastic! I was drawn to the non traditional tie dye pattern of this tee, but I never really liked the way it fit me so it moved on during my last closet clean out. I need to see Sherri soon and get some of her new fabulous tie dye things! She creates the prettiest dresses and happiest hoodies, too! Hopefully, I will run into her next summer during festival season!
