Inspired by Sports Cars & Your Own Twist Link Up #54
International Sports Car Racing Day is this Saturday, March 18, so we thought it might be fun to find our sartorial inspiration at the racetrack, or, in my case, the car dealership on a Sunday when they are closed. This racy little holiday always falls on the third Saturday of March to coincide with the 12 Hours of Sebring sports car endurance race held at the Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida.
Ironically, in the wake of my divorce when I was 26 years old, I purchased a white convertible Chrysler Sebring with a white rag top. Oh, it was a such a girly car, perfectly suited for a 26 year old divorced woman in New York City. It was totaled when a group of teenagers attempted to hot wire it. They failed badly but also completely destroyed the car beyond repair in the process. They were never caught or reprimanded.
Back to race cars. I have never been into them or the sport of racing. In fact, I have never really been into cars at all. I don’t know very much about cars except how to drive them. Sadly, I have never even learned how to change a tire. That is something that I probably should make a priority. But I would rather create cute outfits than get all filthy playing with dirty tires!
All that I require in a vehicle is safety, comfort, user friendliness, and security in knowing that all things are working properly. Because I do have such terrible driving anxiety, we make it a priority to lease a new car every three years. That way I know we always have the newest technology and everything is in new working condition. It just makes me feel less anxious that way. But I am not picky about make, model, or color. However, we have had Toyotas for quite a few years now and have remained loyal to our friendly neighborhood dealership for the last decade. They have been good to us so we keep going back. That is how it is supposed to work, I think!
Since I am not a racing or race car fan, I obviously don’t have any racing themed things in my wardrobe, except for a few things with racing stripes like these distressed skinny jeans. My checkerboard Vans always remind me of a racetrack so I started with the jeans and sneakers and built an outfit from there.
For some reason, the colors I associate with race cars and racing are orange, red, black, and white, so I worked up this combination of an orange shirt over a black turtleneck with a red hat and white moto jacket. A moto jacket seemed the obvious and only choice of outerwear for a sports car themed outfit.
And that is what I came up with! It’s not really how I dress myself these days, but I really liked the outcome. The orange and red combination made me feel happy and my checkerboard Vans always add a little extra bounce to my step!
About Your Own Twist
Your Own Twist is a monthly link party hosted by Monica of Monica Hayworth (formerly Jersey Girl, Texan Heart) and me on the third Thursday of every month with the goal of inspiring some of our friends to get creative with personal style.
The idea behind this collaboration is to take one common piece or theme and style it our own way with our own twist…Monica and I have both taken a lot of fashion inspiration from one another over the past few years even though we have totally different styles. It is always fun to see how we can interpret similar items in unique ways or what kind of twist we will each bring to the chosen theme.
We will let you know the themes well in advance in the event that you would like to use the theme for your own post and add it to the link party. However, any fashion posts are welcome regardless of whether you used the theme or not.
Check out the graphic below which has the first six style prompts for 2023. I think we are going to have lots of fashion fun this year and we invite you all to play along!
Unfortunately, Monica is unable to join me this month. But please do link up your fashion posts below especially if you have a sports car inspired outfit to share!
I invite you to also join us next month for All Zipped Up in honor of National Zipper Day.

Awww…, poor Sebring! What a bunch of savages! I was never a car person, except for admiring how a particular car looked, until I met my husband. Now car and motorcycle info just seem to osmose into my brain as I listen to him discuss his favorite hobbies. I’ve always loved to listen to people’s passions whatever they may be. Anyway, you outfit is perfect for the topic. I love the Vans. And that shade of orange reminds of Repsol-Honda racing colors. Fun outfit – and topic!

Thank you, Michelle! I did know that you were into cars and racing because of your husband and I love that you joined us for this one! I also have always been drawn to people’s passions even if the topic itself does not much interest me. I enjoy watching a person light up when they discuss a topic that is important to them!
Oh, the kids who tried to steal my car were only 12 and 13 years old! I found out because it happened parked in front of my boyfriend’s house. He had a 12 year old daughter who heard a group of kids bragging about it at school the next day! They lived in New Jersey and because I lived across the state border in Pennsylvania, I ended up having to deal with some bullshit insurance fraud case when my car was totaled out. My insurance company told me that any incident that occurs outside of your home state automatically opens a fraud case. Which I found so strange since I lived in Pennsylvania and worked in New York so I drove through New Jersey every day on my way to and from work. The insurance company knew that I drove through 3 states every single day so WTF? Anyway, I ended up dropping them, got a new car, and all is well a million years later! Haha.

What a shame about your car back then. I do love cars, big cars, fast cars. Your outfit suits the theme very well. The sneakers reminds me of the last round flag at formule 1 racing.

Aw, thanks, Nancy! I had no idea that you were into cars that much! How fun! I was really sad when my convertible was no more. But I am very pleased with my current Toyota Highlander!

Oh I am much like you; I couldn’t care less what I drive as long as it’ll safely get me from point A to point B! In fact, I rarely even notice when I drive right by family members as I rarely recognize their cars. I can tell you what color car most of the people I know and I might even know the liscence plate but I would have no clue about make and model. You came up with a really cute sports car themed outfit and look like you are ready for a day at the races.

Joanne, thanks so much, my friend! Oh my goodness, I don’t have any idea what kinds of cars other people drive either. I can barely keep track of my own vehicle in a parking lot! Haha.

I was never a car person until I met my husband! But, since that was back when the dinosaurs roamed the earth, I guess I’ve been a car person for quite some time! I had a 1999 black Saab 9-3 and loved that car! Mike hated it because it was a new version with lots of computer things that went bad often! I had another Saab 9-3 several years later but didn’t love it as much. Today, I drive a Honda Civic! What a come down! If Saabs were still being made, I’d definitely be driving one of them!
I love this outfit on you and couldn’t believe how great it looked against those first cars! I’m sorry your poor Sebring was totaled…especially as you’d enjoyed it so much!
Thanks for the link party!

Oh, fun story about your relationship with cars, my friend! I do remember every car that I have ever owned. First, there was my silver Nissan Sentra that I bought upon college graduation. My grandmother had to co-sign the loan for me! I had that car from 1996 until 2001. The Sebring was next which was totaled in 2006. Then I got a blue Hyundai Santa Fe which I had until 2014. In 2012, we got a silver Toyota Rav 4 which Jeff still drives as his work vehicle. Then there was the white Corolla from 2019-2022 which was just swapped out for my dark blue Highlander. I could tell some really funny stories about the vehicles we had when I was growing up! My father believed that a car wasn’t truly broken in and functional until it had 100,000 miles on it so we always had some really interesting used vehicles!
