Inspired by Seeking Sunshine: The Best Turtleneck Sweater
As soon as Fall hits my neck of the woods, Winter is right around the corner. Autumn is short lived around here, the leaves turn fast, and fall even faster. The first frost should be happening any day now with overnight temperatures dipping into the low 30’s this week. We will be seeing the first snowflakes long before Halloween arrives.
Even though we celebrate college football Saturdays with enthusiasm and vigor around here, we do live in a place where ice hockey is the sport of choice. When there is snow and ice on the ground for 10 months out of the year, it is only natural that sports that involve snow and ice will be prevalent. So for today’s outfit, I took my inspiration from a former North Country girl who is no stranger to the bitter cold and lake effect snow and happens to be married to an ice hockey player as well.
Do y’all know Annessa of Seeking Sunshine? Annessa hails from southern New Jersey, but attended the University of Rochester where she met and married her hockey player husband. For those of you who may not know New York geography, Rochester is about 150 miles from my town of Watertown if you just drive in a southwest direction right along the perimeter of Lake Ontario. Both cities are located in the snow belt and get slammed every year with mountains of snow so I know Annessa feels my struggle with staying warm and stylish through the long, bitter North Country Winters. She escaped the crazy Winters, however, by moving to Spokane, Washington, where her husband is originally from.
Annessa began her blog, Seeking Sunshine, in 2013 as a way to document her overseas travels with her husband for his ice hockey career. They very recently moved to Limburg, Germany, after welcoming their adorable little boy, Danek, into the world just 6 months ago. And boy, is he a cutie pie! Annessa’s blog incorporates some of her favorite passions including travel, everyday style, and fitness with the recent addition of lots of fun and helpful parenting tips and ideas for wee ones. You can read more about Annessa here.
I have been following Annessa for quite a long time now and I absolutely adore her cool and edgy style. She showcases minimalist fashion which is necessary as a wife and mom on the go traveling frequently between the U.S. and Germany. But even with limited wardrobe pieces at her disposal, she always manages to look fantastic and perfectly on trend. And she never even appears frazzled as a brand new mom although she often says she is! I feel ya, girl!
A few weeks ago, she shared an outfit that really caught my eye featuring The Best Turtleneck Sweater. It was easy to coordinate and mimic this outfit with pieces I already have in my closet. You can never go wrong with a classic black and gray combination. I also love how the jeans and sweater allow for the totally cool snakeskin booties to be the stand out element.
My gray turtleneck sweater may not be the “best turtleneck sweater” like Annessa’s…I mean, hers is Free People. I love Free People. But I don’t have the budget for their pieces unless I pick them up secondhand, which I have and feel like such a winner when I find them! But my $4 Kohl’s clearance gray turtleneck sweater is actually incredibly soft and cozy, so I’m not complaining. I also bought it in olive green…because $4! That’s practically free as far as I’m concerned.
Of course, I wore my favorite Torrid black distressed skinny jeans that were the perfect silhouette to balance my oversized sweater. I added my snakeskin booties and a black moto jacket. Annessa did not wear a moto jacket with her outfit but she rocks a black leather moto jacket better than anyone I have ever seen! It is sort of like her signature style, in my opinion. As it was a bit too cold for me to be out and about without a jacket, the obvious choice was this jacket. And I don’t have a Louis Vuitton bag, but if I did, you better believe I would wear it with every outfit! So that’s my copycat interpretation of Annessa’s outfit.
It’s fun to find inspiration from my blogger friends. They make me think of things that I may not have otherwise thought to pair together. In fact, I bought these $4 oversized sweaters with the sole intent of wearing them only as loungewear around the house. I think this is the first time I styled either them with actual “leave the house” clothing.

Thanks, Nancy! And how funny is that about Limburg? We have a town called Mexico not far from me in New York. It confused me so much when I first moved here!
