Opposite Day & Your Own Twist Link Up #40
January 25 is National Opposite Day, a creative child’s philosophy course turned into an annual celebration of opposites. This self referential paradox lends itself to a day filled with all sorts of philosophical questionings which can lead to fun experiments in opposites.
Have you ever wondered what the world would look like if everything was the opposite of what it is? What if the sky were green and the grass were blue? What if mathematics was not an exact science? What if we walked on our hands instead of our feet? What if children ruled the world? What if rain fell up instead of down?
The aim of Opposite Day is for children, young and old alike, to have a bit of silly fun speaking and doing things in opposite all day long. Start the day with a joyful, “Good evening! I would like a steak dinner for breakfast, please!” And end the evening with a hearty breakfast for dinner and a joyful good morning greeting. You could take some time to study opposite things or watch a Freaky Friday style movie. You could wear socks on your hands and mittens on your feet. Or you could simply sleep all day instead of being awake!
When we were deciding on monthly prompts for Your Own Twist, I thought Opposite Day would also make a fun style prompt. It seemed wide open for all kinds of interesting interpretations. And I had all sorts of ideas swimming around in my brain. Initially, I had considered creating a menswear style outfit…a little gender flipping seemed appropriate for Opposite Day. I also thought about wearing leg warmers on my arms and wearing some article of clothing backwards. I also had contemplated wearing a swim suit in the snow but with -40 degree temperatures hitting us lately, that was too insane even for me to pull off! Although I know that Nicole has done it and I applaud her bravery…you can read her post and See Why 40 Below Was Great for a Bikini Look.
But there are to be no bikini photos in the snow for this girl. If I am heading out into the snow, I am wearing clothes and lots of them. So I took the easiest (and warmest) route possible and opted for a cozy black and white outfit. What could be possibly be more opposite than the two extremes of no visible light and all visible light? Simple. Classic. Fun. The perfect contrast of opposites that always works.
Plus I have had this cute black and white houndstooth skirt hanging around my closet room begging to worn with my new fold over sherpa boots. It was the perfect opportunity to pair them together for my own twist on Opposite Day!
And then I pulled out some other cozy things like a black turtleneck sweater, my white furry vest and my velvet tuxedo blazer. Black tights, white gloves, black beret, ivory bag. I stuck with opposites and opposites worked in my favor for one of my favorite outfits this year!
My gray scarf, which falls somewhere between black and white, was never intended to be worn with this outfit, but I grabbed it as we walked out the door just to keep my shoulders warm for the drive. I ended up keeping it on for some photos because it was what I wore.
About Your Own Twist
Your Own Twist is a monthly link party hosted by Monica of Jersey Girl, Texan Heart and me on the third Thursday of every month with the goal of inspiring some of our friends to get creative with personal style.
The idea behind this collaboration is to take one common piece or theme and style it our own way with our own twist…Monica and I have both taken a lot of fashion inspiration from one another over the past few years even though we have totally different styles. It is always fun to see how we can interpret similar items in unique ways or what kind of twist we will each bring to the chosen theme.
We will let you know the themes well in advance in the event that you would like to use the theme for your own post and add it to the link party. However, any fashion posts are welcome regardless of whether you used the theme or not. Check out the graphic below which has some of our upcoming style prompts.
Monica is taking this month off from blogging to spend some time with her sweet new baby girl Scarlett. She will be back again next month for our Library Lovers theme. Feel free to style your own outfit and write a post for linking up! Or if you are interested in co-hosting any of our upcoming Your Own Twist Link Parties, just let me know and I will send you the details!

Beautiful outfit, you look so warm and stylish. Love the location too, what great photos 🙂
Thank you so much for the feature and hosting.
I was going to keep off the internet today too as it is the 1st year anniversary of my father’s death. Just popped on for 10 minutes to take my mind off things.
Have a lovely Thursday and thanks again xx

Thanks so much, Claire! We have some pretty cool buildings in my town that make for great photo backdrops. My father has been on my mind a lot this week as well. He passed on January 22, 1995, and it still brings me a sense of sadness around this time of year. Sending you lots of healing energy, my friend.

I didn’t realize there was an opposite day but I can tell you 16 years ago in January I hosted my son’s birthday party and the theme was Backwards Birthday! We did everything in reverse which sort of reminds me of opposite day. As his guests arrived we said “Thanks for coming, bye!” Ha! And lots of goofy things like that!
You look like a snow princess Shelbee! I love these snowy, fashionable pictures!

Thanks so much, Kellyann! I love that story of your son’s Backwards Birthday! So silly and so fun. You were celebrating Opposite Day without even knowing it!
As much as I hate this dreadful snow all winter long, I do like my snowy photo shoots, too!

You look adorable in this outfit, and you also found another amazing spot for photos! Love the hunter green and brick background.

Thanks so much, Amy! I really loved this outfit! And these green buildings are some of my favorites in town. I have done lots of pictures around this area but depending on the angles, it can look like a bunch of different places!

Michelle,
What a super cute outfit! I think your opposites day inspiration worked very well. Including the gray scarf. 😄 If 5 year olds ruled the world, I think we’d have far less prejudice and more curiosity.

I love this outfit! I really like how your fuzzy white vest mimics with the fur/ fuzz trim of the boots. I’m wearing all black and white today; black fleece lined shoes with some black fleece lined leggins and a white fuzzy top with little black hearts dotted all over.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Joanne, thanks so much! I got really excited at how well this old vest paired with the new boots! It made me dance in the snow! Haha. Your black and white outfit sounds adorable! I want to see this white fuzzy top with black heart shaped dots, please.

This outfit looks so warm for a stroll in the snow! And, you’ve gotten lots of snow! We have only gotten at the most an inch here. I really love the white fur on those boots, so, so fun!

Carrie, thanks so much! We have gotten feet of snow by this point in the season! Heck, we got feet of snow in one storm already this year. Actually twice this year. Haha. We are just buried in the stuff until spring. I will be one happy human when we move south in 10 years!

Your True Self
Hi, Shelbee – I love the serendipity of your playful take on Opposites Day. Lol! Besides being bold and creative, you always have something interesting and entertaining to say. And my, your hair is so long! Congrats on that. Thanks for hosting your linkups – Angie, http://www.yourtrueselfblog.com
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Angie, thanks so much! You just made my day with this comment! I am glad that I can entertain. If I can bring just a tiny bit of extra joyfulness into the world, then I am doing what I set out to do! That validation is priceless. And oh, this hair! As much as I love it, it is so tedious and really needs some professional help. But it is how I envisioned myself in midlife…I wanted to have long, gray, hippie hair and now I have exactly that!

Oh, there is nothing cooler than seeing my picture on your blog!!!! Thanks so much!
I had no idea there was such a thing as National Opposite Day, but I remember using that excuse a lot when I was a kid on the school bus to let some cute boy know I was interested in him!! And, I love all of these ideas. I’m going to have to remember and celebrate the day!! I like breakfast for dinner anyway, so we’ll definitely be doing that one!
I adore your take on this opposite trend. Grey is one of my favorite colors…and what makes grey…black and white! Love, love, love it all!!!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Aw, thanks so much, Marsha! I have never actually celebrated Opposite Day until now but I think we might have to do B for D on Tuesday as well. We love breakfast for dinner, too! Maybe I will make the kids’ favorite…Fruity French Toast Strata! Gray is a really grayte color, isn’t it?! I mean, it is in the word great! Haha. I am drawn to all shades of gray myself and have lots of it in my closet. I have another really big cozy gray scarf similar to this one and one of the two is usually draped over the back of my couch so I can throw it over me when I catch a chill. And they coordinate with anything I am wearing! That is another beautiful thing about the color gray.

Fun idea for a theme and a cute outfit! You can’t go wrong with black and white and you layer so well 🙂

Kathrine Eldridge
What a fun theme for this post Shelbee! I love the layering of your vest and blazer. When I hear of opposite day all I can think of is George Costanza from Seinfeld. The episode is hilarious becuase he decides to do everything opposite of what he would normally do. Thanks so much for the link up!
https://www.kathrineeldridge.com
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Kathrine! I am laughing so hard right now at the George Constanza reference! When I was researching the history of Opposite Day almost every article referenced that Seinfeld episode! I thought I had watched every single Seinfeld episode, but I do not remember that one! I may have to go watch it. Although Seinfeld annoys me very much in this decade whereas I loved it three decades ago!

A huge yes to ALL the cozy clothes in cold January! Can’t recall the last day we didn’t have single digit temperatures!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks, Michele! It has been so stinking cold here, it is unbearable and makes me really want to hibernate! Ooooh, I just bought two really cute and cozy sweater dresses for just this sort of weather. Maybe I’ll throw one on this weekend and take indoor photos! I hope you have an amazing weekend, my friend.

Monochrome takes a lot of beating and really complements the starkness of the season. Love love that furry vest! Hoping my little homage to Zandra Rhodes fits in with the theme today.

I love this combination and the number of pieces and layers in contrasting black and white. I was just thinking the other day I should do more black and white. I tend to go with monochromes witht them but putting them together is classy and fun.

Gosh, I haven’t thought about Opposite Day in a blue moon. We used to celebrate by having dessert first at dinner time. Thanks for the rekindling a happy memory.
And thank you for linking up for #agelessstyle. This has to be one of the prettiest photo shoots I’ve seen. I love your outfit. Cute skirt, those great boot toppers, that soft fur vest. And your backdrop is so pretty a pristine. I love the snow. Wish we would have just one good snow before spring.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Leslie! I really appreciate that. I love the idea of dessert first on Opposite Day! We are planning breakfast for dinner on that day. Aren’t these shearling boots so fun? The whole inside is lined with the cozy stuff to keep my feet toasty and warm and then you can fold them down however you like or wear them up and they are just plain black boots. I hope you have a lovely weekend, my friend! Maybe there will be snow coming your way soon!
