Kaftan Style with EvaTrends & Link Up On the Edge #144
Have you ever tried a style that was a bit out of your comfort zone? Or maybe something looked really cool on the racks or on someone else and you decided to give it a try. I have found that since I began blogging, I have become much more willing to try new things with my wardrobe. I figure if I am being gifted an item at no monetary cost to me, why not experiment with pieces that I wouldn’t spend my own money on. By experimenting this way, I have discovered so many different styles of clothing that I actually would purchase with my own funds.
I have always loved the ease and comfort of an oversized kaftan. This style of dress just gives me all the relaxed eclectic vibes of an old hippie. And I am absolutely an old hippie at heart. But it seems the bulk and extra fabric of this flowy style of dress can overwhelm a petite figure while making a larger figure, like mine, look even bulkier. So how do you style a kaftan without looking like you are wearing your Grandma’s nightie?
A kaftan is not supposed to be form fitting or really even figure flattering. But you can give it some form by adding layers and accessories. When I ordered this Polka Dot Parade Kaftan Dress from EvaTrends, I was planning on an easy Spring style with sandals and some simple accessories. If you look at the EvaTrends model wearing the kaftan, it hits her ankles (she is obviously much shorter than me) and she appears to be just wearing the kaftan with no extra layers.
However, when the dress arrived and I tried it on, I was a little surprised to discover that it is completely sheer. I was not expecting this so I had to get creative with my layers so as not to show off my undergarments. I have a long sleeve midi length body con dress in black, which is no longer body con since my recent weight loss. Since I can’t really wear the body con dress by itself anymore because it really just looks like it doesn’t fit, I can at least use it as a layering piece under an oversized kaftan. And since it is still a bit chilly here in Northern New York, the long sleeves were perfect to style this lightweight linen/cotton dress.
I added a denim jacket to give the dress a little bit of shape although the denim jacket is a bit oversized itself. My super old combat boots just added a bit of grunge style to the look. All in all, I kind of like the end result. Maybe it is a bit cutesy for a 44 year old woman, but I was wicked comfortable all day long. While a kaftan dress may look a bit like Grandma’s nightie, the benefit is that it also feels a lot like Grandma’s nightie. And sometimes having the comfort of sleepwear in your outfit is a really nice thing.
What do you think? Can I pull off this kaftan style dress or is it just kind of silly looking?
If you are a fan of loose fitting oversized and unique clothing, EvaTrends has a really great selection. Be sure to use code SH15 at checkout to receive an extra 15% off your entire purchase.
And now I want to leave you with a few behind the scenes photos from shoots where my kids in are tow. Ralphie always wants to be part of the action!
And now your featured favorites from last week.
Liberty of B4 and Afters shared her post, My Before and After, featuring her experience with Arbonne Skincare for acne. What fabulous results she has experienced! Definitely check it out!
Ashley of Le Stylo Rouge shared her post, A Blue Striped Linen Suit for Spring and Summer. This is such a great look and I am dying over that lacy bralette. So sassy!
And my friend Mel of Mom with Style is back after a long blogging break and better than ever with her post, The Copper Skirt You Can Maximize This Season. The color and silhouette of this skirt is absolutely stunning on Mel.
Keeping it on the edge,

Well, you know I’m Ms Tunic Girl — they are my go-to (and super easy to sew). One thing I’ve discovered is that getting the length flattering for one’s proportions is key. For me, over the knee is best, though that means I then need to add leggings. Maybe this would be more versatile if you turned it into a top (fingertip length)? Or just keep it as a beach coverup! (For all those Caribbean vacations that you take! Hahahaha).

Thanks, Anne! I totally thought of you when I was styling this, too. Except you would have chosen something in a much brighter color! Yes, I take so many Caribbean vacations! Ha. In my dreams…so I guess I could just sleep in my kaftan!

I think you already pulled off this kaftan dress! It doesn’t look baggy or ill fitting at all. It looks like a comfortable dress with edge! Got to love combat boots. I am actually also surprised to hear that this kaftan is sheer. I am not a fan of sheer clothing because then it adds extra sets of challenges and perhaps extra costs you know purchasing undergarments that won’t show through or getting a lining put in place but I also am not against keeping it so long as I know I will keep wearing it. I hope you are having a great morning so far and happy advance Mother’s Day!

Maureen, thanks so much! I actually like sheer tops with a lacy bralette underneath but with a sheer dress you definitely need something to line the bottom half! You can’t just wear a bralette and panties. Or can you? I did go out in public basically in my underwear for the superhero outfit I did with The Fab 40’s! Hahaha I hope you have the most wonderful Mother’s Day as well, my friend!

Lorena, thank you so much. That is the most wonderful compliment! I do love a good style challenge so I find it fun to try to figure out how to make a certain piece work for me. I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Shelbee, I think that caftan looks really flattering on you, and I love how you creatively layered it for the weather. Also I’m very into the entire look of this shoot—it feels very Scottish Highlands (even though I know it’s upstate NY)!

Liberty
Oh WOW! Thank you for the feature!! That puts a smile on my face for the rest of the day!
And before I got that far in your post, I was going to say, “comfortable”. That kaftan looks comfortable. And it’s funny but you’re right about the whole sleepwear/ grandma’s nightie/ comfort connection. Sad but true. And I’ve always been a comfort dresser– I can hardly stand a belt because they’re not comfortable!
So I guess the reason you’re smiling so much in your photos could be that your kids are in the back of the camera helping you? I was amazed with my first baby– how much I smiled that first year.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Liberty! I don’t know if it is the kids that are making me smile, they usually make me grimace and drive me crazy! Lol. But it is fun when they want to jump in on the photos…unless I am in a hurry! Comfort is key…unless there are shoes that are just too cute to resist. I will buy them anyway! Have a great weekend, my friend.

Shelbee, your little Ralphie is adorable!! While you’ve styled this dress perfectly with the boots and jacket, I like you better in fitted shapes. But, hey, that’s just my opinion!! As long as you feel great in it, go for it!
Happy weekend. I see your grass is coming up so warm weather should be on the horizon, right?
xx Darlene

Darlene, thanks so much! I definitely like more fitted clothing as well, but you know on those PMS days, a little baggy goes a long way! It is finally getting warmer, but it won’t stop raining!

Perfect timing! I was just talking about kaftans, kimonos… Lounge wear clothing is so perfect for spring/summer.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks, Becky! So you know I have a kimono addiction…and I just ordered 3 new ones from Country Outfitter that I cannot wait to share on the blog! And some new cowboy boots that I will definitely be bringing to Asheville in July! I am getting in touch with my southern girl style as well as my old hippie vibe…I guess they sort of go hand in hand!

Laura, thanks for stopping by! It is one of the best things about blogging, isn’t it? I just accepted a brand ambassadorship with Country Outfitter…and I am not even that much of a country type girl, but I want to explore that side of myself a little bit more. I was given the opportunity, so I grabbed it! Have a great weekend, my friend.

I think this dress is pretty cool! The different patterns and prints makes it unique. I find myself more eager to try different styles since I started blogging. I was more of the girl who know what she likes and dislikes before even giving things a thought. But now I find myself wanting to try different styles. If I would of never start this I would of never even give statement earrings I try. Now I can’t live without them 😉 thanks for the feature girlfriend

Mel, thanks so much! It was my pleasure to feature you. And I am the same way, I definitely have become way more creative with my clothing since I began blogging. Although I was always creative, I have learned so many more tricks and tips on styling, for sure, and have tried many new things. I also have embraced my quirkiness much more than I ever did when I was younger. This has been a super fun process!
