One Thrifted Skirt Styled Five Different Ways & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up #200

paisley skirt styled 5 different ways

The boredom has really taken over these last few weeks as the weather has turned to much too cold for me to step outside. Obviously, I do step outside sometimes because you see photos of me in the outdoors all the time here. But let me tell you, those jaunts into the great outdoors literally last about 15 minutes before I am scrambling back into the warm car to head home and change into my coziest winter lounge clothes.

Yes, I have returned to a life of lounge clothes once again…exactly where I was back in March and April at the beginning of this dumb pandemic. During the warmer months of summer and early fall, I took pleasure in putting on cute outfits and staying dressed in them for the whole day. But that was at a time when I actually stepped out into my yard or sat on my porch to work. I really don’t see the point right now in keeping the cute outfits on all day long when I am just freezing no matter what I do.

But I do still get much joy from creating the outfits and stepping into the bitter cold for just a few minutes in an effort to capture my creativity with photographic evidence. At least I will have all these outfits already planned and ready to wear when venturing into public spaces becomes a thing again.

In the meantime, however, I have been finally organizing my mess of a closet room. I did not clean out any items yet because my brain simply could not handle organizing and deciding what to keep and what to discard. So I focused on the organizing and kept it all for now. But that also meant moving about half of my wardrobe into basement bins so I could actually stand inside my closet room once again and play dress up.

I have finally accepted that I will never have enough space to house all of my clothing together unless I move into a 7,000 square foot home with gigantic walk in closets. And since that’s not ever gong to happen, I will get my exercise by running between the basement and the second floor to get dressed.

Here a few images of my closet room after I organized it, so you can imagine what a disaster it looked like before. I honestly was too embarrassed to take any before photos!

Once I got the closet room to where I can go inside and play around with my clothing and accessories, I decided it was high time to do exactly that…have a little fun just playing dress up!

During the organizing process, I rediscovered this adorable paisley midi skirt that I had thrifted so long ago that I cannot even remember when. I don’t think I have ever worn it before, but it was just too cute not to give it a try. You know I am having this current love affair with all things paisley and these colors are totally my jam. Speaking of paisley, you still have a few days to send us your paisley things for this months Good Buy/Good-Bye Book!

Anyway, the other night I decided to see how many different outfits I could create with this skirt using the things in my closet, so I started playing around with different genres. I created three outfits, got tired, and didn’t take a single photo. But I had so much fun with this idea that I solicited Jeff to play indoor photographer for me at the top of the stairs right outside my magical closet room!

Here are my five different looks using this black and red paisley skirt. Details for each are below.

French Inspired

I paired the skirt with a chunky black turtleneck sweater, a geometric printed neckerchief in the same color palette, red patent booties, and a red beret for a fun French inspired winter outfit.

Grunge Girl

I came of age in the midst of the grunge movement, so my brain almost automatically leans toward that style genre especially with very unlikely pieces like a midi length paisley skirt. For this look, I paired the skirt with my favorite black combat boots, my Bowie tee, a denim shirt, red leather jacket, long skinny velvet scarf, and slouchy hat. This one outfit itself has three different ways I could wear it by switching around the top layers.

For the Office

I don’t work in an office, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy getting a little bit dressed up sometimes, too. For this look, I added a striped tunic blouse for a bit of pattern mixing. A black blazer makes it suitable for office attire. Nude and gold accessories kept a classic vibe to the whole thing. Please excuse the peek of my red bra there…apparently this shirt is a tad too tight across the bust!

Inspired by School Days

There is something so adorable about brogues with socks paired with any style of skirt that I just can’t get enough of. So I created this school days look with a white button down shirt under a cat motif sweater to match the whimsy of the socks and brogues and newsboy cap.

Bluegrass Inspired

To honor all the missed Bluegrass festivals this past summer, I felt like this skirt lent itself to a Western inspired festival style outfit. Plus it also reminds me of something Libby might wear! Libby is the fiddling gal and beautiful vocalist for one of my favorite Bluegrass bands, The Jakobs Ferry Stragglers. So I wore my JFS tee with a lace kimono, a leather obi belt, my red cowboy boots, and a straw bucket hat. Gold feather motif earrings and necklace seemed to be the perfect finishing touch.

I rarely do posts like this with multiple ways to style one piece. Mostly because the photography and editing part of it becomes a whole hell of a lot of work for one blog post. But I had a lot of fun with this! So I am wondering if you all would like to see more posts like this? Since I am just hanging around at home playing dress up in my closet anyway! Let me know in the comments. Also tell me which is your favorite way that I have styled this skirt?

Thanks so much, Michelle! Of course I knew you would like this skirt! Actually, this skirt is comfortable enough to lounge in with a cozy sweater, but I would definitely still need to wear leggings to keep warm. That is the nature of the North Country Winter Beast! Haha

And I thought I had a lot of clothes and shoes! Take photos indoors Shelbee. These ones are just as lovely as outside. And can I just say that what I love about you is your honesty. Sending the love sister xx

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Laurie, thanks so much, my friend! Yeah, my honesty can get me in trouble sometimes, but I don’t know how to be any other way! I was happy with this little space at the top of the stairs for indoor photos. I have struggled for years trying to find good photo spots in my house and I think I finally did!

First of all, you have a closet room!!!! Oh how I wish I did too #goals lol!!! That skirt sure is versatile. It goes from office to casual so easily. I love the school days inspired outfit. You look terrific Shelbee!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Kellyann, thanks so much! Oh my gosh, when we moved to this house almost 4 years ago, we moved from a house with a huge walk in closet. This old house has almost no closets at all. So we converted the smallest bedroom into my closet room! The room is about 8X10 so really tiny but it is my favorite room in the house (when it’s organized)! I think the school days look is the one that feels most “me”!

Now that’s a lot of clothes my friend! You might need by closet audit services. Just kidding my friend. I know it’s a little different for bloggers because I know we can come back to things. You did a great job organizing. Love this first look the best with the beret and those chic booties. Thanks so much for the link up!

Kathrine, thanks so much! I probably could benefit from some help in this crazy closet of mine! But I seriously have a hard time parting with things…especially if they still fit. I always come back to things in my closet…like this skirt that has been hanging there for who knows how long! Haha. Now to get all the sweaters in the basement organized in their bins by color or something so I don’t have go digging all the time! But that’s another project for another day when I feel motivated for it. I hope you have a fabulous week!

    1. You found the perfect spot for pictures indoors! And you still manage to make all your pictures poses look cool (I am just so stuck in a rut when we take pics).
    2. Every single of these outfits are so good: and you look great in each: it always amazes me how each style can look like you even when they are very different: maybe it is the confidence in clothes you exude (even if you may not always feel like it or you may fake it, it does shine through in your outfits!)
    3. I was trying to pick a favorite but they are all so good… I do love you in hats… so maybe the two with the beret and cap?
    4. Love these types of posts. The closet looks good! As long as you make progress, it is all good. At least you can see what you have and pull out things. And maybe as you play around with your clothes, you can just start a box of rejects… I wish I could give you some of our closet space: we have more than we need!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Mireille, thanks so much for this wonderfully thoughtful comment! You are very thorough, my friend! I really am a style chameleon when it comes to genres. It really just depends on my mood, but I do feel confident even if the particular genre is not as much me as some others may be. Like the office look, I almost never dress that way because it is just not my life these days. But I did love to get all fancied up in my corporate wear when I worked in NYC. I just love all fashion and all style genres and playing around with them and mixing them together. My mind’s eye is always piecing unlikely things together to make creative outfits. I even find myself changing people’s outfits around in my head if I am people watching! I guess like certain artists who see things in watercolor or musicians who can always hear the music…I am always seeing things in outfit pairings and descriptive words! As far as the indoor photo location, I am so pleased with it and don’t know why I never thought of it before! Jealousy abounds that you have too much closet space! Who ever heard of such a thing?! LOL

Thanks so much, Jill! You should have seen it before I organized the closet room! There was a pile of clothes about 4 feet tall just heaped in the middle of the room and you could barely open the door to get inside. It is much better now. Maybe one day I will own less things so I can fit it all that room!

I a bit jealous of your large closet space! Mine is tiny, and honestly I have no idea how we ended up buying this house with such small closets but nobody wants to move- including me LOL . I have to keep out of season clothes in another area of the house. And I love that you kept so many shoe boxes. I just recently started to, it’s helpful to have them!
These are fabulous looks on you, so creative and fun and each one with fabulous accessories!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Ellie, thanks so much! This was super fun to do! Our house is really old with almost no closets in it! We moved here 4 years ago from a newer house that had a huge walk in closet and tons of other closet space. The only way I could fit all of my clothing in the new house was to take over the smallest bedroom…which is really too small to even hold a bed, so my closet it became! But I still have to keep bulky sweaters and stuff stored in bins in the basement because I have way too much stuff! But it is my playroom and the things I love so I am not about to change who I am. Haha.

I usually have a good old sort through my closet at the end of seasons. You’re right not to part with anything if you’re not in that mindset. I love your paisley skirt and the various ways you have styled it – that’s the best thing about going through clothes, coming across things long forgotten about. Enjoy the rest of your week and thank you for hosting.
    Alison xx

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Alison, thanks so much! I definitely need to be in the right mindset to discard things and when I am, that’s when the major clean outs happen. But I have gotten rid of things in the past only to need/want them a few weeks later. It is so irritating! So I just keep it all!

Oh my goodness; and my boys think I have a lot of clothes and shoes! Wow! It’s really quite impressive. Now I think I just am not utilizing my space well enough and could really fit lots more…

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks, Joanne! I don’t know if it’s impressive or ridiculous! I have definitely overindulged my shopping habits over the years. And this is the crazy result! But there are worse things that I could overindulge in, I suppose! I have rearranged this space multiple times in the four years we have lived here. Still trying to find the most efficient way! The shoes take up so much darn space. I look forward to hearing if you find more efficient ways to use your space! It may give me some ideas.

PS…I need an extra room like that for all my stuff. And just think of all of the exercise you get!!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Jodie! I have never done something like this before as I usually just create an outfit and photograph it. I never think to purposely remix specific pieces…even though I am always remixing the same pieces. But it is fun to see the remixed outfits side by side! And we all need a closet room, my friend! Our next project is to get the attic cleaned up so I can store things up there instead of the basement. Mostly because the basement is damp and things can get smelly down there if not in sealed bins. But I will still get exercise going up to the attic for my clothes! Haha

OK, I am totally inspired by your closet organization! You are right that we will NEVER have enough room for all the clothes, shoes, assessories, etc., especially since we started blogging. Like you, I have a newfound appreciation for many of my “older” items! Speaking of older, that paisley skirt is absolutely gorgeous! You are so good at creatively styling your pieces. I have to admit I love your “working girl” look. You look so polished and professional, girl!!

    xx Darlene

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Darlene, thanks so much! This closet organization took me days to complete! It was so overwhelming. There was literally a pile of clothes that stood about 4 feet tall in the middle of the closet room. It was packed so tight that it filled half my bedroom when I unpacked the pile! And I just keep adding more things to my wardrobe without discarding things. It’s terrible, but I know I’m never going to change so now I just need to keep it better organized! But it was super fun to rediscover some old beloved items in there. Now I can play dress up more often and with ease!

You have an entire closet room?! That is amazing! My husband won’t even let me encroach on his half of the closet! One day I’d love to blow out the back of our closet into the attic storage room above the garage (they adjoin) and that will give me a little extra space! Good for you for organizing it all!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Laura! My husband let me have the extra room when we moved into this old house with no closets with the agreement that if anything comes spilling out of the closet room into other areas of the house, he would divorce me! Haha I have now taken over the basement with half of my clothes! But he conceded on the basement. And agreed to work on the attic so I can use that space instead of the basement. I love my husband. And my little house with a closet room! We all should have one and I hope you get one soon!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Haha Cheryl, thanks so much! And my house is really not that big either! My closet room is almost too small to even use as a bedroom so we turned into my closet instead. But the only closets in the entire house are in the master bedroom and one coat closet downstairs. These old houses never have adequate closet space so we had to improvise!

Wow! You have come up with so many looks and I love them all! My favorites would have to be the red moto jacket and then also the outfit with the red/white pinstripe shirt. I have never seen photos of your closet room before, but THAT IS AWESOME! Ohhh, I need a closet room now!

Thanks so much, Carrie! This was so much fun to do! I think I will need to do more of this kind of post. Especially with winter here now. My closet room was kind of necessary. We moved from a house with a huge walk in closet and tons of other closet space to this old house with almost no closets so something had to be done! The smallest bedroom is so small that you could only fit a twin bed or a crib in it anyway, so we made it my closet room instead! We all need closet rooms! They are just so much better.

Damn girl! You got me beat in the shoe department! I do keep alot of mine in boxes too and when we had the floor installers, I had to move my closet clothes out of there, that was a chore! You look so good in hats! I don’t think I do. I have a petite face, and I htink the only one that looks good is a beret. Love all these, especially the newsboy cap. I like how you are having fun dressing up and the wonderful combinations here. The grunge is fun! I used to teach alot of Nirvana on guitar.
I know what you mean about fast shoots, I am like a 10 min wonder with pics when its cold.

Haha, thanks, Jess! I do love shoes the most of any fashion related things! And I do love my hats, too. I never liked hats on me until I grew my hair longer. And I have a giant head so finding ones that fit properly is a bit challenging. Moving shoe boxes around to do things is a huge pain in the rear so I bet it was hectic for you getting the floors done, but so worth it, too, I imagine! We went out into a snowstorm this morning for photos and we were super fast! I hope you are well and enjoying the holiday season.

holy cow, I thought I had a lot of clothes. I actually took the time during this pandemic to downsize. I donated 11 bags of clothes and 150 pairs of shoes ( and I still have too much). But covid style had me in a rut and I needed to do something to shake it ( and all this cold and snow is not helping

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

I am totally over the top with clothes and shoes, Linda! I could definitely get rid of as much as you did and still have tons left! Actually, I cleaned out and listed on Poshmark about 8 huge leaf bags of clothes during this pandemic and I still have so much! I bet it felt really cleansing to get rid of that much stuff from your closet. I am trying to break out of the style rut and get dressed more frequently, too. Thanks for stopping by, my friend.

Lucy, thank you so much, my friend! You are so funny! I can’t believe it took me this long to find this photo spot in my house! I have taken pictures in the dining room, the living room, the kitchen, and the bedroom to avoid going outside and the lightning has always been awful. Finally, after living in this house for 4 years, I found the spot! Haha And we are going to have a dress up date one of these days when we are free to travel again.

Hi, Shelbee – I remember when you took time off to to sort through your clothes to give away, and now I hear you’re keeping them…only organized. Lol! Just like me, you have too many clothes and half of them are downstairs. I have the same thought as you when I’m running up and down the stairs to create an outfit of the day: oh, well, it’s always a good thing to get more exercise! My husband keeps trying to get me to get rid of all those clothes downstairs to get them out of his way. But it’s so great to have the elements needed for our creative ideas, isn’t it? I have found, though, that it’s easier and oh, so convenient to create a color palette and keep everything in those colors in my main closet. It all goes together and really is just about everything I need. It simplifies getting dressed and yet allows me to be creative. I’m beginning to see that I might be able to get rid of most of my black clothes (that are not flattering to my blonde hair and hazel eyes anyway.) You crack me up and I love you! – Angie, http://www.yourtrueselfblog.com

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Aw, Angie, thanks so much! You make me laugh, too! Haha. I am still selling unwanted clothing on Poshmark. I have so much already posted on there and that stuff is all stored in bins in the basement, so I merely added my entire sweater collection to basement bins as well…among other things. You are so right…it is a wonderful thing to be able to have all the elements for my creative ideas even if I have to go digging through basement bins (I do need to organize the sweaters by color or something though to make it easier). And it’s not like I have much to do these days anyway, so taking a little extra time getting dressed in the morning is really no big deal! I am glad I have all the storage space that I do have to keep all of my things. And I am definitely recognizing that I have way more things than most people. LOL Have a fabulous week, my friend. I love you, too!

Shelbee, I love that you shared Nylse’s story about her mother-in-law. It’s sooo hard when a family member passes away… Prayers for her family. I am missing my father-in-law who just passed this summer. <3

Love your outfits and I like the multiple fashions idea!!! I have a 1990's skirt that is perfect for fall and because when I bought it new I was a size 12 then (right after our son was born), it still fits! Just need a place to wear it (not school!). :)'

Happy to feature your fun post at this week's Share Your Style #286. <3
    Happy Christmas hugs,

Barb, thanks so much! Loss is so hard for us to process and losing someone this year can only be exponentially more difficult with all the other stuff going on. I am so sorry to hear of your father-in-law’s passing. Sending you prayers and virtual hugs. As for your 1990’s skirt, I bet it is amazing! As much as people bash 90’s style, it is definitely one of my favorite eras in fashion. Thanks so much for the feature as well. I will be over shortly to check it out and link up.
