Inspired by Rosy Outlook: Plaid & Shorts (My Current Uniform)
I am getting super excited for the coming of Fall. It is creeping up on us, teasing me with the crisp evening air only to laugh at my anticipation with the warm afternoon sun. Getting dressed at this time of year can be somewhat challenging especially where I live. Temperatures have been dipping down into the mid-40’s at night and I find myself scrambling for layers to keep warm. Mornings are crisp and cool with temperatures hovering in the high 50’s when I walk the children to school so light layers are a necessity. However, by afternoon with the sun high in the sky, I am quickly shedding the extra clothing with temperatures peaking in the mid-70’s.
I am sure for some of you in warmer climates, mid-70’s probably sounds like a cool and comfortable Fall day. But with a temperature change of 30 degrees in the course of 12 hours, it just feels hot to me. Temperature really is quite a relative thing, isn’t it?
My husband once described to me the climate and temperature changes he experienced in Afghanistan. He said when the temperature dropped at night to 80 degrees, he found himself shivering with bone chilling cold. If I am sitting in 80 degrees, I damn near want to die from heat stroke. But with temperatures peaking between 120 and 130 degrees during the day, I suppose 80 would chill your bones.
It is all about the way our bodies acclimate, I suppose. And it is quite an amazing thing about the human body. Our ability to adjust to severe and dramatic changes in temperature. Clearly, my husband adjusted to 130 degrees after spending months and months in that climate. And then he returned to the North Country where it is not uncommon in the Winter months for temperatures to hit -40 degrees. Yet, his body is capable of adjusting to temperatures with a 170 degree shift. Perhaps I am just a giant nerd, but I find that fascinating. And really kind of insane.
In any event, this transitional time of year is the time when you can create seemingly crazy outfit combinations. You can pair together pieces that may be contradictory. Like jeans and a sweater with sandals. Or shorts with a long sleeve flannel shirt and booties. Add a leather jacket with bare legs or wear wool blend trousers with a sleeveless camisole. One part warm weather, one part cold weather. It makes for some extra interest that you cannot style just any time of year. While making getting dressed somewhat difficult, these transitional seasons are kind of unique and fun as well.
When I saw Kelly of Rosy Outlook style her current uniform of plaid and shorts with booties, I got a little excited. Maybe more excited than a person should get over something as trivial as an outfit. But I guess it’s not all that trivial to me. Or Kelly. Or probably a lot of you reading this post. Clothing and great style bring me joy. And no matter how trivial that may seem to others, I am owning it with pride.
If you don’t already know Kelly and aren’t familiar with her blog, definitely go check her out. I have been following her for as long as I have been blogging and I absolutely adore her style which mixes classic pieces with boho vibes. For those of you who may need a little extra outfit inspiration, Kelly creates combinations that are easy to replicate with pieces you probably already have hanging in your closet. Her blog focuses on fashion and style with a bright perspective on life. Also every Wednesday she co-hosts the Fashion Frenzy Link Up with Annessa of Seeking Sunshine, who has equally great style that inspires me frequently.
While my pieces are totally different from Kelly’s, it is the same exact outfit formula (minus the gorgeous Louis Vuitton bag and with the addition of a leather moto jacket and baseball cap)…plaid top, denim shorts, and booties. I do own pieces that are nearly identical to Kelly’s and could have created an near exact replica of her outfit, but I wanted to show you how you can take inspiration from someone else and add your own little twists. Plus what fun is it walking around looking exactly the same as the next gal? What a boring place this would be if we all did that.
What have you been wearing during the transitional season? And how rosy is your outlook?
Keeping it on the edge,

Thanks, Patrick! Oh I wish I could get to at least one festival in the Fall! But I don’t know if it’s in the cards (or the budget).

Cute! It’s so weird— fine line between copying and inspiring!! I’ll admit I’ve def done both lol!
Love both takes! I’m feeling wack with the season transition so far… I gotta get on it!!

Thanks so much, Becky! I think even when we copy exactly, we still have our own twist on it because we have different hair and different body types and most importantly different personalities! It keeps it all fun and interesting…inspiring one another. I am hankering to make my way south sometime in the Fall but I don’t know if it is in my budget. I will be traveling to Virginia soon, but I don’t think I can’t make it as far as Asheville. Although Asheville is definitely calling me!

There is no weather transition here. OK, we had one day. That was exciting! I wore shoes with socks! OMG! Radical!
Interesting thoughts about the temperature adjustment thing. Nerd on, my friend.
And this: “…I got a little excited. Maybe more excited than a person should get over something as trivial as an outfit.” Hahahahahaha.
And curious about your location for this post. Like all that stonework!
Thanks for linking! xxox

Oh my word, Anne, you crack me up! Shoes with socks?! But were they sandals with socks? That would be radical! The stone work background is the pavilion at Thompson Park in Watertown. Lots and lots of stone work in that place. My go to place when I am being too lazy to find somewhere else. I am a trivial thing, ain’t I?!

I’ve done sandals with socks many a time, but this was actual closed toe shoes. I think I deployed a scarf as more than an outfit prop as well.
You? TRIVIAL? Nah!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
I do love socks with sandals! One of my favorite styling tricks to wear all my cute sandals in the North Country cold. Trivial I am, sometimes! Deeply philosophical and worldly other times, I think. I might be kidding myself though.
