I know today is St. Patrick’s Day when all of the internet is exploding with all things Irish and all things green. But I didn’t want to do what all of the internet is doing today. Instead we are celebrating Jewel Day by putting our own twists on jewel tones. Yes, I ended up in green anyway but that’s only because green is my forever favorite color and emeralds are my favorite gemstone (and my birthstone) so emerald green was the obvious choice for me.

Jewel Day is always celebrated on March 13 and it is simply a day to celebrate gemstones and jewelry…by either giving or receiving these gifts! It doesn’t have to be expensive jewelry either. Any small piece of wearable art that you can give or receive as a token of appreciation is sufficient to celebrate this fun holiday! In fact, I had planned to wear a gifted necklace from Michelle but it ended up not working with this outfit as I had imagined. But that’s okay, I am planning another outfit that will showcase my new necklace perfectly!

Did you know that the largest jewel in the world is one of the British Crown Jewels, weighing 533 carats? The world’s largest diamond, the Hope Diamond, is 45.52 carats and is on display at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. That would be a fun way to celebrate Jewel Day as well…with a visit to the Smithsonian to see the Hope Diamond!

As I stated above, emerald green is my favorite color so obviously it is also my very favorite jewel tone. I recently pulled this green velvet maxi skirt out of a basement storage bin to style for some prompt, but I cannot remember what. I ended up not wearing it and never put it back into the basement bin. So when it was time for styling jewel tones, this old favorite skirt was right there urging me wear it.

This skirt is really, really old. I bought it at this adorable little boutique called Eastern Gifts in Montclair, New Jersey, when I lived there between 2001 and 2003. I bought most of wardrobe in that store during those years. I loved everything they had! I still have a few skirts and some necklaces from that store but I rarely wear them. I just learned that they were forced to close their business after 37 years in the summer of 2020 because expenses got too high. What a shame. I was about to do some online shopping, too.

But let’s get back to my 20 year old green velvet skirt. I guess there is a reason I have held onto for all these years. I mean it is a green velvet maxi skirt that is luxurious and soft and ever so comfortable. My only issue with it is the slimmer cut through the hips. When I tucked in my green turtleneck, I had all sorts of bumpy lumps around my hips and waist. So I added the wide corset belt to help smooth some things over. The belt mostly worked but I still had some weird lumpy bumps that needed camouflaging if I was to feel confident in this outfit. This is where my plum colored crochet duster came in mighty handy. It is sheer enough and flows away from body enough to not lose the silhouette underneath while also masking the lumps and bumps at my hips. I wasn’t certain if plum classifies as a jewel tone but after trying on a few different topper pieces, this is the one that looked best.

I accessorized with gold and teal jewelry, my green velvet ankle boots, green velvet gloves, and a black wool wide brim hat. This necklace always reminds me of a peacock and peacocks are like the best representation of jewel tones in all of nature. And the floppy hat seemed to work with this kind of witchy bohemian look I created. Overall, I really love the deep jewel tones and rich textures in this outfit, but I am so ready to start wearing spring and summer colors and textures.

By the way, did you see that the United States will be remaining on Daylight Savings time starting in 2023? There will be no more switching of the clocks to mess with my hormones. I am so excited!

Be sure to stop by Monica’s post for more details about her adorable jewel toned outfit. I am dying over her turquoise cowgirl boots and fabulous kimono. This outfit is giving me all the festival vibes and I am so ready for festival season!

About Your Own Twist

Your Own Twist is a monthly link party hosted by Monica of Jersey Girl, Texan Heart and me on the third Thursday of every month with the goal of inspiring some of our friends to get creative with personal style.

The idea behind this collaboration is to take one common piece or theme and style it our own way with our own twist…Monica and I have both taken a lot of fashion inspiration from one another over the past few years even though we have totally different styles. It is always fun to see how we can interpret similar items in unique ways or what kind of twist we will each bring to the chosen theme.

We will let you know the themes well in advance in the event that you would like to use the theme for your own post and add it to the link party. However, any fashion posts are welcome regardless of whether you used the theme or not. Check out the graphic below which has some of our upcoming style prompts.
