Interior with a Book by Richard Diebenkorn | Styling Imitating Art
Next up for Style Imitating Art…
About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of Meadow Tree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag Salazar, Terri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!
This Week’s Presenter
Terri chose this round’s artwork. It is another piece, like her previous pick, that she has enjoyed viewing for many years in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
The Artwork
Interior with a Book by Richard Diebenkorn
This 1959 oil on canvas by American painter Richard Diebenkorn features the corner interior view of a room with two large picture windows looking out onto a terrestrial landscape painted in greens, yellows, and oranges with a vibrant blue sky. The interior view shows a table holding an open book, a plate, and a cup with a black chair in the left corner of the room. Browns, oranges, blues, grays, pastels, and black make up the color palette of the interior.
As soon as I saw this week’s artwork, my outfit came together effortlessly in my mind. I was a bit unsure of how it would look in reality though. In my anxiousness to find out, I already tried it on and photographed it and it was even better in reality! I am looking forward to sharing it with you next Monday.
If you want to join us with an outfit inspired by this artwork and be featured in Terri’s review post on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, be sure to submit your photos to her at meadowtreestyle@gmail.com by 10:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, August 15, 2023.
Happy Styling!

I like the painting! It reminds me a bit of a painting by Hockney.

I think it’s a really cool painting, too! I had to go look up David Hockney though. I really like his work! It is very similar. I checked Salazar’s blog and she featured a Hockney painting for SIA way back in 2012!

Wow!! You’re already done? I’m going to have to give this one lots of thought. I’m not sure what direction to go which means I’ll wait until the last minute.

Thanks so much! This work is definitely very similar in style to Hockney’s works. I am glad you enjoyed it!
