My Birthday Butterfly Kimono & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up #282
My mother-in-law sent me this beautiful buttery yellow butterfly and floral print kimono for my birthday this year and I have been dying to share it with you all. I took these photos way back around the time of my birthday at the end of May but I haven’t had the opportunity to post them yet with all of our summer activities and my regularly scheduled style challenges.
Speaking of my regular style challenges, are you familiar with all of them? They generally account for 12 posts per month which doesn’t leave me much space and time for sharing randomness these days. Anyone is welcome to play along with any of these style challenges as well. They are definitely a fun way to think more creatively about your wardrobe.
Here is a short list of all of them in case you are interested in joining any of them.
- Songful Style: On the last Monday of every month, 5 bloggers choose a song for inspiration and you let it move you to creative styling.
- Style Imitating Art: Every two weeks, 3 bloggers choose a work of art to inspire your style.
- Stylish Monday: On the second Monday of every month, 15 bloggers style outfits based on a chosen theme.
- The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book: On the 15th of each month, Nancy and I invite you to share your good and bad buys based on a chosen theme.
- The Magnificent 8: On the last Wednesday of every third month (January, April, July, and October), 8 bloggers ranging in age from 20s to 80s share our ageless style based on a chosen theme.
- The Thrifty Six: On the third Monday of every month, 6 bloggers share our thrifted outfits based on a chosen theme.
- Your Own Twist: On the third Thursday of every month, Monica and I share our own twist on a chosen style theme.
If you are in need of some sartorial inspiration, won’t you take some time to check them out and maybe even challenge yourself to try a few. It never hurts to step outside of your comfort zone every once in a while!
Now let’s talk about stepping outside of your style comfort zone. As beautiful as the buttery yellow color of my new butterfly kimono is, almost any shade of yellow, particularly a very pale pastel yellow, is completely outside of my comfort zone. Never in a million years would I have entertained this kimono if I spotted it in a store. I may silently recognize that the color is very pretty and the print equally lovely but I would immediately dismiss it as a color that I cannot and should not wear. I would dismiss it so quickly that I wouldn’t even attempt to try it on.
But when it showed up in the mail as a birthday gift from my mother-in-law, dismissing it based on color discrimination was no longer an option. I had to at least try it on.
One thing I have learned though fashion blogging is that there are lots of tricks that one can rely on in order to wear colors that may not be so flattering. If you love a certain color that doesn’t necessarily work with your skin tone, you can incorporate it into your wardrobe in pieces that you don’t wear very near your face. But a kimono will naturally be worn very near my face, so I needed a different trick. To create a more flattering color palette for myself, I layered the kimono over a darker color that does flatter my skin tone and then I created a ton of visual interest with the print mixing between the two pieces. And suddenly, light buttery pastel yellow works on me!
I added a straw hat for sun protection which came in handy because Jeff and I enjoyed a delicious al fresco lunch after we finished taking these photos. I accessorized with braided sandals, a heart necklace by Michal Golan, a pair of thrifted earrings, and my green Teddy Blake Vanessa Palmelatto bag which is proving to be quite versatile with my summer wardrobe.
Isn’t it the prettiest little summer outfit?!
Thanks so much to my wonderful mother-in-law for always giving me the best gifts! I don’t think she has ever failed to give me a gift that I didn’t absolutely love! And you know, butterflies are kind of our thing so this new kimono has a very special place in my wardrobe now.
Do you have any special wardrobe items that you cherish for sentimental reasons? How about special jewelry with a story? That is the theme for this month’s Good Buy/Good-Bye Book if you want to share something!

What a great way to present that pretty kimono. There’s a blue and also soft burgundy in the fabric too I think, so there are a number of solid colors you could introduce. I’m sure you’ll figure out more creative ways to wear and enjoy.

Thanks so much, Pamela! I was thinking it would look cute over a navy tunic and flared denim, too, for a more bohemian vibe. Thanks for the styling suggestions!

Thanks so much, Kathrine! I actually had hung the kimono in my closet right next to this dress by pure accident and it immediately struck me that they would look crazy cute together. I love when those accidental pairings turn out brilliantly!

This si such a pretty duster on you and I really like that maxi dress too! I find kimonos are a good gift as they are one size fits all so I always love getting kimonos as gifts! 🙂
Hope you are having a nice week 🙂 Thanks for the link up!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Mica! I agree with you that kimonos are such a wonderful gift for fashion loving women! I always love getting a new scarf, too. My mother in law has picked some lovely topper pieces for me over the years from kimonos and ruanas to ponchos and scarves. They are so great because they make a statement and the one size fits all deal is really helpful when buying gifts!

Don’t you just love those kind a gifts. And it’s a very beautiful one that will work with dark green too I think. And I love the slits at the side, I knit that together backwards with a cardigan I have.

Thanks, Nancy! I had not thought to style it with dark green but I think I have to try that now!

I love butter yellow, but know it can be tricky. Love that you paired it with the navy pattern dress, it looks great and so summery! It really is fun to get out of the comfort zone in fashion too! bravo! Love the hat and bag too, great additions!
Have a wonderful week!

Aw, Jess, thanks so much! I really loved the way this outfit came together. I had ruled out yellow as an option in my wardrobe. But then once I got this beautiful kimono and figured out that there are ways I can wear this color, I also added a really buttery yellow tie dye dress to my summer wardrobe. Creative styling is where it’s at! We can make anything work with the right combinations. I hope you are having a beautiful week, my friend!

Your birthday kimono is so pretty!! What a great choice! I love how you styled it. And I totally know what you mean abut the color lol! I find that light yellow doesn’t usually look good on me but I’ve tried on a few that did, to my surprise! I love all of your style challenges – it’s always so fun to see what you and others come up with!!

Thanks so much, Lizzie! Yellow is a really difficult color for a lot of people to wear, I think. So it’s nice to come up with ways to style it for those who love the color but don’t look great in it. And what is there not to love about cheerful happy shades of yellow?! I am glad that you enjoy our fun little style challenges. They definitely keep me inspired to get creative in the old closet room!

Shelbee, you are stunning in this kimono/dress combination…absolutely stunning. I think it’s the juxtaposition of your dark hair and dress with your pale skin and kimono…perfection, my friend, perfection! I would say you have received a jewel of a mother-in-law (kinda like my son-in-law and daughter-in-law…hahaha)! She definitely gets you; that’s for sure! I wish I lived closer so you could take me on photo shoots!! Your backgrounds are amazing!!

Michelle
Beautiful outfit, Shelbee! I just love the hippie vibe, and all of the florals. If the kimono color is a problem with your skin tone, you have definitely solved it. Yellow is a problem for me as well. Golden yellows are okay, but my favorite lemon yellows are not. So the two yellow pieces I have are bottoms.
And thanks for the list of all of the challenges. I may play along with a few more as they definitely take me outside of my comfort zone – which is where all the learning is.

Oh Michelle, thanks so much for this lovely comment! Blogging has definitely forced me out of my comfort zone as well and I have discovered so many little styling tricks over the years…mostly through trial and error. You don’t know if you don’t try it! That’s a mantra from my momma! She always pushed me outside of my comfort zone. I love that you have been pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone, too! While I have been cleaning out my closet, I was thinking about how your style as evolved since you started sharing more fashion posts and it made me smile…and I am finding so many freaking cute things in my closet that I think you would have tons of fun with! I have been setting it all aside because Becca may visit me in the fall and I am just going to send heaps and piles of clothes back with her so the two of you can hopefully meet up and share the goods! But if she doesn’t make it here, I will drive it all down to you both in February!

Shelbee, I love the choice your mother-in-law made for your lovely kimona! Kimnas have certinly been a hit for the past few years, I love how they add a layer of fashion to a dress or over pants! Thank you for sharing on #omhgww last week.
I know you are always busy but I do hope you have a lovely week!!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Karren! I have loved kimonos since I was a teenager and my mother gave me her authentic kimono sent to her from Vietnam in the 1960s. I have long since lost that kimono but my obsession with this style of garment has never died!
