Kaftan Style with EvaTrends & Link Up On the Edge #144

This is a sponsored post. This kaftan was provided to me for purposes of this review. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

Have you ever tried a style that was a bit out of your comfort zone? Or maybe something looked really cool on the racks or on someone else and you decided to give it a try. I have found that since I began blogging, I have become much more willing to try new things with my wardrobe. I figure if I am being gifted an item at no monetary cost to me, why not experiment with pieces that I wouldn’t spend my own money on. By experimenting this way, I have discovered so many different styles of clothing that I actually would purchase with my own funds.

I have always loved the ease and comfort of an oversized kaftan. This style of dress just gives me all the relaxed eclectic vibes of an old hippie. And I am absolutely an old hippie at heart. But it seems the bulk and extra fabric of this flowy style of dress can overwhelm a petite figure while making a larger figure, like mine, look even bulkier. So how do you style a kaftan without looking like you are wearing your Grandma’s nightie?

A kaftan is not supposed to be form fitting or really even figure flattering. But you can give it some form by adding layers and accessories. When I ordered this Polka Dot Parade Kaftan Dress from EvaTrends, I was planning on an easy Spring style with sandals and some simple accessories. If you look at the EvaTrends model wearing the kaftan, it hits her ankles (she is obviously much shorter than me) and she appears to be just wearing the kaftan with no extra layers.

However, when the dress arrived and I tried it on, I was a little surprised to discover that it is completely sheer. I was not expecting this so I had to get creative with my layers so as not to show off my undergarments. I have a long sleeve midi length body con dress in black, which is no longer body con since my recent weight loss. Since I can’t really wear the body con dress by itself anymore because it really just looks like it doesn’t fit, I can at least use it as a layering piece under an oversized kaftan. And since it is still a bit chilly here in Northern New York, the long sleeves were perfect to style this lightweight linen/cotton dress.

I added a denim jacket to give the dress a little bit of shape although the denim jacket is a bit oversized itself. My super old combat boots just added a bit of grunge style to the look. All in all, I kind of like the end result. Maybe it is a bit cutesy for a 44 year old woman, but I was wicked comfortable all day long. While a kaftan dress may look a bit like Grandma’s nightie, the benefit is that it also feels a lot like Grandma’s nightie. And sometimes having the comfort of sleepwear in your outfit is a really nice thing.

What do you think? Can I pull off this kaftan style dress or is it just kind of silly looking?
